Macaso, Kimberly V.

A. Look from the newspaper or the Internet an article that tackles an ethical
issue. Consider the following questions: Write in paragraph form. 20 pts.

1. What makes this a matter of Ethics?

2. What is your own ethical judgment on the case?
3. What are your reasons for the judgment?

Ethical dilemmas due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the terrible pandemic
that has affected the world's population, ICUs have seen an unprecedented
flood of patients, which has raised ethical questions about judgments about
triage and withdrawal of life support as well as family visits and the standard
of end-of-life care. These components have the potential to sway our ethical
beliefs, accentuate our ethical conundrums, and create scenarios where
significant caregiver distress results. There have been suggestions to justify
triage procedures along with ethical grounds. Whatever the viewpoint, an
imbalance between utilitarian and individual ethics results in uncomfortable
situations that caregivers will have to deal with. With this in mind, we sought
to highlight several important ethical decisions and limitations faced by ICU
caregivers during the Covid-19 pandemic. Without departing from standard
procedures, the structured methods integrating the pertinent tools of ethical
reflection were shared, leaving intensivists to make the final decision.

My own ethical judgment in this case is that, the most important details in this
text are the risks associated with quickly setting up new ICUs during a
pandemic. This option has been associated with reduced quality of care due
to the difficulties in meeting nationwide standards for critical care facilities.
Additionally, volunteer HCWs recruited to work in ICUs may not be adequately
trained for specific and sophisticated ICU work, leading to the use of
inappropriate devices for the complex care of severe ARDS patients.
Additionally, this type of organization may imply distributive inequality, with
access to ICU facilities of heterogeneous efficiency and a selection criterion
close to first come—first served.

My reason for my judgment is that we need to our best in helping the sick.
B. Based on what you have learned so far, how will you decide when you are
faced with a dilemma? Cite a specific scenario either personal, organizational
or structural to illustrate how you will decide in a morally conflicting situations.

When I faced a personal dilemma, I deal it with my good morals. I am not

perfect, but I always do my best in making my decisions in life.
