The Plan:
My idea was to create a marketing campaign for FOPP to promote the release of new,
limited edition ‘Tour Bundles’. The bundles would contain limited edition records, tour
merchandise and various music formats. The main focus of the bundles would be tour
exclusive merchandise that is no longer available directly from the artist. The livestream
video will be showing off some of the exclusive products and talking about where the
customer can buy them. For my pre-recorded elements I plan to create one video that would
be posted on social media as a pre-stream video to encourage the viewers to join the
livestream later on. The second pre-recorded element will be filmed like a TikTok with
transitions showing off one product in more detail. If I can do, I would like to film part of my
video in a FOPP store however, if this isn’t possible then I will be filming in my flat. I will use
my phone to film both the livestream and the pre-recorded videos but will connect my phone
to my laptop to stream directly through OBS for the live element.

Differences Between OTA and Streaming:

Streaming allows viewers to watch content any time and any place without having to
download it through sites such as Netflix, Prime or YouTube. For OTA, Over-The-Air,
viewers can only watch the content at the time it is being shown for example, daytime TV
shows or soaps that are on at a set time twice a week. TV shows used to be shown at
specific times during the week however, with services like BBC iPlayer, viewers can now go
back and stream tv shows or films whenever they want. In order to watch OTA content, a
viewer needs a tv and an antenna, but streaming is more efficient for situations such as
commuting on the tube where viewers can watch Netflix on a mobile device. A downside to
over the air broadcasting is that as it uses an antenna to receive signal, if users are in an
area with poor reception their TV audio and visual may seem pixelated, jumpy and might cut
out randomly. Poor signal can also be caused by bad weather. In 2022, 23% of adults who
regularly use TV antenna for over-the-air broadcasting were aged between 18 and 49 as
consumers are being most cost conscious. Whilst streaming is more efficient and easily
accessible, a TV license is only £159 a year to watch over-the-air broadcasts compared to
Netflix’s fee of £191.88 with their most expensive plan.

Service Minimum a year Maximum a year

Netflix £59.88 £191.88
Hulu £95.88 £995.88
Disney+ £79.90 £95.88
Whilst individual streaming services appear cheaper than a TV license for OTA, if one user
is subscribing to multiple services, it quickly adds up.

Evaluation of The Use of Video Streaming for Marketing Purposes:

Livestreaming makes it easy for viewers to interact directly with companies through
commenting, likes, sharing. Different platforms have different features on their livestreams
that allow the viewers to interact in different ways. For example, TikTok has an option for
viewers to send gifts to the streamer. The different methods of interaction encourage viewers
to communicate not only with the brands but with each other which builds a community of
viewers and consumers all talking about a product or campaign. Another benefit to using live
streaming is that the interaction is instant. Viewers can get answers straight away and if the
stream is showing off a product, then the consumer also gets to see the product work in real
time. The overall result of the interaction is that companies can create a personal and direct
connection with their consumers.
Livestreaming is also useful for:
- Collecting customer feedback.
- Cutting down on costs as live footage can’t be edited.
- Creating accessible content for consumers.

Streaming through social media is also beneficial for companies to save money and
resources on pieces that would normally be done in person. This could be things like
demonstrations, product launches, event announcements, expert talks, Q&A’s and virtual
tours. On the other hand, live streaming has created various opportunities for consumers to
see footage they wouldn’t get in person such as behind-the-scenes of musicals, films or tv
shows; social media takeovers where one person takes control of a company’s social media
for a day and product unboxing / testing.

Analysis of My Video:
My pre-recorded segment encourages viewers to tune in to the stream later on so the call to
action is to watch my livestream. The livestream itself is filmed in a way to encourage the
audience to interact with the stream and then to visit the FOPP website. I chose to speak in
an informative but informal way to create that personal connection with the viewer. After
watching FOPP Cambridge’s TikTok’s, I noticed that the videos are filmed by one person
who does comedic videos following current trends and talks about the music rather than the
company. I wanted to use this tone in my own video so that it fit the style of FOPP whilst still
being a promotional video.

I watched various livestreams from gaming through to makeup hauls to research the
similarities between them. One thing I noticed on lives, especially on Twitch, was that
occasionally there was a technical issue or connection issue that caused the live to stop
however, the streamers always had a page to fill the gap whilst the issue was fixed. I
included a scene on OBS as a backup in case my livestream had any issues. When it came
to filming my livestream, about 3 quarters of the way through, my phone rang causing the
video to freeze as I was using my phone as my screen capture. As I was prepared, I was
able to flip to the scene whilst I reconnected my phone and continued filming. Having a
backup scene was useful as it meant that I didn’t have to re-film my video and also, if I was
live on YouTube or Twitch, I wouldn’t have had to completely stop my livestream.

In terms of marketing, I included the links to relevant social media platforms as well as the
website. I made sure to include the FOPP logo so there was consistent clear branding
throughout the stream. To improve, I could’ve included the FOPP logo in the first pre-
recorded segment as it was meant to direct consumers from one platform to another. I was
unable to film in a FOPP store due to timing issue however, I think filming in my flat still kept
that personal connection between myself and the audience. In future, I could try to actually
livestream on through social media rather than on OBS as I would be able to see how well
my live was doing.
