1 Introduction

1.1 What is PortSIP Softphone

PortSIP’s next generation telephony clicent, PortSIP softphone 3.0 lets you interate your
telephony experience with your desktop mobile computer solutions. With the click of a button
or the tap on the keyboard you can dial, answer, or choose how your want to personally
manage your calls and availability. And whether your prefer wired or wireless, PortSIP
softphone lets you use a multitude of headset devices to maximize your telephony experience,
rather than being restricted by a traditional telephone receiver.

Designed to work over internet-based phone systems, PortSIP softphone provides Voice Over
Internet Protocol(VoIP) solutions using an internet-based telephony server within your
company.s local area network and/or over your local internet VoIP service provider.

2 Installation and Setup

2.1 Getting Ready

Obtaining Information from your Service Provider


After choosing a VoIP service provider, you will need information regarding specific account
information to populate PortSIP softphone settings:
z User Name
z Auth Name(Authorization Name, usually this was empty or same as User Name)
z Password
z Proxy server address and port
z Domain *
z STUN server address *
z Outbound proxy server *

*value not used by all VoIP service providers

System Requirements

Audio Only:
Processor: Intel Pentium III 500 MHz or equivalent, recommended PIII 1.0 GHz or equivalent
Memory: 128 MB RAM, recommended 128 MB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 10 MB, recommened 20 MB
Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003
Connection: IP network connection(broadband, LAN, wireless)
Sound Card: Full-duplex, 16 bit

All Features:

Multimedia Device Requirements


PortSIP softphoen requires both speakers and a microphone to make calls. Any of the
following configurations are acceptable:
External speakers and microphone
Built-in speakers and microphone
Dual-jack multimedia headset
Bluetooth multimedia headset
USB multimedia heardset
USB phone

Video Cameras
Calls made with PortSIP softphone will work without a video camera, but one is necessary to
allow other parties to see your image. PortSIP softphone will work with most USB video
cameras.

2.2 Installing PortSIP Softphone


1. Download PortSIP softphone at http://www.portsip.com
2: Extract it, run the PortSIP softphone setup executable file and follow the prompts in the
install wizard

Uninstalling PortSIP Softphone


Uninstall PortSIP softphone as you would uninstall any other program from the start menu of
Windows, or launch the Windows Control Pannel, and select “Add or Remove Programs”,
Follow the prompts.

2.3 Configuring PortSIP Softphone


1. Start PortSIP softphone as you would any other program: Use the Windows Start menu or
double-click the desktop icon. The softphone appears.
2. When the login windows was appears, enter your account information:

1: The Auth Name usually was empty or same as the User Name.
2: You can click the “Advanced” button to setting the user domain, etc.
“Register every: the time interval between PortSIP softphoen attempts to reregister in order
to refresh the account registration with the VoIP service provider for this account. A value of
zero means not to reregister after the initial registration. This value placed in the “Expires”
header field of the REGISTER message. The default setting is 90, usually you not need to
modify it.
3: STUN Server: you can enter the STUN server likes: stun.portsip.com

Click the “Login” button to login to the Proxy server.

3 Using PortSIP Softphone

3.1 Starting PortSIP Softphone


1. Start PortSIP softphone as you would any others program: Use the Windows Start menu or
double-click the desktop icon. The softphone appears.

2. Enter your account information and click the “login” button

When you are logged in, the softphone shows your User Name and “Logged in”

If you click the or to minimize the softphone, you will still be able to receive calls.

Close the PortSIP Softphone


If you want to close the PortSIP softphone, then you can click the “File” menu and choose
“Exit” or right-click the softphone to choose “Exit”.

3.2 Placeing a Call


You can contact someone using by a number(SIP number or a traditional phone number – if
supported by your VoIP service provider.

1. Enter the SIP number or phone number using the softphone keypad or the computer
keyboard.

2. Click the or press “Enter”

You will hear a ringing tone while PortSIP softphone attempts to make a connection.

Ending a Call

Click on the Call established or Call incoming.

3.3 Answering a Call


PortSIP must be running to answer incoming calls.
PortSIP softphone rings and the line of the incoming call is lit, and the softphone comes to the
front of the screen.

You can answer the call in this way: Click on the PortSIP softphone.

You can ignore the call in this way: Click when the call was incoming.

3.4 Handling a Call

While the Call Is in Progress

Video

Click to pop the video window, after your image was appears in the bottom panel, you
will see the other party in the top video panel if they have enabled video at their end.
You can click “Sending Video Steam” checkbox, then other party will see your image.
Click again to stop sending video stream.

Adjusting Volume And muting


Use the microphone slider to adjust the volume of your voice for your listeners.
Use the speaker slider to adjust the sound you are hearing.

Mute
Click on the dial pad to prevent the other party from hearing you. Click again to unmute.

Call Record

Click at any time during the call. Click again to stop recording. Recordings

are save as WAV files(for audio) files. You can click “File” menu and choose “View Audio
Record Files” to play the record files.

Placing a Call on Hod


Click “Hold” button, to resume a call that is on hold, click the “Hold” again.

AA – Auto Answer
Click “Auto Answer” on the dialpad to automatically answer calls as the come in.
Click “Auto Answer” again to disable the Auto Answer feature option

DND – Do Not Distourb


Click “Do Not Disturb” on the dialpad. All incoming calls will be reject.

3.4 3rd party Conference Calls


You can host a conference by calling the other parties involved, or by allowing them to
arrange the call themselves.

Start a 3rd party Conference Call


To host a conference between other callers:
Example 1: when you on the call with friend A on the line 1, you want to invite friend B join
your conversation, then you can click “Line 2”(the softphone will placing line 1 on hold
automatically). Or click “Hold” first, then click “Line 2”. On the line 2, enter the number of
friend B and call him, when the call was established with friend B, you can click “Conference”
to start the conference.

Example 2: when you on the call with friend A on the line1, the incoming call of friend B on
the line 2, you can click “Hold” to hold line 1 and click “Line 2” to switch to line2, or click “Line
2” directly(the softphone will hold line 1 automatically). After you answered friend B on the
line 2, you can click “conference” to start the conference.

When you hos a conference between others, you can click “conference” again to stop
conference, after stop the conference, all lines will put on hold.

Start a video call

1: Run the PortSIP softphone.


2: Click “Options” menu and choose “Codecs settings” item.
3: Make sure the “H263 CODEC” was in the “Enabled codecs” of “Video Codecs Preferences”
and click “Ok” button to save it.
4: Click the “VIDEO” button to pop the vidwo window.
5: Make the call
6:After the call was established, then click the “Sending video stream”
