1)describe the inputs, processes and outputs for the wheat farm shown in figure 3.35.

- a wheat farms needs inputs which include the raw material and the factors of production
needed to start production. A wheat farm needs land, energy, labour etc to start producing
wheat. Processes and production method means what is done with the raw material, in a wheat
farm , preparing land, ploughing, fertilising etc is needed to produce the good. When inputs and
processes are taken into account the final result out of the input and processes in known as the
output, in a wheat farm it is the main product “wheat” , by- product which will be hay or food
for animals, and waste product which will be stubble enriched soil for next year.

2)a explain the difference between arable and pastoral farming .

Arable farming Pastoral farming

Cultivate crops and are not involved with with Related to keeping livestock
livestock

May be monoculture (focus on one product) May focus on different products ( dairy, meat,
rearing)

Products are heterogeneous

Eg - wheat Eg - dairy cattle

B what is mixed farming?

- mixed farming is where arable as well as pastoral farming is done. Therefore there is more
production of both crops and livestock products.

3) discuss the differences between:

A) commercial and subsistence farming

Commercial farming Subsistence farming

Selling of outputs ( profit motive) Consumed by the farmer himself

Usually intensive Usually extensive

Large outputs Smaller outputs

Eg - farms owned by TNC’s Eg- nomadic farming

B)intensive and extensive farming

extensive intensive

Small amount of agricultural produce High outputs

Low inputs High inputs

Can be both arable and pastoral More of viticulture, market gardening etc

More land Small land area

4) describe characteristics of organic farming

- organic farms do not use manufactured chemicals ( chemical pesticides )

- Animal and green manures are used , mineral fertilisers

- Higher inputs of labour needed

- Likely to result in soil erosion

- Higher profits, trending
