EXAMINATION: SEMESTER TEST 2 PROGRAMME: BSc

MODULE CODE: NPHY 512 DURATION: 3 Hrs

MODULE DESCRIPTION: Electromagnetism MARKS: 58

EXAMINER(S): Mr. M.D Buthelezi DATE: 08 October

2022

MODERATOR(S): Dr Z Mtumela (Internal) TIME: 10:00

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Answer ALL questions.

2. Show all your calculations.
3. Do NOT separate sub-questions.
4. The use of non-programmable calculator is permitted.
1. Suppose that you a chief scientist at Samsung, you are given a task to develop a
presentation that explains the physics behind wireless charging.

Comment on the number of coils that must be inside the charging pad and the cell phone,
given that the wall socket produces 240V. Explain the principle of transmitting current
wirelessly from the charging pad to the phone. [6]
(Wireless charging works by connecting the pad to the wall socket then the cell phone is
placed on top of the pad and begins to charge, without being connected to the pad with a
wire)

2. In the circuit in figure 1 the capacitors are initially uncharged, the battery has no internal
resistance, and the ammeter is idealized. Find the ammeter reading
[7]
(a) just after the switch S is closed (4)
(b) after S has been closed for a very long time. (3)

Figure 1: RC circuit

3. In an L-R-C series circuit, L = 0.280 H and C =4.00 𝜇F. The voltage amplitude of the
source is 120 V.
[7]
(a) What is the resonance frequency of the circuit? (2)
(b) When the source operates at the resonance angular frequency, the current
amplitude in the circuit is 1.70 A. What is the resistance R of the resistor? (2)
(c) At the resonance angular frequency, what are the peak voltages across the inductor,
the capacitor, and the resistor? (3)

4.A galvanometer (Voltmeter) has a full-scale reading of 100 μA and a coil resistance of Rc =
50.0 Ohms.
[6]
Determine the resistance that must be connected
(a) in series with the coil to produce a voltmeter that will register a full-scale reading
of 0.500V. (3)
(b) in parallel with the coil to produce an ammeter that will register a full-scale reading of
60.0mA. (3)

5. In the circuit shown in figure 2, switch S1 has been closed for a long enough time so that
the current reads a steady 3.50 A. Suddenly, switch S2 is closed and S1 is opened at the same
instant.

(a) What is the maximum charge that the capacitor will receive? [3]
(b) What is the current in the inductor at this time? [2]

Figure 2: LRC circuit

6. A charge of 12 μC, travelling with a speed of 9.0 × 106 ms−1 in a direction perpendicular
to a magnetic field, experiences a magnetic force of 8.7 × 10−3 N. Calculate the
magnitude of the field. [3]
7. In figure 3, R =14.0 Ω, C= 6.20 𝜇F, and L = 54.0mH, and the ideal battery has emf = 34.0
V. The switch is kept at a for a long time and then thrown to position b. What are the (a)
frequency and [2]
(b) current amplitude of the resulting oscillations? [3]

8. A wire 1.0m long carries a current of 10A and makes an angle of 30° with a uniform
magnetic field with B = 1.5T. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the force on
the wire. [4]

9. Prove that the magnetic force on a straight wire carrying current I in a uniform magnetic
field, B, is

𝐹⃗ = 𝐼𝐿
⃗⃗ x𝐵
⃗⃗ [5]

10. An electromagnet produces a magnetic field of 0.550 T in a cylindrical region of radius

2.50 cm between its poles. A straight wire carrying a current of 10.8 A passes through the
center of this region and is perpendicular to both the axis of the cylindrical region and the
magnetic field. What magnitude of force does this field exert on the wire?
[5]

11. A circular loop of wire is in a region of spatially uniform magnetic field, as shown in
figure 4. The magnetic field is directed into the plane of the figure. Determine the
direction (clockwise or counter clockwise) of the induced current in the loop when
[5]
(a) B is increasing;
(1)
(b) B is decreasing;
(2)
(c) B is constant with value B0. Explain your reasoning.

12. In a physics laboratory experiment, a coil with 200 turns enclosing an area of 12 cm2 is
rotated in 0.040 s from a position where its plane is perpendicular to the earth’s magnetic
field to a position where its plane is parallel to the field. The earth’s magnetic field at the lab
location is 6.0x10-5 T.
(a) What is the total magnetic flux through the coil before it is rotated? After it is
rotated? [3]

(b) What is the average emf induced in the coil? [2]
