Rationale
Yorba Linda Middle School has had an increase of D's & F's
on progress reports for 6 straight quarters. Yearly needs
assesment showed a lack of self confidence in ability to
succeed. Adminstrators wanted school counselors to target
students who made D & F lists two quarters in a row. The
Small group targeted ways to improve self confidence in
students abilites while also teaching study skills,
organziation, and time management techniques.

their following quarter grades decreased from
90% to 40% resulting in half of the students

report.

Reflection
I would say my experience running a small group for the third time
was excellent. I believe each time it becomes more natural for me
and it allows me to really connect with the students more instead
of being nervous about the group. I would also say having the
privilege of being able to have recognition of how well the
previous group went and being asked to do this one was amazing.
I would say being able to understand better the differences
between achievement data and achievement related data helped
me to frame my lessons in a way that helps improve both at the
same time. This allowed me to help students not only achieve
better grades but learn skills that will be crucial as they jump from
middle school to high school. I believe for me as well it showed me
the benefit of finding and using evidence based practices while
also using previous tools I have used while adjusting the content
to best fit the set of students I am working with.
