Autism Spectrum Disorder
The view on autism in the world has evolved over the years. In the past, individuals with autism
were often misunderstood and stigmatized. Today, there is more awareness and acceptance of
autism, and efforts are being made to support individuals with autism in education, employment,
and other areas of life.
As a teacher, educating children with autism can be challenging, but there are strategies and best
practices that can be used to support their learning. These strategies include using visual aids,
providing clear and concise instructions, and creating a structured and predictable environment
(National Autistic Society, 2021). In addition, it is essential to take care of children with autism
by understanding their unique needs and strengths, providing opportunities for social interaction,
and fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment (National Institute of Mental
Health, 2021). The educational practices for learners with autism vary across developing and
non-developing countries. In developed countries, such as the United States and the United
Kingdom, there are well-established educational programs and support services for individuals
with autism. In contrast, developing countries may have limited resources and less awareness
about autism, resulting in a lack of specialized services and support (World Health Organization,
2021).
Autism is a complex disorder that requires specialized education and support. As a teacher, it is
essential to understand the unique needs of children with autism and use evidence-based
strategies to support their learning. In developing countries, efforts are needed to increase
awareness and resources for individuals with autism to ensure they receive the education and
support they need to thrive.
The aim of this study is to emphasize the significance of Autism Spectrum Disorder and its
crucial importance for educators. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an important topic due to
its prevalence, impact on individuals and families, and the need for specialized education and
support. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in 54
children is diagnosed with autism (CDC, 2020), making it one of the most common
neurodevelopmental disorders.
Individuals with autism have unique strengths and challenges that require specialized education
and support. They may have difficulties with social communication, sensory processing, and
executive functioning, which can affect their learning and daily functioning (American
Psychiatric Association, 2013). Educators play a critical role in providing specialized education
and support to individuals with autism which can improve their outcomes and reduce the
economic and societal burden. They need to understand the unique needs of these individuals
and use evidence-based strategies to support their learning and development (National Institute
of Mental Health, 2021).
In addition to the impact on individuals and families, autism has economic and societal
implications. The cost of autism to society is estimated to be in the billions of dollars, including
direct medical and educational costs, as well as indirect costs such as lost productivity and
reduced quality of life (Leigh & Du, 2015). Therefore, it is essential to invest in specialized
education and support for individuals with autism to improve their outcomes and reduce the
economic and societal burden.
