UPSC essay syllabus: Remain as close to the topic as possible i.e. maintaining the essence of the topic. Arrange arguments in an orderly fashion. Remain concise. The reward will be given for exact and effective expression. What is an "Essay"? A detailed discussion of the topic. Expressing your point of view. Persuading the examiner with your point of view. How to utilize the existing knowledge in essay writing. Purpose of Essay writing 1) Knowledge: Choosing a topic based on the content and knowledge. How to decide whether we know the content or not. Understanding the theme of the essay. Example of Patriarchy related topic. Substantiating the dimensions. Interest areas. 2) Personality traits When you have a time crunch then your true personality comes out. Leadership: when you take a stand in your essay. Rationality: Decision-Making skill, rational and logical. Compassionate: Pro migrants, pro sc/st, pro-women views, etc. Good communication skills: Able to clearly convey what you intend to. Problem-solving skills: When you give problems of the topic and you don’t provide a solution then it doesn’t give a good reflection. Whether the solution provided is pragmatic or utopian. 3) Comprehension skill: Clearly conveying the intent. Small sentences, no or very few grammatical errors, etc. 4) Ability to filter the content: Before the examination: For example: "Education" based topic, how to prepare the topic holistically like including the quotes, anecdotes, reports, etc. How to prepare themes holistically. During the examination: No compromise with the coherence of the essay. Do not try to adjust unnecessary quotes. 5)Multi-dimensionality: Explore the topic from multiple dimensions. 6) Coherence: Subheadings and linking statements. Discussion about the examples of the same. How to create coherence: Use subheadings like: The journey so far( evolutionary aspects) The dismal state of affairs Double-edged sword.
