II. SUMMARY:
The story is an ancient form of oral story-telling to teach long-lasting social and ethical values. The
main character is Maui, a little hero for he has a super kite , contending with super-powers, the Four
Great Winds. The conflict is between the human being and the natural elements: Maui tries to control
the Four Great Winds. Supernatural character: The Keeper-of-the-Winds Supernatural events: The Soft
Wind and the Great Winds help to fly the kite. Connection between the natural and supernatural world
Maui asks the Keeper-of-the-Winds to bring out the Soft Wind and the Great Winds to fly his kite. He
was initially wise enough to heed the Keeper’s advice about respecting the winds but then he becomes
overconfident and takes power into his own hands. He underestimates the power of the Four Winds that
he unleashes. Through his stupidity, he brings havoc to his village and they shun him. He rises because
he learns humility, and loneliness helps him to learn to forecast the weather and he regains the respect
of the village. He becomes a reliable person and the villagers respect his wisdom. The Point of View is
a teaching point: Respect Nature and Nature will respect you.
1.Even the Keeper-of-the-Winds became friendly towards him. But Maui had learned his lesson.
