Cultural beliefs differ as to whether directness or indirectness is considered positive. In the mainstream
American culture, the ideal (28) ____ of communication includes being direct rather than indirect (“ideal" here
means that the culture values this style, although not everyone speaks directly). There are several expressions in
English (29) ____ emphasize the importance of being direct: “Get to the point! Don't beat around the bush! Let's
get down to business!" These sayings all indicate the importance of dealing directly with issues rather than (30)
____ them. One way to determine whether a culture favors a direct or indirect style in communication is to find out
how the people in that culture express disagreement or how they say, “No”. In Japan, there are at least fifteen ways
of saying “No”, without actually saying the word. Similarly, in Japan, it would be (31) ____ rude to say directly “I
disagree with you” or “You're wrong”.
Many Americans believe that "honesty is the best policy" and their communication style reflects this.
Honesty and directness in communication are strongly related. It is not a (32) ____, then, to find out that cultural
groups misjudge each other based on different beliefs about directness and honesty in communication.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions.
There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born
with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he
has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the
second factor is what happens to the individual - the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an individual is
handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of
intelligence of which he is capable.
The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case
history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their
growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in
separate foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor
educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was
read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This
environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure
their intelligence. Mark's I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average, and fully forty points higher
than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at
roughly the same level.
Question 34: Which of the following is true, according to the passage?
A. Environment is crucial in determining a person's intelligence.
B. The brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligence.
C. Human brains do not differ considerably right from birth.

A. individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same level
B. an individual's intelligence is determined only by his environment
C. lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence
D. changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain

With 13,000 floral species and over 15,000 faunal species, three newly discovered big animal species, and a
ratio of country/world species of 6.3%. Vietnam has enormous tourism-particularly ecotourism-potential. In fact,
since 1986, when Renovation Reforms began the shift from a centrally planned to a socialist-oriented market, or
multi-sectoral, economy, tourism has been a sector of primary concern to the government. In May 1995, the prime
minister of Vietnam approved a master plan of tourism development for the period 1995-2010. In February 1999,
the state decree on tourism was part of the socio-economic development strategy for the period 2001-2010
approved at the IX National Congress of the Party: "Tourism development has become a spearhead economic
industry indeed. It is necessary to improve the quality and effectiveness of tourism activities, bringing into full play
the natural conditions, and cultural and historical tradition to meet the domestic and international demand for
tourism and to catch up with tourism development in the region” (Document of the IX National Congress 2001).
Tourism has so far brought great benefits to the economy, but it has also contributed to environmental
degradation, especially biodiversity deterioration. Thus, the concept of "sustainable development”-development
which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs - must be factored into tourism development. This consideration is reflected in the term "ecotourism,” which
is referred to variously as ecological or environmental tourism, nature or green tourism, sustainable or responsible
tourism.
Ecotourism involves travel to relatively undisturbed natural areas with the specific object of studying,
admiring, and enjoying scenery, plants, and animals, as well as any cultural features found in these areas. It is
distinguished from mass or resort tourism by its lower impact on the environment, lower infrastructure
requirements, and its role in educating tourists about natural environments and cultural values.
Fully aware of its significance, the government of Vietnam has prioritized ecotourism in its strategy for
tourism development to ensure both sustainability and economic benefits. Though ecotourism in Vietnam is at a
beginning stage of development, it is expected to grow strongly through support from government and international
organizations.
