Capstone Project Proposal

Name of student: Srishti Mishra Date: May 21, 2023

Teacher: Ms. Browne Block: B

The Capstone strand I have chosen is Project Strand

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one clear
sentence):

Magic Is a Funny Thing || Undertale AU x Reader

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry questions:

What makes writing worth reading, and why should we do it?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you
are choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry
connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I read books, especially fanfiction, for the emotions readers will feel. Either it's angst, fluff
(hugs, hand holding, affirmations), or a character that makes you dislike them a lot. Whatever
it is, I enjoy it when an author succeeds in making us readers feel emotions from a work of
fiction, because that tells a lot of the human mind; to be moved by characters and situations
that aren't real. That's what I want to achieve with this novel as the game it's based on is very
popular, as well as there not being a lot of this kind of plot. I want to give my audience
something new to read, so they would feel more inspired in writing their own fanfiction when
it comes to it. I enjoy writing because it's an easy way to bring out my thoughts and feelings
and lay them out on paper. To be able to share my ideas with others is really a dream. I want to
make my audience smile, laugh, feel emotions. That's why I want to explore this topic.
Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this
area of inquiry?

I know how to write fanfiction as I have gained knowledge and insight by simply reading other
works. But I know that just reading isn't enough evidence, so I did my own research and found
a trustworthy source to give me tips on how to write fanfiction, most of which I'm already
doing.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does
this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

My intended career is aiming to be an author. This topic is directly related to my passion and
career, even though I won’t really become an author in the future, doing what I love right now
through a project is enough, as well as continuing my story whenever I want in the future.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core competencies
will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.(Must include reference
to ALL 6 Core competencies).

Creative Thinking:
“I can use the environment around me, including others, and my unconscious mind to
generate new ideas.”
I can use the knowledge I’ve gained from the fanfictions I’ve read that are similar to my story
idea and the knowledge I’ve gained from playing Undertale as well.
"I can persevere and understand that failure can be productive."
I understand that if I don't get an audience, at least I was able to write something new than
what I normally write.

Communication:
“Connect and engage with others.”
I can use my ability to write to connect with other likeminded people who enjoy reading stuff
like my story.

Critical Thinking:
"I can explore and create new ways to represent my learning around a variety of
problems, events, issues, and needs."
I can look to other creations of fanfiction for inspiration, or I can ask other authors for advice
on how they begin each chapter, what helps them write, and what helps them continue. I can
learn from my mistakes in the story and edit to my best.
“I understand the purpose for my work and consider my audience.”
I understand that writing a fanfiction based on Undertale will provide my audience something
(somewhat) new to read, and that excites me, because yeah, there’s loads of different
fanfictions out there, but many of them begin with similar events. Here’s an example: Stuck
With You & Trapped – both of these fics begin with skeletons popping into existence in the
Reader’s home. Here’s one more example: There's Still Magic & Six Skeletons and The
Waitress – both of these fics have the plot of the Reader’s “friend” inviting the Reader to live
with them, alongside other skeletons that they are somehow dating.
I consider the fact that my audience is made up of Undertale lovers, people who want to read
something new, or people who just want inspiration and I’m happy to just provide this story to
others who are interested in this genre.

Personal & Cultural Identity:

“I understand what is important to me.”
Writing is very important to me, and I enjoy entertaining others through my writing as well as
receiving feedback and advice in the comments.

Subjects that affect my topic are:

Creative Writing – I'm writing a story which needs creativity and imagination and maybe
inspiration if I ever get stuck, even though I read loads of fanfiction and get inspiration
everywhere.

English - I guess this is just self-explanatory.

Socials – Undertale is based somewhere in America so I still have to do a little research and
imagine how 2050 would look in the US, and I would look at the situation realistically if
monsters really did exist and would come to the surface world. Of course, there wouldn’t be
military instantly, just sightings, news around the world, and president to ‘former’ king talk.

Technology – I’m using my mobile or a laptop/pc to access Quotev to type up story chapters.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to present
your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once completed. You
may use a combination of mediums.

o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT

o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation
o YouTube channel
I am going to use a website called Quotev, which house surveys, quizzes, stories of all kinds,
and screenshot bits of my story, maybe any encouraging comments or messages, and present
these through a presentation.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will
you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end of
this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your proposal.

I am going to be continuing a year or so long fanfiction I started on my own because of my

sudden interest in speculative fiction, so I decided to start a dystopian type of fanfiction based
on Undertale, a game where you can make as many theories as you like and still make it
make sense. My fanfiction is inspired by another work-in-progress story called, Division. The
plot for the inspiration and mine is the same, but mine has Sans fixing the machine to send the
copies back of whom we meet in the beginning, while Division’s Sans is fixing the machine to
send the copies back, but we do not know which copies until further in the story. Obviously, I
will not be going and writing the same exact scenario where Division starts off as the Reader
scavenging and then being invited to the hide-out where Sans and the other monsters are. I
already had my story start out with the Reader offering Sans and Papyrus a home to stay at.
While Division’s Sans is caring about the Reader (not affectionate, but trusting), my Sans
dislikes the Reader and wants to seek out evidence that they are not who they say they are. I
want to write Sans in a way that is understandable but also not repetitive with the whole ‘ooo
glowy eye and one arm out throwing the Reader back’ sort of thing. I want Sans to feel
different but also just as familiar. For the Reader, I want to try to give choices for my
audience, to write them in a way that affects my audience. I have read stories where it is not
2nd person but 3rd, yet the author made us, the audience, choose what we wanted the
character to do all while the author themselves would not make that choice and would go with
what the character would choose naturally. Either this choice would spark excitement or
anger, it was all fun and games. That is what I want my story to do. To spark conversations in
others. I want to work on including emotion in this story, mostly angst, fluff, and fear. I have
tried to write Sans’ confrontation with us as intimidating as possible, but now that I read it
over, it seems childish. Hopefully, the next chapter will be an interaction with Red’s brother.
And while the only interactions we have had with him were glares and huffs of disgust, I want
to write him to be the most threatening skeleton in the house. After all, in his AU (alternate
universe), he was feared as part of the Royal Guard. I am going to be adding my own
character in here as the base template for the Reader is just owned by the readers
themselves. The character’s name is Ηγέτης , meaning ‘Leader’ in Greek. I chose this name
because the mask they wear looks like it could be found in Greek mythology. They are going
to be someone the Reader will see as a guide, someone who will appear in their dreams or
out of the corner of their eye, effectively scaring them, but who would not fear a being
appearing taller than you no matter the height you are at? The other characters I will add, as
mentioned in Update 3, are: the Horrortale brothers, of which I will write as Anise/Grey to be
still having aftereffects of the famine (i.e. hand gripping eye socket, scratching the inside of
said socket...), but for Lunar, he will be more of a mediator for his brother and his urges to kill
animals. For the original AU, Undertale, Undyne, Alphys, and Mettaton will be written the
same as they are in the game; while for Toriel and Asgore, they will still be divorced, but have
feelings of forgiveness and want to change for each other. That will be the development for
those two. For the last character I am going to add is the only one from his AU, Mafiafell aka
Mobfell. Dr. Wing Ding Gaster, otherwise known as Wings. He will be another love interest for
the Reader, more competition for the skeletons we know now and for the ones we will meet
later. Wings will be our man to find the cure for the infected. He is the most important
character, besides the Reader. I would say the most important aspect of this story will be the
love interests (romance) and the development of the characters. Characters need to be
developed to keep the story in a flow-like manner.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you will
need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the
resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail your plans.

My resources are to be using a device (mobile or pc/laptop) to access Quotev and continue
typing my chapters out and publish whichever ones sound good. My skills are just being good
at writing, being good at researching (somewhat), and having patience because patience is
virtue.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you need

to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your plan to
access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

Ms. Gill is my mentor for the writing aspect as she is very helpful in that part, and I still have
Ms. Glassco as my mentor for the art aspect of the character sheets. They will help me by
giving me advice on stuff that I might get stuck on, like ideas of how to continue my story or a
new character to add.
Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

Time management and motivation. I do read a lot of fanfictions to get inspiration and I do get
motivation from them, but sometimes that motivation comes with time, and I don't have that
much time. If I do somehow, not finish my goal of getting 5 chapters or more, I will specify
why and how I will overcome that failure.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about your
project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

If the time comes, I may add a co-author to my story for help with any ideas. That's only if I
decide to, other than that, I have no other consideration.

References: Provide reference list of a minimum of 8 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC

enjoy reading. I enjoy reading fanfiction in the 2nd POV because it feels like I’m really
there, especially if the author does a really amazing job with making things realistic and
emotional.

This website will be helpful for me to use when it comes to writing the romance part, still
