MY COUNTRY EL SALVADOR

El Salvador is a country in Central America. It is the smallest country in continental America, and is
affectionately called the "Tom Thumb of the Americas" ("Pulgarcito de America"). With a population of
approximately 7 million people on 21,000 km2, it is the most densely populated nation in Central America,
and is smaller in size than the neighboring countries. The capital city of San Salvador is the most important
metropolis of the republic.

The area was originally named by the Pipil ( Maya civilization) "Cuzhcatl", in Spanish "Cuzcatlan", which in
Nahuatl means "the land of precious things."

In the early sixteenth century, the Spanish conquistadors ventured into ports to extend their dominion to
the area. They called the land "Provincia De Nuestro Señor Jesucristo El Salvador Del Mundo" ("Province of
Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World"), which was subsequently abbreviated to "El Salvador".

CLIMATE. El Salvador has a tropical climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons. In general it is
warm rather than hot. El Salvador has two seasons, The rainy season from May to October and the dry
one from November to March. Almost all the annual rainfall occurs during this time, and during these
months, air flowing from the Caribbean has had most of the precipitation wrung out of it while passing over
the mountains in Honduras. By the time this air reaches El Salvador, it is dry, hot, and hazy.

Culture. Mestizo culture dominates the country, heavy in both Native American Indigenous and
European Spanish influences. The Catholic Church plays an important role in the Salvadoran culture.
Painting, ceramics and textiles are the principal manual artistic mediums. Writers Francisco
Gavidia (1863– 1955), Salarrué (Salvador Salazar Arrué) (1899–1975), Claudia Lars, Alfredo
Espino, Pedro Geoffroy Rivas, Manlio Argueta, José Roberto Cea, and poet Roque Dalton are among the
most important writers from El Salvador. Notable 20th-century personages include the late filmmaker
Baltasar Polio, female film director Patricia Chica, artist Fernando Llort, and caricaturist Toño
Salazar.
Amongst the more renowned representatives of the graphic arts are the painters Augusto
Crespin, Noe Canjura, Carlos Cañas, Giovanni Gil, Julia Díaz, Mauricio Mejia, Maria Elena Palomo de
Mejia, Camilo Minero, Ricardo Carbonell, Roberto Huezo, Miguel Angel Cerna, (the painter and writer
better known as MACLo), Esael Araujo, and many others.

Cuisine Salvadorean food is generally less spicy than that of other of

Central and Souther American countries. Most people eat black beans,

refried beans, thick maize tortillas, rice, eggs, and fruit, and those who can afford it enjoy meat
El Salvador's most notable dish is the pupusa. Pupusas are a thick hand-made corn tortilla (made using, a
maize or rice flour dough used in Latin American cuisine stuffed with one or more of the following: cheese
(usually a soft Salvadoran cheese, a popular example is Quesillo con loroco), chicharrón (a ground pork
product, often mixed with tomato paste), and refried beans. Loroco is a vine flower bud native to Central
America. There are also vegetarian options, often with ayote(a type of squash) or garlic. Some adventurous
restaurants even offer pupusas stuffed with shrimp or spinach.

Two other typical Salvadoran dishes are panes rellenos (Bread with chicken), Yuca frita which is deep fried
cassava root served with curtido (a pickled cabbage, onion and carrot topping) and pork rinds or pepesquitas
(fried baby sardines). The Yuca is sometimes served boiled instead of fried. Pan con Pavo (bread with
turkey) is a warm turkey submarine sandwich similar to a hoagie. The turkey is marinated and then roasted
with Pipil spices and handpulled. This sandwich is traditionally served with turkey, tomato, and watercress.

El Salvador : Life Style

Recreation. Football is El Salvador's national game; basketball is popular, and every town has a gym and
athletics field. Numerous adventure sports are popular, including hiking, surfing, fishing, and
kayaking. Socializing fills many leisure hours, but Salvadoreans also enjoy poetry, music, theatre, and
cultural festivals, as well as outings to the beach or the lakes.

Holidays and Celebrations. National holidays include New Year's Day (1 January); Easter Week; Labor
Day (1 May); the Feast of Saint Salvador (three days at the beginning of August); Independence Day (15
September), which commemorates the day in 1821 when Father José Matias Delgado declared the country
independent from Spanish rule; Columbus Day (12 October); and Christmas Day (25 December).

Other holidays include All Souls' Day, which is observed on 2 November with special masses and processions
to cemeteries to honor departed loved ones. It is believed that the souls of the dead come back to earth on
this day each year to visit the family and friends they left behind. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
one of the patron saints of both Central and South America, takes place on 12 December. In El Salvador it
is called el Día del Indio (“the Day of the Indian”).

TRANSPORTATION El Salvador has one International airport. Their railways stretch 562 km but have not
been operational since 2005. There are 2 harbors, the Acajutla and the Puerto Cutuco. Chicken buses are
the national means of transportation. They take you from one city to another, and are essentially old school
buses from America. Each bus is brightly, and decoratively painted and personalized on the inside. People
also travel by car, taxi, truck and plane.
