What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological,

and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and
act. It also helps determine how we handle stress,
relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental
health is important at every stage of life, from
childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Why is mental health important?
Mental health is important because it
can help you to:
Cope with the stresses of life
Be physically healthy
Have good relationships
Work productively
Realize your full potential
Can my mental health change over time?
Over time, your mental health can
change. For example, you may be
dealing with a difficult situation, such as
trying to manage a chronic illness,
taking care of an ill relative, or facing
money problems. The situation may

wear you out and overwhelm your

ability to cope with it. This can worsen
your mental health. On the other hand,
getting therapy may improve your
mental health.
What are the signs that I
might have a mental
health problem?
When it comes to your emotions, it can be hard to know what is normal and what is
not. There are warning signs that you may have a mental health problem, including:

A change in your eating or sleeping Feeling unusually confused, forgetful,

habits angry, upset, worried, or scared
Withdrawing from the people and Having severe mood swings that cause
activities you enjoy problems in your relationships
Having low or no energy Having thoughts and memories that
Feeling numb or like nothing you can't get out of your head

Feeling helpless or hopeless are not true

Mental Health Continuum

Mental health is not a binary state- you are not either

mentally health or ill. Our mental health falls on a
continuum, ranging from excellent mental health to
severe symptoms such as panic attacks or major
depressive episodes.
WHAT IS MENTAL
ILLNESS?
Mental illness is a general term for a group of illnesses that
may impact on a person's thoughts, perceptions, feelings
and behaviours. Mental health issues and illnesses can
affect working and personal relationships. Counselling,
medication, or both can help you treat mental illness.

The relationship between stress and mental illness is

complex, but it is known that stress can worsen an episode
of mental illness. Most people can manage their mental
illness with medication, counselling or both. This page lists
some of the more common mental health issues and mental
illnesses.
TYPES OF
MENTAL ILLNESS
MOOD DISORDER

A mood disorder is a mental health condition that primarily affects your

emotional state. They can cause persistent and intense sadness, elation
and/or anger. Mood disorders are treatable — usually with a combination
of medication and psychotherapy (talk therapy).
PERSONALITY DISORDER
A personality disorder refers to a long-term pattern of thinking, behaviour
and emotion that is dysfunctional, extreme and inflexible. It causes
distress and makes it difficult to function in everyday life. People with
personality disorders find it hard to change their behaviour or adapt to
different situations. They may have trouble sustaining work or forming
positive relationships with others.

The personality traits associated with these disorders are present in all
individuals to varying extents since childhood, but they tend to be firmly
established only during adulthood.

SCHIZOPHRENIA
Mental illness characterized by psychosis, which is a distortion of reality in the mind of the
individual.

Schizophrenia causes psychosis and is associated with considerable disability and may
affect all areas of life including personal, family, social, educational, and occupational
functioning.

Stigma, discrimination, and violation of human rights of people with schizophrenia are
common.

More than two out of three people with psychosis in the world do not receive specialist
mental health care.

A range of effective care options for people with schizophrenia exist and at least one in
three people with schizophrenia will be able to fully recover.
Schizophrenia affects approximately 24 million people or 1 in 300 people (0.32%)
worldwide. This rate is 1 in 222 people (0.45%) among adults . It is not as common
as many other mental disorders.
EATING DISORDER
An eating disorder is a serious mental health condition that involves an
unhealthy obsession with eating, exercise or body shape.

Eating disorders can have a serious impact on the person affected, and
their family.

Anyone can have an eating disorder — but they are more common in
adolescents and young adults.
ANXIETY DISORDER
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health problems. They
include generalised anxiety disorders, social phobias, specific
phobias (for example, agoraphobia and claustrophobia), and
panic disorders.

Anxiety disorders are common mental health problems that

affect many people. Approximately 25% of the population have
an anxiety disorder that warrants treatment at some time in their
life and up to another 25% have less severe anxieties such as
fears of spider and snakes.

POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS
DISORDER (PTSD)
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's
triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it.
Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well
as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary

difficulty adjusting and coping, but with time and good self-care, they
usually get better. If the symptoms get worse, last for months or even years,
and interfere with your day-to-day functioning, you may have PTSD.
SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER
(DRUG ADDICTION)
Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a disease that affects a
person's brain and behavior and leads to an inability to control the use of a
legal or illegal drug or medicine. Substances such as alcohol, marijuana and
nicotine also are considered drugs. When you're addicted, you may continue
using the drug despite the harm it causes.

Drug addiction can start with experimental use of a recreational drug in social
situations, and, for some people, the drug use becomes more frequent. For
others, particularly with opioids, drug addiction begins when they take
prescribed medicines or receive them from others who have prescriptions.
DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER (DID)

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a mental health condition. People with

DID have two or more separate identities. These personalities control their
behavior at different times. Each identity has its own personal history, traits,
likes and dislikes. DID can lead to gaps in memory and hallucinations (believing
something is real when it isn’t).

Dissociative identity disorder used to be called multiple personality disorder

or split personality disorder.
