At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:


a. Identify the notes and rests of the fundamental of music
b. Visualize different kinds of notes and rests symbols
c. Draw the symbol of notes and rests

NOTES & RESTS SYMBOLS

1. Whole Note and Whole Rest

A whole note (American) or semibreve (British)


is represented by an oval and has no stem. It
lasts for four (4) beats.

The whole rest is a small square that hangs


down from a line on the staff. It also lasts for four
(4) beats.

A half note (American) or minim (British) is


represented by a small oval with a stem that

5. Sixteenth Note and Rest


A sixteenth note (American) or semiquaver
(British) are notated with an oval, filled-in note
head and a straight note stem with two flags. It
lasts for a one-quarter (1/4) of a beat. It can also
be written attached to other sixteenth notes like
this:

A sixteenth rest looks like an eighth rest with a


second hook. It also lasts for a one-quarter (1/4)
of a beat.

E. Generalization
