ASSIGNMENT :-1
Ans:- The ordinary meaning of guidance is the act of guiding, helping, assisting,
and suggesting progress and showing the way for somebody to follow. The MacMillan
English Dictionary for Advanced Learners (2002) defines guidance as advice about
what one should do or how one should behave. The word Guidance has its root in the
word "Guide" which means to direct, steer, inform, and to guide. Thus, guidance
means 'to direct', 'to point out,'to show the path'. It is the assistance or help rendered
by a more experienced person to a less experienced person to solve certain major
problems of the individual (less experienced) i.e. educational, vocational, personal,
etc. It is a piece of friendly advice and personal help offered by an individual known
as the guide or guidance expert. It focuses attention on the welfare of the individual.
In our society, many people encounter different problems in their life. They lack
information and direction. It is a process of assisting individuals to help themselves
through their efforts, to discover and to develop their potential resources for personal
fulfillment and social usefulness. The focal point of guidance is 'an individual, not his
problem. Man needs guidance throughout his life In that sense guidance is a lifelong
process. He needs it even from his infancy. He learns everything from society. Society
guides the individual to learn, to adjust oneself to the physical and social
environment. Thus, we may say that guidance is a personal help rendered by society
to the individual to enable him to adjust to the physical and social environment and to
solve the problems of life.
The scope of guidance is all-pervading. Its scope is very vast in the light of
modernization and industrialization and is ever increasing. As life is getting complex
day by day, the problems for which expert help is needed are rapidly increasing. The
scope of guidance extends horizontally to much of the social context, to matters of
prestige in occupations, to the broad field of social trends and economic
development. Crow and Crow have rightly quoted, "As now interpreted. guidance
touches every aspect of an individual's personality-physical, mental. emotional and
social. It is concerned with all aspects of an individual's attitudes and behaviour
patterns. It secks to help the individual to integrate all of his activities in terms of his
basic potentialities and environmental opportunities." Regarding the scope of the
guidance, Kothari Commission was of the view-"Guidance services have a much
wider scope and function than merely that of assisting students in making
educational and vocational choices. The aims of guidance are both adjective and
developmental: it helps the student in making the best possible adjustments to the
situations in the educational institutions and the home. Guidance, therefore, should
be regarded as an integral part of education." Students in the twenty-first century
have faced many complex and difficult situations i.e. to make wise curricular and
other curricular choices,to acquire basic study skills for optimum achievement,
adjustment with peers, etc. All these situations are within the purview of guidance. In
its beginning guidance was concentrated on problems relating to vocations. It was
largely concerned with getting jobs for young people. Guidance services are meant to
help students make proper adjustments to the environment in which they are living.
Now guidance has gone far beyond this. It is now concerned with the entire individual
in all aspects. Even though the guidance programme is addressed to the whole
individuals treated as an integral unit it is possible to classify an individual's
problems where students require assistance.
1. Development of personality:
Students development of
intellect, physical development, mental development,
emotional development etc. is indicate the development of
personality. The importance of Intellectual development is
given in classroom of school, but other fields do not get
that too much importance, i.e. other areas of personality of
development is neglected. Under the guidance, the
emphasis is on the other developmental aspects of the
students. So, it can be said that Guidance and counseling
program is essential for the all round development of
students.
2. Adjustment:
Students may be pressurized for various activities of the school. For this, the mental
health of students is interrupted. Due to the physical degradation of the student,
mental health is also damaged. That’s why Guidance and counseling services
are needed for these students. Because through this instruction, the students are
overcome with various mental
problems like stress, frustration, conflict, etc.
4. Time management:
7. Individual differences:
Every person or child is different from each other. It differs in I.Q, E.Q, attention,
memory, thinking, imagination, attitude, abilities, interests, etc. Guidance and
counseling is to take care of these aspects and fix different functions in education.
ASSIGNMENT :-2
Q1) What is group counselling? Explain the benefit of group
counselling. Explain the drawbacks of group counselling.
Ans:- Group guidance includes those activities of guidance that are carried out in a
group situation to assess its members to have experiences desirable or even
necessary for making intelligent educational, vocational, and social decisions. Such
group activities save time and ne.Further certain common problems can be
advantageous discussed among groups of students. It also prepares the way for
individual counseling. Some of the activities of group guidance are group discussion,
orientation programmers, career conferences, class talks, and group career planning.
It als0 includes many informal types of playgroups. Group guidance is an important
part of the guidance programme. Guidance programme aims to help an individual in
his self-direction, self-knowledge, and self-realization. But it cannot be achieved in a
social vacuum. Many important experiences of children are taking place in a group.
Group refers to the collection of people, the interaction between individuals, the
development of shared perceptions, the development of affective ties, and the
development of interdependence of roles. Group guidance is guiding the individual in
a group sitwation. The term group guidance was first introduced by Bennett in his
book "Guidance in-group". Just a collection individuals may not be called a group for
organizing guidance activities. Students in a group with common problems and
concerns are helpedingroups i.e. small or large. Group guidance encompassesthose
activities of guidance that are carried on in a group situation to assist its members to
have experiences desirable or even necessary for making-appropriate decisions in
the prevailing contexts. It provides an opportunity for meeting, interacting, getting
information, sharing ideas and knowledge, planning future activities, and making
decisions thereon. Thus, it assists several students to attain satisfactory
developmentor adjustment to their respective individual or collective life situations. It
occurs in a setting in which the guidance personnel encounters students in a group.
1) Students can discuss issues with their peers, who may better understand
student issues.
2) Students can learn from others who have similar problems. Another student in
the group may have gone through a similar situation and can offer support.
3) Students can gain multiple perspectives from other group members. Other
group members can provide guidance about the situation.
4) Students can pick up new skills that they can use in their daily lives, including
social and interpersonal skills, which will help create and sustain strong
relationships.
5) Students can find acceptance of their issues because other group members
may understand what it’s like to be in their position.
6) Groups are often the most effective counseling method to treat the types of
concerns that university students are facing. Students often find the
perspective and support of their peers beneficial.
The drawbacks of group counselling are:-
a.Personality clashes:
Personality clashes can happen due to the different nature of people. There will be
some disagreements with the team when a problem is discussed. A dominating
personality will try to rule the entire group that others cannot explain their opinion.
This issue has to be fixed by the trainer before becoming a huge clash and must
ensure that the issue is fixed.
b. Comments:
While sharing the opinion some of the group members will pass comments that will
again leave the person in frustration. It can be rectified in a hostile manner and also in
an emotional way. The fear of receiving information and the comments given by the
other participants will cause depression in the minds of a person.
c. Trust:
Sometimes people will feel uncomfortable to reveal their problems and to break their
trust and to share and forward personal ideas. This will cause some trouble to people
as they are obligated to their feelings. Sometimes the person will be rejected. Group
counseling also paves way for fear of rejection.
This group counseling activity will sometimes make people curious at certain things.
In this case, people will feel uncomfortable to play a certain role when they will be
extremely abused. It also coincides with the extreme graphic details about the past. It
can emerge in a certain way to explore extreme information about an individual.
e. Inherent risks:
Few members in the group will exhibit their aggressive behavior that may cause
clashes. Fragile people will not be able to understand what will be going on in the
group. It has to be analyzed that the group becomes more confidentially damaged as
to endure the practices. They cannot manage the inherent risks that members will
confidentially breakthrough at a certain level. It will be bounded by certain private
sessions.
f. Social phobias:
Some people will be nervous while speaking before a crew. But this counseling
requires the individual to come in front to address themselves. It has to be addressed
in front of the entire group. This sometimes causes detailed research about the
phobias that are spoken in front of others.
g. Expensive:
