Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers
Objectives:
 Students will be able to change mixed numbers to fractions
 Students will be able to add numbers with different denominators
 Students will be able to subtract numbers with different denominators
State Standards:
5.NSF.1
Context: I am teaching this lesson because adding and subtracting fractions is a crucial part in
the basics of math. It is a key lesson that will be used throughout the rest of their years in math in
school. The unit before this lesson would be numbers sense and base ten. Students will learn
about decimals and multi digit whole numbers. They will learn about multiplying and dividing
these numbers and the relationships that they have. The children’s knowledge of decimals will
help with this lesson because decimals and fractions go hand in hand with one another. The
lessons that follow this will be about multiplying and dividing fractions and solving real world
problems relating to fractions. I will be teaching the students about adding and subtracting mixed
numbers prior to them learning how to multiply and divide them. This is the step before because
it is necessary and easier to learn addition and subtraction before multiplication and division.
Data: The students will be put into groups of 4. 2 students who are confident in understanding
the beginning of the lesson will be paired with 2 students who seem to be struggling with the
lesson. I will be pairing strong students with struggling students because in the group work the
stronger students can help the others try to understand the concept. I will take notice to which
students are grasping the idea and pair them with those who are not getting it as easily. There
will be a worksheet during small work that I will collect after being finished. I will observe the
students and take note of their success during group work. The online interactive part is graded
and a competition between the students so I will be able to view it as they go along.
Materials:
Introduction – whiteboard
Teacher Directed – worksheet of problems of basic addition and subtraction mixed number
problems
Collaborative – paper cut outs of pizzas
Independent Digital Content - Math Jam - Learn Math Together website accessed on
personal/school issued computers
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
I will introduce the topic to the students at the beginning of the class. On the whiteboard, I will
demonstrate the steps of adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. This will be a
review for the students at this point. Then, I will move on into the unlike denominators. I will
show them how to change the denominators into the same, which at that point they will know
how to complete the problem because before this lesson I taught them how to add and subtract
like denominators. I will create my own problems on the board that look familiar to students. My
goal during the introduction is to show the similarity between what they are learning that’s new,
to what they already know. There is only one step they need to learn to finish these new
problems. I want them to go into the small groups with a pretty strong sense of how to complete
the problems.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
Students will complete a worksheet of problems I have created. There will be 4 problems. After
completing these, we will go over them as a class. I will fix any problems that arise when they
are completing the worksheet. After completing these and going over the answers, students
should have a pretty strong sense of what to do with adding and subtracting mixed numbers.
Collaborative (20 minutes):
Students will get into groups that I create. There will be miniature cut out paper pizzas that I
printed. In these groups, students will work on adding and subtracting different amount of pizzas
and pizza slices. I will walk around viewing the students in their groups and correcting them
when I see errors. This will be beneficial for visual learners because this will be a hands on part
of the lesson where they can visually see the amounts in front of them.
Independent Digital (10 minutes):
Math Jam - Learn Math Together

This is an interactive website where students will compete online to test what they know. I will
be able to see their scores and see how they did against each other. This way I will see how each
student does on their own and I know who to focus on and who may need more help. Kids who
are competitive will enjoy this part of the lesson because it gives them the chance to show the
other children how well they understand the concept.
Closure (5 minutes):
I will collect the worksheets completed at the beginning of class. I will answer any extra
questions the children may have at the end of the lesson. Students will be given a brief summary
of what the next class will entail and how it is connected to what we learned in this lesson.
Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
The first piece of multimedia I used is the educational game with the pizza cutouts. This is
especially helpful for the visual learners because it is a hands on experience and children are able
to visualize the fractions as a number in their mind but also how it looks as pieces of a whole.
This supports the objective because the pieces of pizza and pizzas as a whole represent whole
numbers and fractions together. This is a cheap but effective way to help teach a lesson.

The second piece of media I used is a website for students to compete in completing problems of
mixed numbers. This website can test how well the students are understanding the standards and
objectives I will be trying to teach them. This website is supported by math teachers across the
United States that use their activities on the website every day in their classroom.
