I. Introduction

Business research is a process of acquiring detailed information of all the areas of business and using such information
in maximizing the sales and profit of the business. Such a study helps companies determine which product/service is most
profitable or in demand. In simple words, it can be stated as the acquisition of information or knowledge for professional or
commercial purpose to determine opportunities and goals for a business.

Business research can be done for anything and everything. In general, when people speak about business research it
means asking research questions to know where the money can be spent to increase sales, profits or market share. Such
research is critical to make wise and informed decisions.

V. Lecture notes and lesson content

A. WHAT IS RESEARCH?

 Research is "creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge.”

 It involves the collection, organization and analysis of evidence to increase understanding of a topic, characterized by a
particular attentiveness to controlling sources of bias and error.

 Another definition of research is given by John W. Creswell, who states that "research is a process of steps used to collect
and analyze information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue". It consists of three steps: pose a question, collect
data to answer the question, and present an answer to the question.

 The primary purposes of basic research (as opposed to applied research) are documentation, discovery, interpretation, and the
research and development (R&D) of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge.

B. COMPONENTS OF RESEARCH

a. Title page
- The title page is the first page of your article, and therefore it is important to have a well-formatted title page that
clearly represents your paper. This page should include all the information necessary for a reader to identify the
contents of the article, its author(s), origin of the article, and the article type.

b. Preface (Approval sheet, Acknowledgement, Dedication, Abstract and Table of Contents)

- A preface is your opportunity to inform your audience about your experiences during the writing of your thesis or
dissertation. A preface is much more personal than other types of academic writing. It is written mainly in the first
person and is one of the few places were using first-person is considered acceptable.

C. CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction - An introduction summarizes all of the things you've learned from your research. While it can feel good to
get your preface done quickly, you should write the rest of your paper first. Then, you'll find it easy to create a clear overview.
Include a strong quotation or story upfront.

Statement of the Problem - The problem statement is your opportunity to explain why you care and what you propose to
do in the way of researching the problem. A problem statement is an explanation in research that describes the issue that is in need
of study.

Assumption/Null Hypothesis – A researcher trying to discover the relationship between two variables must believe that the
relationship between the two variables exists and can be discovered. This belief is called research assumption. The null
hypothesis is a typical statistical theory which suggests that no statistical relationship and significance exists in a set of given
single observed variable, between two sets of observed data and measured phenomena.

Significance of the Study - The significance of a study is its importance. It refers to the contribution(s) to and impact of the
study on a research field. The significance also signals who benefits from the research findings and how.

Scope and Limitation - A scope limitation is a restriction on an audit that is caused by the client, issues beyond the control
of the client, or other events that do not allow the auditor to complete all aspects of his or her audit procedures.

Definition of Terms - Definition of terms is usually an annex to a work (book, research paper, pamphlet, etc.) either at the
beginning or more likely near the end with a list of acronyms, jargon, credits, etc. This is an important part of Research paper or report
is that in which the key or important terms in the study are clearly defined.
