Chapter 1

The Problem

Introduction

A management style is a short descriptor summarizing specific behaviours

exhibited by managers. There are hundreds of theoretical models in describing what
makes a good manager or leader, generally based on personality or temperament traits
as directness, empathy, flexibility, and agility. Some management styles are better befit
than others are for certain scenarios and business types.

The Fit Small Business believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ leadership style
when it comes to management. In asking the business leaders and educators to
describe what they think. (Handrick, 2017).

Small organization is a servant mind-set. Understand the needs of the team,

recognize the tensions and stresses of individuals foster their growth, and protect them
from the unnecessary. Those belongs to you. If you walk into the office everyday with
the attitude of you will achieve tremendous things as a team. Nothing is more important
than the team. (Hume, 2017).

For small business owners due to the high number of confusing situations in a
rowing organization where the meaning of a certain events can be needs to
communicate to an employee. Strategic can be assess into a complicated situation then
to communicate an assists employee with having a sense of confusion without any due
to an organization.

In day-to-day operations, we put a lot of trust in the people we have hired to

manage each team, and give them the authority to make their own decisions to lead
their teams. This leadership style is ideal where there is a great deal of trust and when
you have had a chance to hire great people. I have been fortunate to work in that kind of
environment, but if we did not trust, my team or they didn’t me, that would be a major
roadblock. (Shelton, & Minei, 2017).

Small business is that business is developing. You do not know from one month
to the next, what you will be doing in the future, one year from the next, and so it is best
to be very fluid in your management style. (Traveharmon, 2017).

How a given task should be done, rather than just giving orders. By
demonstrating that you are an expert at what you are asking them to do and are there to
help, It will often result in more respects and productivity from your staff. It is impossible
6

to deny that the work ethic of an entrepreneur is contagious; if you work hard for them,
they are more likely to return the favor and work hard for you. (Ferrandi, 2017).

People do not want to work for you. Be a team member. Your employees will
work harder and be happier if you are on the same level as them. (Tuchscherer, 2017).

An employee can choose whatever project he/she wants to engage in,

harnessing the productivity of the employee. It is up to the employee to assess the
lifecycle of the project and determine what elements he/she will need to complete the
project.

This type of style is not without faults of course. Drawbacks would be working to actually
develop the skills they need to achieve day-to-day and monthly tasks you are looking for.
(Swift, 2017).

Statement of the Problem

The This study aims to investigate the competence or strategy that management
style of the small business owner due to their customers.

Research Design. The purpose of this study is to let the small business

maximize profit for its owners or stakeholders and managing their small business in their
way. The dependent variable was not manipulated but rather measured through a
survey of the perception of the cross-section of the members of the population.

Research methods. The study method has a long and respected history in
mainstream management literature. This study presents the research methods such as a
survey of the small business that implementing. This method is also gaining acceptance,
along with other qualitative methods, within the small business and owner research
community.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be of great benefit to the following:

8

Owners. A small business owner must make gathering market information and ongoing
process in the high priority. He then can be more confident in the decisions he makes
knowing they were based on solid data rather than guesswork.

Customers. Customer satisfaction and loyalty are the most important factors that affect
the automotive industry. Customer service quality, product quality, customer satisfaction,
and loyalty can be measured at different stages.

Competitors. Competitors help an organization to discover its weaknesses, to identify

opportunities for and threats to the organization of the industrial environment. The
organization does a competitor analysis to measure/assess its standing amongst the
competitors.

Definition of Terms

The following terms will be used extensively in this study and shall be taken according
to the definition given below:

Customer. A person or company receives, consumes or buys a product or service and

can choose between different goods and suppliers. The main goal of all commercial
enterprises is to attract customers or clients and make them purchase what they have on
sale.

Management style. It is to perform many roles in an organization and how they handle
various situations will depend on their style of management. A management style is an
overall method of leadership used by a manager.

Competitors. A person, business, team, or organization competes against you or your

company. If somebody is trying to beat you in a race, that person is your competitor.

Review of Related Literature

A study by Twomey (2016) When you are looking to grow from a solo-pruner to
a business owner who leads, Is team, my number one small business management
tip is to build systems.

By having systems, you can bring someone in who knows nothing about how
your business runs, and they can learn a systemized way to do things the way that
you want them to be done. Often this does not occur with the first time you hire an
employee. It is a bit more of a shotgun approach. However, once you can build these
systems, you can duplicate your staff and build a business that can scale based
on the systems that you have built.”

Several factors for management of small business owners an important

part of planning your business entails knowing the key things that can tell you
when you have reached your goals. called key success factors, these are
indicators or milestones that measure your business achievements and help
determine how well you are progressing towards your goals and objectives.

Without determining your key success factors, you run the risk of needing to
make expensive changes of direction later as you have not aligned your objectives
to the success of your business. You must sit down and think what you really
need to do to make your dream business a success.

It was also noted that while experience was a significant factor. This will support
Benson (2017) it’s important to constantly teach your employees to make them
successful at their job and keep them motivated. I break the things I try to teach
my employees into two groups. One is the strategy and direction of the business,
the other is the set of skills that they need to be successful. I believe that regular
communication and training is important, because both of these topics are moving
targets.
10

And this study is how to manage their small business and how they
survive their business failure. They study it so it might help to other business,
that's why Steve Benson the one who suggested this study, small business
management tip is this: Hire for attitude and train for skill.

Let’s face it, an employee with a bad attitude is not going to benefit your
business at all—regardless of how ‘skilled’ hey are. You rarely can improve the
attitude of an employee. However, an employee with the right attitude? You can give
them the training they need to be successful in your small business. It really is
a win-win for both the employee and business owner.”

According to Vierzen (2016) Stay on top of your books and budget so

you always have a good idea of where your business is at financially, especially
with expenses and revenues. Hire a good business accountant and ask your
accountant to hold you accountable for staying engaged with your business
finances . A great way to do this is to have your accountant’s office call you for
quarterly review meetings in their office. It will cost a little extra for their time
but it’s worth the money for the benefit of knowing exactly where your business
is at financially. Regular reviews are essential for long-term growth planning, so
it’s a good habit to get into early on. Of course, it’s never too late to undertake
the habit of regularly reviewing your finances.

Doyle (2017) small business management tip would be to automate as

much as you can to free up your time. As small business owners, we have so
many things to do that we often spend all our time in the day-to-day running of
the business instead of growing it.

Tasks like staff rotas, invoicing, chasing invoices, mileage expenses,

payroll, and tax used to take up hours and hours of my time. Now I have a
system in place, so all I must do is fill in the staff rotas and all the invoicing,
payroll, mileage expenses are done automatically.
11

Rodriguez (2016) one small business management tip for small business
owners and entrepreneurs is cantered on goal setting. It’s critical to define where
you want to go and develop goals on how to get there.

With goal setting comes transparency and team alignment on these goals.
Ensuring everyone from the top of the organization to the interns understand the
direction and goals of the company has been critical to our success as a
business.

Earlier on when an organization is growing, it’s key to have everyone on

the same page, and in order to do that, there must be transparency and access
to the information. When the entire team is aligned and smart goals are set, you
will be set up for success.”

In a study by Harst (2018) that the best way to manage your employees
is to offer flexibility. Our industry requires our people to go all over the country
to get the job done, meaning that they often must spend time away from their
family. Retaining a loyal team is important to me, so if a certain employee has
been traveling excessive amounts in a short space of time, I offer them the
option to accept the more things that they think could be streamlined or improved.
This way it feels more like a team environment than a dictatorship.

Scharage (2016) best way to manage your day to day activities and
employees as a small business owner or entrepreneur is to work from a daily,
handwritten to-do list. This is much more effective than, say, a mobile app. Craft
yours with three categories in mind—one for items you must get to that day, and
a second for things that need your attention but can wait. Make the last category
for minor tasks and responsibilities that you can knock out when you have the
extra time.

Based on the review related literature. It has been found that are many factors
that may effect of their managing style of the small business that owned.

This study is proposed to evaluate the manager of small business owner’s

establishment ST MARIA ROXAS PAGADIAN CITY . And the study will also
identify their stability and how they able to manage their small business.
Chapter 3

Research Methods

This Chapter Highlights the Components of research method is gathering,

analysing and interpreting the data to be generated for this study. This includes
the research design, research environment, research subjects, research instrument,
data gathering procedure, sampling techniques, statically treatment and ethical
consideration. Those are considerably important in the search for the significant
answer to the queries of this study.

The case-study method has a long and respected history in the mainstream
management literature. The philosophy and implications of the case-study method
have received considerable attention and there are a few standard texts on the
approach. The method is also gaining acceptance, along with other qualitative
methods, within the small business and the entrepreneurial research community.
Yet there has been little discussion of the distinctive philosophical consequences
of applying the case-study approach in this area.

Descriptive Research is a form of conclusive research use to describe

both the composition of a group in such terms as income, gender, age and
education and the characteristics of group members regarding both current and
future behaviour. Descriptive elements of business efforts perused by owners and
managers of large and small firms. It includes key elements of sustainability,
motivation, business education, management skills and small business link to
entrepreneurship success (Ayala & Manzano, 2014; Schumpeter, 1939).

Yin (2014) suggested using the descriptive case study with qualitative
research method to describe a trend in its real-world context. Case study design
involves investigating or analysing a single-case or multiple-case unit bound by
time and activity The selection of two or more cases in a multiple-case study
expecting to produce similar findings is literal application Multiple case study,
using the original replication model, applies to this research.
13

Research Environment

This study will be conducted around the Small business that are private
owned businesses.

This study is in Santa Maria, Roxas Street, Pagadian City Zamboanga del
Sur. Santa Maria is a barangay in the city of Pagadian, in the province of
Zamboanga del Sur. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 5,158. This

Sampling Techniques

The study will use the simple random sampling technique in identifying the
small business participants to be taken among the Santa Maria. Simple random
sampling were be the appropriate sampling technique to use since there are only 3
purok at Santa Maria, who have a small business.

Sampling refers to the act of selecting specific number of entries from a

large set of data for further analysis. Business research often generates vast
quantities of data, especially in market-focused research such as demographics.
Sampling techniques in business research allow researchers to work with a more
manageable subset of data that they believe accurately represents the trends in
the larger collection . (Ingram, 2017).

Instruments

The instruments to be used in gathering data for this study will be the
test questionnaires. The questionnaires to be made will based on the topic which
15

is management business owner. The owners are answered the questions that
provide, they do not suffer to answer questionnaire because they know how they
get started their own business it’s easy for them to answer our questionnaire. In
Santa Maria, Roxas District Pagadian City Roxas District, there are only 3 purok
who have a small business.

Data Gathering Techniques

The data gathering procedure of the study will involve the following
activities which to be done properly to generate the necessary data, securing an
approval from the president of Saint Columban College and asking for official
permission from the principal of the Senior High School Departmentnt of the
aforementioned school.

Then, the researchers will eventually survey the different purok at ST.
Roxas District, With given schedule that has identified randomly to administer the
questionnaires to students participants but before that, that he will explain first the
purpose of the study and the manner of answering the questionnaires, retrieval
to the accomplished questionnaire an assembling of the data to be gathered.

Statistical Treatment

The data will be treated statistically based on the use to follow the
process of the small business on how they handle the descriptive statistic such
as the frequency count and the mean percentage scores MPS in measure
central tendencies.

It’s where you can find the difference where the students or customers
that can be attracted so they obtain the attention of the customers.

Data Analysis

The types of data that we gathered is survey and questionnaire to collect

data at same time, it’s time to begin the process of calculating survey results.
Here’s how our Survey Research make sense of quantitative data, from looking
at the answers and focusing on their top research questions and survey goals,
to crunching the numbers and drawing conclusions.
16

Ethical Considerations in Research

Research ethics provides guidelines for the responsible conduct of

research. In addition, it educates and monitors scientists conducting research to
ensure a high ethical standard. In a business often arise problems that have to
do with ethical principles inside or outside the business’s environment. Depending
on the aspect they affect, business ethics fall into further categories such as
social responsibility, deontology, workplace ethics and many more.

Honestly report data, results, methods and procedures, and publication

status. Do not fabricate, falsify, or misrepresent data. Openness: share data, results,
ideas, tools, resources. Be open to criticism and new ideas. Social Responsibility:
Strive to promote social l good and prevent or mitigate social harms through
research, public education, and advocacy.
