A brief discussion about the importance of Essay writing on a regular basis

Doubts about Essay writing


UPSC essay syllabus:
 Remain as close to the topic as possible i.e. maintaining the essence of the topic.
 Arrange arguments in an orderly fashion.
 Remain concise.
 The reward will be given for exact and effective expression.
What is an "Essay"?
 A detailed discussion of the topic.
 Expressing your point of view.
 Persuading the examiner with your point of view.
 How to utilize the existing knowledge in essay writing.
Purpose of Essay writing
 1) Knowledge:
 Choosing a topic based on the content and knowledge.
 How to decide whether we know the content or not.
 Understanding the theme of the essay.
 Example of Patriarchy related topic.
 Substantiating the dimensions.
 Interest areas.
 2) Personality traits
 When you have a time crunch then your true personality comes out.
 Leadership: when you take a stand in your essay.
 Rationality: Decision-Making skill, rational and logical.
 Compassionate: Pro migrants, pro sc/st, pro-women views, etc.
 Good communication skills: Able to clearly convey what you intend to.
 Problem-solving skills: When you give problems of the topic and you don’t provide a
solution then it doesn’t give a good reflection.
 Whether the solution provided is pragmatic or utopian.
 3) Comprehension skill:
 Clearly conveying the intent.
 Small sentences, no or very few grammatical errors, etc.
 4) Ability to filter the content:
 Before the examination:
 For example:
 "Education" based topic, how to prepare the topic holistically like including the quotes,
anecdotes, reports, etc.
 How to prepare themes holistically. 
 During the examination:
 No compromise with the coherence of the essay.
 Do not try to adjust unnecessary quotes.
 5)Multi-dimensionality:
 Explore the topic from multiple dimensions.
 6) Coherence:
 Subheadings and linking statements.
 Discussion about the examples of the same.
 How to create coherence:
 Use subheadings like:
 The journey so far( evolutionary aspects)
 The dismal state of affairs
 Double-edged sword.
 All that glitter is not gold.
 A silver lining in the dark cloud (prospects).
 Each paragraph has to be interlinked.
 7) Writing-skill: Paragraph formation should be small and proper.
 No use of bullet points, short forms, etc.
 Highlighting keywords/main points.
 Inboxing diagrams, Graphs, etc.
 8)Time Management:
 Based on the practice and as per strength and weakness.
 Broader understanding is needed.

 Original.
 Specific yet explanatory.
 Well organized.
 Relevance.
A Well Organized: Introduction, Body, Conclusion
 In the introduction: Tell them what you are going to tell them in the essay.
 Around 150 to 200 Words.
 Like trailer of the movie
 Body
 Conclusion
Introduction
 Quotes: Maximum 3, Do write the name if remember, explain the meaning of the quotes
which are not self-explanatory, and link it with the demand of the topic.
 Anecdote: Real or fictional.
 Examples of the same.
 Posting question.
 Current developments: Statistics, reports, etc.
 Premise(background)
 Definition based.
 Paradox.
 Conversation.
The topic for the next class: Body and conclusion, etc.
