Chapter I

Introduction to the Study

1.1 Background of the Study

Learning a foreign language, whether in a school setting or online platforms,

is a key to unlock one’s understanding towards a different perspective and cultural

norms. With the rising popularity of Korean dramas, music, and culture, more

people are intrigued by the allure of these kinds of entertainment. There is no doubt

that businesses and enterprises will capitalize on this opportunity for it will be a

growing economy. “For an individual, speaking a foreign language improves the

functionality of your brain by challenging it to recognise, negotiate meaning, and

communicate in different language systems” (Telegraph reporters, 2013).

However, in some cases, individuals fail to recognize the benefits it poses,

especially with the mindset of learning a difficult language different from their

mother tongue and having no interest at all.

Khasinah (2014) suggested that “motivation, attitude, age, intelligence,

aptitude, cognitive style, and personality are considered as factors that greatly

influence someone in the process of his or her second language acquisition.” In

line with this, the researchers would like to find out how these factors make an

impact on the perceptions of Grade 12 learners and attitude is one of them. In his

study, Khasinah (2014) indicated that “learners who have positive attitudes learn

more, but also learners who learn well acquire positive attitudes.” Choy and Troudi

(2007) stated that “the feelings and emotions of foreign language learners

substantially affect their perceptions and attitudes towards that particular foreign

language. The increased level of personal motivation and interest in learning a

particular foreign language would most certainly yield better learning results.”

According to the Department of Education (2018), “aside from offering

Korean language class, DepEd currently implements five Special Program in

Foreign Language (SPFL) classes in Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and

Japanese in all public schools. The department has already recognized the need

to develop foreign language skills of learners amid the increasing impact of

globalization.” The researchers chose this study with the purpose of providing

substantial information to fellow researchers as well as foreign language teachers.

Teachers can take note of the views and opinions of the students with the intent of

improving teaching strategies and yielding positive results in Foreign Language

class. Amidst the difficulty of the subject, teachers may undertake necessary steps

to alter the negative attitudes and suggest ways to evoke the interests of learners

towards taking a foreign language subject.

The researchers of this study investigated and determined the perceptions

and the factors that influence Grade 12 learners towards Korean as an elective

subject in Senior High School.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the perceptions and factors that affect the

perceptions of the Grade 12 learners towards Korean as an elective subject in

Senior High School.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the perceptions of the learners towards taking Korean as an

elective subject in Senior High School?

2. What are the factors that influence the learners’ perceptions towards the

said subject?

3. What should be improved in teaching Korean as an elective subject in

Senior High School?

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study may benefit the following people:

School. This study can give awareness to the school since it addresses

concerns and perceptions of students towards learning foreign language as an

elective subject in Senior High School. If a positive view will be drawn out, the

school may implement foreign language as an elective subject even for lower

grade levels, especially to those who are interested in exploring a new language

and culture. In contrast, negative results may indicate adjustments to be made in

the said subject.

Teachers. This study can assist the teachers in employing better teaching

strategies depending on the learning pace of the students. Considering that it is a

foreign language subject, the teacher can gain more awareness on the interests

and willingness of the students to learn.

Parents. This study can help parents in understanding their children’s

perception on learning a foreign language as an elective subject in Senior High

School.

Learners. This study was beneficial for students who were interested in

going out of the country whether to study, to travel, or to work in the future. With

their prior knowledge on simple foreign, specifically, Korean, words and phrases,

students can communicate easier and faster.

Future Researchers. This study was advantageous to future researchers

as it provided further information and findings to related topics that they conducted.

Also, it presented substantial results and approaches for a different circumstance,

in case that their study focused on different foreign language subjects.

1.5 Definition of Terms

Elective Subject - refers to an ‘optional subject’ which is not compulsory

unlike core subjects (ask.unimelb.edu.au, 2015).

In this study, elective subject referred to the foreign language subject, which

is not considered mandatory and just an additional subject taught to Grade 12

students.

Korean - refers to belonging to or relating to North or South Korea, their

people, or their language (dictionary.cambridge.org, 2019).

In this study, Korean referred to the foreign language studied by the Grade

12 learners.

Learner - refers to someone who is learning about a particular subject or

how to do something (collinsdictionary.com, 2019).

In this study, the learner referred to the respondents are the Grade 12

students.

Perception - refers to a belief or opinion, often held by many people and

based on how things seem (dictionary.cambridge.org, 2019).

In this study, perception referred to the opinions of the Grade 12 learners

regarding the subject.

Senior High School - refers to a secondary school that students attend in

the three or four highest grades before college (yourdictionary.com, 2018).

In this study, senior high school is the level in which the Grade 12 learners

belong.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

This study, conducted on the 6th of January until the 6th of March 2020,

analyzes exclusively the perception of Grade 12 learners towards Korean as an

elective subject in Senior High School. In addition, the researchers seek to find out

the factors that affect the perceptions of the chosen respondents only and their

suggestions to improve the teaching of Korean as an elective subject in Senior

High School. The researchers conveniently picked seven (7) learners from each

section, with a total of twenty-one (21) respondents, and asked the guide questions

in their own respective classrooms. The respondents were interviewed with the aid

of the guide questions in order to gather sufficient data and information.

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

Local Literature

According to DepEd, “the Special Program in Foreign Language helped

learners to develop skills in listening, reading, writing, speaking, and viewing that

are fundamental in acquiring communicative competence in a second foreign

language. The Department of Education clarified that the Korean language will be

taught only as an elective. The clarification was made amid confusion that it would

replace the Filipino subject previously required in schools. It is a long-running

program by DepEd, first implemented in select schools in 2009 and which initially

only offered Spanish. Since then, the program expanded to include Nihongo,

French, German, Mandarin, and the latest in 2017, Korean. Each foreign language

class is allotted 4 hours per week “as an additional subject” (Gavilan, 2018).

The article “Annyeonghaseyo! DepEd to Introduce Korean Subject in Public

High Schools” (2017) noted that “learning the Korean language will provide better

“opportunities for local and international employment” and education grants in

Korea for selected Filipino students. Language is very important so teaching and

studying [foreign languages] in schools is very helpful to deepen the bilateral

understanding between the two nations.”

Mateo (2014) mentioned that “a Quezon City councilor has proposed a

resolution urging the Department of Education (DepEd) to integrate foreign

languages as an elective in the K-12 curricula for public and private schools in the

city. The students learning foreign languages such as French, Italian, Korean,

Japanese, and languages from countries that are common (for) Filipinos who are

currently working abroad, could be a great investment for those students who wish

to work overseas in the near future, second district Councilor Precious Hipolito-

Castelo said in her proposed resolution. She noted that Spanish is spoken by over

450 million people in 22 countries, while Mandarin is spoken by some 1 billion

people worldwide. The councilor added that Spanish and Mandarin-speaking

countries are huge markets for Filipino services, skills and talents.”

Local Studies

“In general, the study found out that Filipino Foreign Language (FL) learners

are instrumentally and extrinsically motivated. They are highly motivated to learn

FL because of economic and career opportunities, indicating that they are more

instrumentally motivated, that is, they desire to learn FL for pragmatic gains such

as getting a better job and even employment abroad. Likewise, the motivational

orientation of Filipino learners is influenced by their achievement goal orientation

and level of competence they achieved while learning the language. Learners are

motivated to learn a language in order to achieve mastery to get integrated into the

language community and competence in order to get employed and/or accepted

in further studies that require FL skills” (Gonzales, 2010, p.15-16).

“The role of attitude and motivation in the acquisition of a second language

was investigated in the studies by Castillo (1969), Feenstra and Castillo (1970),

and Castillo and Galang (1973). The major results of the 'Castillo study indicated

that attitudinal and motivational factors were very important in successfully

acquiring a second language. The subjects appeared to share their parents'

attitudes toward language learning. Parents who held positive attitudes toward

Americans tended to have children whose academic performance in school was

superior” (as cited in Ramos, 1979, p.6).

Estil and Germia (2013) suggested that “one's willingness to learn a

language can make him or her an apt candidate for many study abroad programs.

Some foreign programs require no prior language experience and offer an

intensive immersion experience prior to the selected program of study. Other

programs require only a few semesters of prior language instruction. Whatever

program you choose, continued language study while in a foreign country is typical.

Because students can focus on their language development while learning about

the culture, their daily experiences and courses complement one another, leading

to comparable or even better grades than at the home institution, where students

often take a myriad of courses that have little or no connection” (p. 19).

Foreign Literature

“People who speak another language score higher on tests and think more

creatively, have access to a wider variety of jobs and can more fully enjoy and

participate in other cultures or converse with people from diverse backgrounds”

(Stein-Smith, 2019).

Miller (n.d.) suggested that “when a child understands the importance of

understanding a language and can see how it directly applies to their life, they

learn faster. We have found that a contextual, theme-based curriculum can help

get students more excited to dive into language learning. When they are interested

in learning a language and they see meaningful connections to their lives, they

begin to take risks to produce language, which helps them to acquire it faster. The

strategies a language teacher uses have a big impact on language learning. For

example, watching a film in the target language and writing and performing skits in

the target language reach multiple learning styles. Offering an immersion

experience helps students connect the language learning to their everyday lives,

but rote vocabulary memorization and grammar drills create 'meaning-less'

language lessons. Exposure is an important factor in language comprehension and

acquisition.”

The article “5 Great Future Benefits of Learning Korean” (2018) mentioned

that “for starters, Korean culture is growing in popularity and profitability worldwide,

and most of the people from Korea are starting businesses at every corner of the

world. This makes it important for everyone to at least be able to hold a basic

conversation with them, to attract business owners to work with.”

The article “Top Ten Reasons to Learn Languages” (n.d.) noted that

“language is the most direct connection to other cultures. Being able to

communicate in another language exposes us to and fosters an appreciation for

the traditions, religions, arts, and history of the people associated with that

language.”

According to Regoli, (n.d.), “education in a second language can be

inconsistent. Some school districts stop their bilingual education in high school.

Some school districts do not offer a bilingual education as an option. Because of

this inconsistency, some students may lose some of their second language abilities

simply because they are not using it every day. For a bilingual education to be

effective, it must continue throughout the career of the students who choose to

participate in it.”

Richards (2017) added that “knowing a foreign language is not useful to

some people. For example, if you cannot afford to travel or are not interested in

visiting other countries, you might never get to speak the language with natives.

Learning a foreign language is challenging. Many languages have different

systems of grammar, and some languages use a completely different alphabet and

different sounds. And learning thousands of new vocabulary words is not easy,

either.”

According to Proctor (2015), “unlike Japanese and Chinese, Korean script

uses a phonetic alphabet which consists of 24 basic ‘letters’ (two fewer than

English). Created by King Sejong back in the 1400s, Korean was originally referred

to by scholars as a children’s script because it is so easy to learn. The Korean

language is being used more in professional and recreational settings, which

makes it even more accessible to Korean-language students.”

“K-pop culture and industry has a tremendous impact on the Korean

language. Listening to K-pop songs, one can come across plenty of cultural

expressions that one would not necessarily find in Korean textbooks. There are

also numerous industry-specific expressions that one can discover by being

interested in the music, browsing fan sites and watching Korean dramas about the

world of K-pop and K-pop idols” (Geikhman, 2020).

Ko (2017) explained that “the popularity of Korean entertainment and

culture, also called Hallyu, has spread rapidly across Asia and other parts of the

world. Many educators and researchers have paid special attention to the

facilitating role of pop culture in foreign language learning. Several studies in the

field of Korean as a foreign language (KFL) also reported that a strong interest in

Korean popular culture acts as an intense motivator for students to learn about

Korea and its culture and language.

Minardi (2019) mentioned that “the amount of time that it takes to learn a

language depends on which method of learning one chooses. If one chose to learn

a language through structured lessons, the minimum amount of time it will take

him or her for the easiest rated languages on the FSI scale is 600 hours over the

course of 6 months, and the hardest rated languages will take almost 2 years and

2200 hours to master. Learning a language abroad is easier than learning in a

classroom because of the constant immersion. Hearing and speaking a language

in context makes it much easier to cement vocabulary and word meanings in your

memory.”

According to Akalya (2017), “grades are the most common example of an

external or extrinsic motivation through which we can leverage learning. Many

believe that grades can act as incentives to make students work harder and learn

more, and the harder the grading system is, the better the results are.”

According to Crocker (2019), “if a student is only exposed to classroom drills

and dialogues, they might acquire substantial mastery of classroom

communication skills but still struggle to communicate in a natural language

environment. Therefore, exposure to the new language should not be the only

focus when learning the language, or they risk failing to know the correct usage of

language or when to use it.”

Carden (2018) noted that “for the average American, studying foreign

languages in school is a waste of time given all the other things she could be doing.

For the marginal American who would be nudged into a Spanish class rather than

art history or economics by just a little bit more subsidy, there is hardly anything to

be gained by making that choice. In light of what we actually know about what

people learn, retain, and use, the sad fact is that eliminating language

requirements would almost certainly be a very good policy move.”

Foreign Studies

Khasinah (2014) stated that “motivation, attitude, age, intelligence,

aptitude, cognitive style, and personality are considered as factors that greatly

influence someone in the process of his or her second language acquisition.

Experts state that those factors give a more dominant contribution in Second

Language Acquisition (SLA) to learners variedly depend on who the learners are,

their age, how they behave toward the language, their cognitive ability, and also

the way they learn. A learner studies a language because he is interested in the

people and culture of the target language or in order to communicate with people

of another culture who speak it.”

Yin and Ho (2013) wrote about “the Mandarin language course which is

offered to foreign language students either as a compulsory elective or free

elective course at university level. Nevertheless, the majority of the students are

still unable to communicate well in the language upon completion of the course.

They also included that the analysis shows that among the main factors that

motivate the respondents to choose Mandarin language as foreign language

course are; as an added value to get a job, to enrich the knowledge about

languages, and due to its commercial value and extensive use” (p. 80, 85).

Tse (2000) indicated that “the two most often mentioned reasons for

success noted by the participants were having teachers and professors willing to

aid students in their learning and having language input from family and community

interactions. One student mentioned that she believed that “[one of] the

contributions to my success was the willingness of my teachers and professors to

work with the class to understand certain aspects of the language”, while another

student touted the benefits of a “positive teaching environment” (p. 79).

Based on Damron and Forsyth’s (2012) studies, “teachers who expect all

students to perform at the same high levels and who fail to make

accommodations for students whose natural abilities make language learning a

slower but perhaps deeper process than that of their peers also likely contribute

to the high attrition rates associated with second language learning. When

teachers fail to recognize variability in student learning, slower students can

become discouraged and quit. Therefore, perhaps teaching at a slower pace

would be an effective method of improvement for the foreign language

teacher, along with implementing methods for teacher accountability.”

According to Kumagai (1994), “culture is not only inseparably related to

language, but also plays an important role throughout the process of language

teaching and learning. The question is not whether or not to teach culture, but,

rather, what kind of teaching can promote students' understanding of the nature of

the language, communication and human relations.”

Sheela and Ravikumar (2016) explained that “when we talk of exposure, it

includes inside the classroom exposure and outside the classroom exposure. In

the formal or inside classroom exposure to English, the teacher employs different

methods and approaches to achieve some specific results in the target language.

Activities in the classroom are planned. In the informal or outside the classroom

exposure to English, the activities are not planned. It may be friends, media or any

social gathering. The student will get a real time exposure to try and test his

language skills. These two exposures are mutually helpful for the student to

improve his language skills.”

Synthesis

Across different countries, exploring a foreign language has provided

various approaches and strategies to ensure the efficiency of the subject. Some

studies show that learning a foreign language does not guarantee the individual’s

fluency and ability to communicate with foreigners. Learners’ behavior and

perception towards learning foreign languages vary depending on personal

factors, whether positively or negatively. Assessing the numerous benefits of

learning a foreign language, particularly in the areas of business, work and career,

education, and travel and leisure, may indicate a positive outlook or perception.

Factors such as motivation, interest, and attitude of a student influence his or her

view towards the foreign language subject.

Chapter III

Research Design and Methodology

Research Design and Method

This research intended to determine and analyze the perceptions of Grade

12 learners towards Korean as an elective subject in Senior High School. It also

aimed to find out the different factors that influence their perceptions as well as the

possible approaches that can improve the teaching and learning strategies of the

subject.

The qualitative research design was used in this study. The method used in

this study was interview, particularly, a structured type, with the aid of the guide

questions dealing with the students’ perceptions and factors affecting them. The

researchers conducted an interview in the respondents’ respective classrooms at

around 1:00 - 1:20 in the afternoon. The chosen twenty-one (21) respondents

answered the guide questions thoroughly in order for the researchers to draw out

in-depth perceptions and collective concepts.

Research Locale

The researchers prepared the guide questions beforehand and conducted

the interview in the respective classrooms of the chosen respondents located in

the High School Building. With this, the data gathered were raw and contextual in

relation to the respondents. In case of clarifications and verifications regarding the

questions, the researchers were able to entertain them from the respondents.

Respondents

This study had a total of twenty-one (21) respondents, with seven (7)

learners coming from each section. Employing the convenience sampling, which

highlights the ease of accessibility and proximity to the researchers, the chosen

respondents were interviewed at around 1:00 - 1:20 in the afternoon, which is set

during lunch time.

Materials Used

The researchers made guide questions, which served as a basis in

interviewing the twenty-one (21) respondents. The interview was conducted at

around 1:00 - 1:20 in the afternoon, during lunch time, in order to acquire the

necessary information. In addition, the researchers made use of cellphones to

record the interviews in case there is a need to return to the respondents’ answers

with the intent of clarifying and validating information. After which, in analyzing, the

researchers utilized laptops to take note of the answers of the respondents and to

organize the gathered data. This way is deemed necessary for the purpose of

summarizing and interpreting the data.

Procedure

The guide questions concerning the students’ perceptions and factors that

affect them were prepared by the researchers. After which, the researchers went

to the respective classrooms of the twenty-one (21) chosen respondents, with

seven (7) learners coming from each section, who were selected through

convenience sampling, at around 1:00 - 1:20 in the afternoon, during lunch time.

The interview was conducted as the researchers go through a series of questions

that have been prepared beforehand. The whole process was recorded using a

cellphone to ensure the validity of the findings. The researchers monitored the

steps and materials needed for the study. The interpretation and analysis of data

followed data collection.

Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

Chapter 5 consists of three parts, (1) Summary, (2) Conclusions, and (3)

Recommendations.

Part One, Summary, Summarizes the essential points of the investigation

and findings.

Part Two, Conclusions, Presents the inferences drawn from the findings of

the study.

Part Three, Recommendations, Offers some recommendations based on

the findings and conclusions drawn from the study.

Summary

This study was conducted from January 6, 2020 until March 6, 2020 within

the premises of Assumption Iloilo. A sample of twenty-one (21) respondents, with

seven (7) learners coming from each section in Grade 12 were selected and

subjected to structured interviews conducted by the researchers themselves. The

sampling method used was convenience sampling.

The Grade 12 learners of Assumption Iloilo have various perceptions,

whether a positive or negative one, with regard to taking Korean as an elective

subject in Senior High School, but the recurring themes are the following:

advantages and disadvantages.

The Grade 12 learners of Assumption Iloilo have their own factors that

influenced their perceptions towards taking Korean as an elective subject in Senior

High School, and the recurring themes are the following: entertainment, interest,

tourism, teaching strategies, and work.

The Grade 12 learners of Assumption Iloilo have suggested alternative

strategies to improve Korean as an elective subject in Senior High School, but the

recurring themes are the following: grades, teaching strategies, time, exposure,

and neutral.

Conclusions

Based on the results, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. The students who are taking Korean as an elective Subject in Senior High

School have positive and negative perceptions. They have a positive

perception because of its advantages namely, learning a new culture and

tradition, interacting with foreigners, keeping up with the trend in Kdrama

and K-pop culture, and business dealings with other countries in line with

their chosen careers. It is also not difficult to learn, given that the teacher

provides necessary activities, handouts, songs, and illustrations to better

understand the characters or alphabet. In contrast, some students have a

negative perception because of its disadvantages namely, impracticality,

irrelevance to their chosen strand and careers, and conflict with the major

subjects. It is also difficult to learn, especially since there are new sets of

characters which are different compared to the usual alphabet and have

longer sentence structures.

2. The factors that influence the students’ perceptions towards the said subject

are entertainment, interest, tourism, teaching strategies, and work. The

students’ perceptions are influenced by the trend in the entertainment

industry. They enjoy the subject more especially when it comes to watching

Kdrama and listening to K-pop. When students are interested and feel

motivated to learn Korean, most likely, they will perform well in class and

have a positive perception. In contrast, students who are not interested tend

to view Korean only as a requirement in school and have a negative

perception. The students, who travel to Korea, communicate with the

people, and engage with their culture, tend to have a positive perception.

The students become more interested in learning Korean when the teacher

utilizes good strategies, modules, and pedagogy, which allow them to

participate actively in class. The students find Korean as an elective subject

useless, unless they travel to Korea and work there.

3. Teaching Korean as an elective subject in Senior High School can be

improved in terms of grades, teaching strategies, time, and exposure. The

students suggest that Korean as an elective subject should not be graded

and have no unit tests. However, if it will be graded, Korean should be

included in the general average for the semester to further motivate the

students to make an effort in the said subject. The teacher should also

improve his or her teaching strategies particularly in adjusting his or her

pace to the students, practicing a few more exercises before taking the test,

and establishing connection in class. The students prefer to have longer

time duration or subject periods in a week in learning Korean in order to

increase their knowledge and not limit themselves from learning only the

basics. Likewise, the students want a better time slot in which they can

actively participate and are in the mood to listen. The students would like to

have more exposure to the culture and tradition of Korea. This may include

bringing Korean products, immersing in a similar setting with that of Korea,

and engaging with more activities in which they can integrate their

knowledge and understanding in Korean. There are also students who do

not have any suggestions to improve it and prefer to remove Korean as an

elective subject in Senior High School.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusions gathered, the following are recommended:

1. The teachers should take into consideration that the elective subjects

should be aligned with their chosen courses.

2. The future researchers should try to determine other factors which may

affect the learning of a foreign language other than Korean.

3. The teachers should integrate different teaching strategies in order for the

students to learn more efficiently. At the same time, the students should

have their own way of learning a foreign language that will help them in

their learning experience. This will improve the student-teacher

relationships as well as provide quality education.

4. The future researchers should also conduct a study about the perception of

students towards other elective subjects.

seonsaengmim , she makes it enjoyable every class and may ara gid siya like

daw song for every lesson. Tapos even though hindi Korean class gina kanta

man giyapon so ma ingrained gid simo nga mind ang.. ang ginatudlo ya sa

Korean, and may ara man siya handouts and easy.. easy to learn man gid kung

siya ang teacher.

(70) Respondent 4: Uhm.. yes it is easy to learn not only that we can understand

all the symbols, the characters, and the letters uhm.. the.. ah.. the.. symbols that

symbolize each letter but you can surely uhm.. memorize it all, in just a few days’

time.

already had a background of it. And because I, you know I find it fun learning a

new language, that’s why I place my heart with it. Chos! And yeah I have an

interest in it, that’s why I find it fun. And plus the teacher was really helpful and..

giving us activities that were really easy and fun to do man.

asta maka learn na gid kami. And may ara siya sang mga strategies like mga

kanta para maka learn kami. And.. ano pagid gani ah? Like mga videos gid nga

kanta ang mga pang hambal hambal. And mga sulat sulat.. it’s like may ara siya

trick or strategies para dasig ka ma learn kag ma continue na.

dugang lang siya sa dapat niyo tulun’an and uhm…tbh, daw hindi man ma use

ang Korean sa Assumption since diba French di ang ano so, suggest ko French

nalang ang tudluon.

give sa students because gapa sabad sabad lang siya sa utok sa mga

estudyante especially nga dapat in this uhmm sa muni na grade level, grade 12,

dapat specialized na tanan tanan sa ila gid strand mismo and if eh give gid man

ni as a subject, I would suggest uhmm this to be given sa lower grade levels nga

kung diin na tanan na subjects is uhm generalized and like daw ma ano gid sya

sang tanan kay if this is uhmm given together with the other specialized subjects

it would cause uhm…uhm dw magcause siya sang gamo pa kay like there’s a lot

of school works pa nga gina pa give samun and yeah daw ka garot lang so

suggestion, my point is e give siya sa lower grade level.

practicality kag ang kung maging realistic ka, I mean it’s fun kag sa teacher fun

siya but indi siya need gid namon as a grade 12 student and if ever like kung

may subject man gid it’s nami tani kung elective lang siya or if they have a choice

if they want to take Korean or not kay for some, they enjoy it while for others,

they do not enjoy it. So kung may subject man gid, kung willing lang gid sila ya

kay dapat ang subject na na for Grade 12 dapat ang ma use gid nila bala as

Grade 12 or Senior High School is a preparation for college.

utmost priority as students and I think uhm Korean isn’t necessarily needed

sa isa ka sem, and sa isa na ka sem ang gina tun’an niyo tanan basic pana, and

hindi niyo man na tanan…hindi man ninyo magamit ang mga basic nga na nga

gina tun’an sa Korean sa college so for me waste of time lang siya ang Korean

uh yes, waste of time kay pwede man ka gamit or ka offer ang Assumption other

subjects nga mas mapuslan namon sa college like for example biskan law na

lang tani or Philippine constitution so yeah, actually mapuslan ang Philippine

constitution kay magamit mo na siya asta magcollege ka biskan hindi siya related

sa imo pero kung sa life, magamit mo na siya. So yeah for me, useless ang

Korean.

subject tani lain na lang nga language like Chinese, pwede mo ma use sa

negosyo kag diba allied country man sang Philippines ang China, so yeah, that’s

all.

(37) Respondent 3: No also, kay amo to hambal ni respondent number 1 wala

man, hindi man included sa general average and yeah amo lng na. Tapos te

kung taas man grade inyo sa Korean, indi mo siya madala sa general average

tapos hindi mn siya necessary gid kay anhon mo na ang Korean subject? Amo

lng na.

(41) Respondent 4: Yeah, umm no kay like others said, hindi siya dala sa general

average so what’s the point? Dason like gamay lang maka-enjoy gd, like mga

Kpop fans dason hindi man tanan maka-enjoy sa amon class. Okay man siya

kay hapos pero daw hindi mo gd siya magamit like for everyday use unlike

Spanish, magamit mo gid siya kag kung Korean, oo kabalo ka magbasa pero

problema mainchindihan mo? Muna. Thank you.

(45) Respondent 5: No, wala ko labot sa general average pero I think like an

elective especially sa 12th grade should be something I could use gid ya ya right

after I graduate. Nga, you know medyo useful gd siya ya sa akon either in

college or sa workplace in the future. Tapos uhh I just think nga after like 1 sem?

Sem gid man? After 1 sem of Korean I didn’t learn anything, I can’t speak Korean

man gyapon so like what’s the use? I wasted one sem, magtuon-tuon tapos wala

man gali.

(53) Respondent 7: No, kay hambal gani nila hindi man dala sa general average

and tani kung magpili sila subject ang foreign language nga subject, tani ang

magamit mo man adlaw adlaw like mga Spanish tani gin continue nalang, Latin,

mga muna muna, and Korean, wala gid ya may nabulig sa kabuhi ko.

time, the time of students and like.. hindi lang pag e mention diba? There.. there..

there.. like what respondent number 4 said, there are still other language that are

more useful and not everyone will benefit from learning Korean.

b. Why is it difficult to learn?

(6) Respondent 2: Uhm it somehow difficult to learn but uhm there’s a plus side

to it uhm it’s also fun learning it uhm what makes it difficult is the fact uhm the

symbols the letters are very much new to us uhmm compared to the usual

alphabet we encounter so yeah that’s what makes it difficult.

(46) Respondent 5: Personally, nabudlayan ko ya maglearn sang new nga

lanaguages especially kay you have to learn a new set of characters and then sa

first try mo pa lang dason lawiglawig laba laba bala ang korean sentence daw ma

medyo ma intimidate sa mga circles kag sa mga lines so it’s hard especially for

me kay hindi ko ka personally hindi ko ka ah ano na maghimo connection bala

ang ini nga symbol amo ni nga sound like it takes me awhile so that’s my

difficulty, yeah.

B. FACTORS

2. What are some components which influence your perception in learning

Korean?

(3) Respondent 1: I said no since, personally wala ko man siya na gamit kag

kung magwatch ko Kdrama, ga use man ko gyapon subtitles.

(7) Respondent 2: Ako simple lang sabat ko, I simply not… I’m simply not

interested in Korean.

(11) Respondent 3: I’m the only one who said yes, but for me the components

that influenced me…uhmm wait okay, so I will state some things that uhm

influenced my perception in learning Korean. Actually, when uhm at the start

when we learned Korean, uhm I found it fun and very helpful in understanding

the language more because yes uhm it is used in both tourism and

entertainment. So tourism, because we travel there diba and we also come back

here and Koreans also come here so somehow we also communicate with them.

And entertainment, because of in terms of Kdrama and movies that’s all.

(15) Respondent 4: I said no na eh consider ang Korean as a Grade 12 subject

but personally man, I enjoyed it with the teacher with her strategy kag ang

modules ya man kag plus I also watch Kdrama or mga Korean variety shows.

(19) Respondent 5: As what as I have said uhm mas kailangan namun mag

focus sa major subjects namon since Korean hindi mo gid na siya ma gamit mag

college ka especially na mag work ka na unless na mag go ka sa Korea te but

yeah.

(23) Respondent 6: I said no as Korean being a specialized subject in uhh Grade

12, but I personally enjoy the subject because I watch Kdrama as simple as that

hehe.

(27) Respondent 7: Siguro…ano man…kabudlay ano nag-influence sa akon…I

think nag no ko kay hindi siya practical as a subject nga eh tudlo sa senior high

kay I think mas kailangan…mas damo sang subjects nga kailangan namon

before kami magtapak sa college and ang Korean hindi siya namon makita as

one of those subjects.

(31) Respondent 1: Personal interest, because since the beginning of the world

hahaha before pa lang daan ya ga ano na ko ya sa Kpop culture that’s why I

enjoyed the subject.

(35) Respondent 2: Hmmm wala because it’s required so you have no choice but

to pass the subject. Pero after ano sang actually at first sang na learn ko na

Korean ang subject daw na ano ko nga haaa ano ni pulos ya kay like ang ma

benefit lang feeling ko ang mga amo na e, mga hilig sa Kpop mga Kdrama mo

na. Pero eventually I learned to like somehow to like the subject and enjoy it kay

tungod uhh the teacher also finds ways for us to be able to participate sa class

and also engage ourselves in the activities.

(39) Respondent 3: Ako wala man because need gid man ahh need gid man siya

nga like e take tapos amo lng na e kay nami ang way of teaching ni

seonsaengnim like kis’a gina oo like gina pa repeat ya sa amon, pa repeat para

like ma gets gid amon like everything nami iya nga pedagogy.

(43) Respondent 4: Uhmm ang factors ang culture nila especially kay daw gusto

ko gid maglearn new cultures especially kung makadto ka sa ina na place at

least may na tun’an ka dason amo na Kpop fan biskan late nako nagsugod so at

least damo man ko may na tun’an other than sa mga songs and other words nga

ma came across ko sa internet.

(47) Respondent 5: Exposure sa friends who consume Kpop pero other than

that, I don’t like Korean sorry hahaha amo lng na.

(51) Respondent 6: Kpop na lang akon and Kdrama. That’s it.

(55) Respondent 7: Amo na lang like what respondent number 2 said, wala kami

ubra required siya so need mo lang e pass and may times man nga sadya kung

ga learn kami new things pero kung may quiz quiz kag ga recite sa tubang indi

gid siya ya sadya. Amen.

(59) Respondent 1: Amo na… nami mag tudlo si Miss Kim kay hapos iya lesson

and then, uhmm its the trend amo na gani subong uhmm may ara Kpop, may ara

mga Kdrama and then amo na uhmm may mga words na always ga go around

and you find it interesting na e learn man and at the same time may ara man

daan uhmm uhmm Korean translations for comic books when you read so if may

ara ka background daw ma read mo na siya even uhmm mga short uhmm

sentences lang and then amo na hapos mo lang maintindihan.

(63) Respondent 2: Na enjoy ko man Korean because of…uhmm… nami mag

klase si Miss Kim and at the same time and anywhere sa social media may

makita ka gid about sa Kpop na post but at the same time biskan hindi ko gid at

first hilig ang Korean na subject but, pero siyempre kailangan mo pasaron ang

subject para maka pass ka sa subject na Korean.

(67) Respondent 3: So uhmm ang nag-influence pa gid sa akon na ma learn

Korean is my friends kay they’re all into Kpop and Kdrama so by learning Korean

at least makarelate ko even sa language lang and sa pagteach ni seonsaengnim,

daw damo ka man may ma learn about Korean at least nakasabay ko sa akon

mga friends.

(71) Respondent 4: For me, the component… ano to? That influenced me to

learn Korean is that maybe one day that I’ll be able to uhmm travel to Korea and

will be able to communicate with the people there and learn their culture,

tradition, and so much more.

(75) Respondent 5: So, I have a bit of a negative perception in learning Korean

because I understand that in order for you to learn a new language you have to

do a lot of writing and do a lot of activities. I personally, don’t like doing a lot of

writing and don’t like doing a lot of activities and it’s very time consuming and you

have to put your effort into it, into understanding it.

(79) Respondent 6: Ang akon… it’s because it’s the trend so since it’s the trend,

te siyempre makisabay ka man eh kag you get interested and then daw na dala

ka man…huo aside from it’s part of the curriculum and I have to finish it… If not, I

don’t get good result hahaha uhmm pero amo na I think it’s really the trend nga

nagkagusto gid ko ya nga sige I’ll do it. Amo na.

(83) Respondent 7: This past year or generation, like grabe gid pag boom sang

Kpop na nag like mga kanta muna daw nag-influence samon nga ma gustohan

man namon and then hindi lang amo na kay gusto mismo namon maglearn man

sang language nila in order to communicate with them and adapt man ang

culture nila amo na nga ga aware man mga dba Kpop nga iban …(ano tawag sa

mga bata?) Kpoper and then… ano pagid nagpush sakon man? Kag siyempre

part gid na sang amon na curriculum te taposon gid na siya namon.

3. What alternative strategies should be made to improve Korean as an elective

subject in Senior High School?

(4) Respondent 1: For me, I agree with respondent 3 that we won’t be graded

with this subject or there would be no unit tests.

(8) Respondent 2: There’s nothing to be improved. Thanks.

(12) Respondent 3: To improve its teaching? Uhm for me, if it is the same

teacher all she have to do is uhm improve her pacing in the sense that

sometimes uhm her teaching is that after she teaches one lesson and we

practice a few times uhm sometimes, she also starts a test and some of us are

still not familiar with it especially because we only have Korean twice a week so

we lack more practice that we need before we take the test and sometimes uhm

when she also makes her tests, there are some uhm items that were not quite

familiar with so it’s better that she teaches what is going to come out in the test.

And more food!

(16) Respondent 4: Okay uhm for Korean to be improved for next year, honestly,

I’m really okay as long as it’s the same teacher cause I really had fun with

seonsaengnim then as long as ang module ya kag ang pacing ya actually okay

lang sakon basta ano lang make it as a subject na uhm with choice of the student

if they want to attend that class or not para hindi na sila ma forced na gid bala

kay may iban na daw na pilitan lang and yeah like what they said there could be

like test to just check if musta ila na pag understanding and all but it’s not graded.

(20) Respondent 5: Wala ko kabalo kung paano na eh improve kay nahambal na

naman nila tanan ang tanan nga possible na ma ubra. Kakson ang Korean!

(24) Respondent 6: So as another respondent has said uhm that we should not

be graded in Korean, but if they have to grade us uhm I suggest that it wouldn’t

affect our uhm average for the semester.

(28) Respondent 7: So for me, uhm ang kailangan eh improve ang time yeah ang

time kay useless man gyapon nga eh tudlo ni seonsaengnim kag kung sino man

na sa nga teacher...Hahaha indi ah, add lang time kay daw useless lang na

matun’an namon ang basic lang nga dira lang kami asta sa basic nga daw wala

may nag improve gyapon nga wala man may nag dugang sa learning namun

asta lang kami gyapon sa basic and hindi siya namon gyapon magamit bisan sa

ano lang…uhm bisan sa simple na conversation bi hindi siya gyapon namon

magamit kay basic lang siya katama…letters lang amon na bal’an alangan ma

isturya kami nga aya oyo lang diba so yeah improve ang time and himuon siya bi

thrice a week or 4 times a week.

(36) Respondent 2: Yeah, same…more exposure like mas nami guro kung maka

ano siya like mas ma expose ang students sa like kung may kadtuan bi na place

daw Korea amo na like ma motivate ang mga students and big factor man ang

fact nga wala siya na include sa average grades sang students so wala

motivation ang students nga mag-effort gid sa Korean na subject.

(40) Respondent 3: Ang like build establish ka like connection like sa students

mo kung ano bi gusto nila like anything Korean pero gina ubra man na ni

seonsaengnim pero kulang yeah kulang to guro.

(44) Respondent 4: Uhm before nila like anay kwaon na siya sa general average

dapat like gin observe na anay nila ang Korean in class kung okay man

ang…ang like daw progress or kung ano gakatabo sa klase kay like kanugon

man nga Korean na gid, amo pa na ang hindi mo na hindi mo mapasaran.

Tam’an gid siya kahapos, hindi pa dala sa general average and makabulig gid na

siya kay dako. Kung kung ano ka kung like motivated ka man or hindi at least

biskan amo na nga subject e anhan mo kay bu…hapos and nakabulig siya sa

grades kag makapabutong sa imo especially.

(48) Respondent 5: Kung ako ma bring back sa general average cuz it’s actually

one hour sa imo nga school day awat pa na nga makaubra ka sang iban nga

bagay and with the way that seonsaengnim is teaching it, daw I think pwede na

man nga ibalik sa general average kay daw mga talag’as naman ang grades

sang you know na population if ever may Korean man gyapon next year yeah.

(52) Respondent 6: Exposure kag dal’on tani ang Korean sa general average kay

dako gid ya mabulig especially kung ga lapaw na bala ang imo nga grades kay

makabulig gid na butong pataas.

(56) Respondent 7: Same man like tani e butang sa general average kay laban

sa amon ang pinakataas Korean so kanugon man nga hindi siya madala sa

general average and daw kung baga, waste ka lang one hour everyday kung

hindi man lang pagdal’on. I mean okay may extra learning pero, still kung baga

wala indi ka man motivate na mag mag tuon mayo sa Korean kay bal’an mo nga

hindi siya madala sa general average daw naglabay lang ang subject.

(60) Respondent 1: Ano uhm…more time man kay siyempre kulang gid siya ya

and then uhm activities wherein we can integrate what we have learn sa Korean

class and uhm continue lang bala sa mga songs and other na mga uhm other

strategies guro related to that na mas easier bala para sa isa ka student

maglearn Korean.

(64) Respondent 2: Uhm…for me, same as them more activities kag more time

kay notice ko medyo limited man ang time para sa Korean na subject so feeling

ko kung mas lawig ang time to namon, mas damo pa gid kami siguro may ma

learn kag ma enhance sa pag learn Korean.

(68) Respondent 3: Kung sakon, time as well kay like sa time sa may event sa

CSC like na kulangan gid to time magprepare so amo to law’ay mga saot kag

hindi gid prepared ang mga ga tudlo sang mga kung ano ano to so kulang gid sa

time, preparation and kung tani, like madamo ang periods per week kay sang

Korean na subject twice a week lang kami ga meet and kis’a wala pa kami ga

meet so amo lang na, padamuon lang ang periods.

(72) Respondent 4: And another alternative is that uhm the Korean teachers uhm

should uhm ano na? Bring more products or more exposures to the students so

that they might learn something from it man.

(76) Respondent 5: For me in order to improve… ano gani ah? … For me, in

order to improve Korean as a subject in Senior High School uh we should

transfer the time slot of the Korean subject to somewhere before lunch because

our Korean subject is usually the first period in the morning and most of us are

still sleepy and are not in a mood to learn.

(80) Respondent 6: Ako para sakon time lang gid ang kulang namon ang daw we

enjoyed it pero I guess we…much more pa gid guro mas ma enjoy kung damo

damo pa gid time tapos we had a lot more things to do about it…amo na. Kag

maka hatag pa gid kami guro more quality output kung may time pa gid ta… amo

lang na.

(84) Respondent 7: Expand siguro ang time and more activites kay para…kay

once ma like parehos to sa mga newspaper gina pa lantaw kami sang mga

Korean words…na ano gani translate into English? Kay if once na ikaw mismo,

kamo mismo makadiscover kung ano na mga words gina ano niyo, ma learn

kamo and more activites lang siguro kag more illustration kag tudluan ya pa gid

kami more na kanta na ma mas padasig amon paglearn sang mga characters

kay tuod may characters characters na magsulat kag maglearn.
