using of the EMS of ISCOM5508, please read this manual carefully. The manual is composed of the
following chapters:
Appendix B Glossary
Appendix C Acronyms
General Safety Instructions
The following instructions serve as a general guide for the safe installation and operation of
telecommunications products. Additional instructions, if applicable, are included inside the manual.
Safety Symbols
This symbol may appear on the equipment or in the text. It indicates potential safety
hazards regarding product operation or maintenance to operator or service personnel.
Danger of electric shock! Avoid any contact with the marked surface while the
product is energized or connected to outdoor telecommunication lines.
Protective earth: the marked lug or terminal should be connected to the building
protective earth bus.
Some products have terminals which are permanently protective earthing conductors.
Please be sure well connected to earthing before equipment connected to supply.
Some products may be equipped with a laser diode. In such cases, a label with the
laser class and other warnings as applicable will be attached near the optical
transmitter. The laser warning symbol may be also attached.
Please observe the following precautions:
• Before turning on the chassis with optic module, make sure that the fiber optic
cable is intact and is connected to the transmitter.
• Do not attempt to adjust the laser drive current.
• Do not use broken or unterminated fiber-optic cables/connectors or look straight at the laser beam.
• The use of optical devices with the equipment will increase eye hazard.
• Use of controls, adjustments or performing procedures other than those specified herein, may
result in hazardous radiation exposure.
ATTENTION: The laser beam may be invisible!
Always observe standard safety precautions during installation, operation and maintenance of this
product. Only qualified and authorized service personnel should carry out adjustment, maintenance
or repairs to this product. No installation, adjustment, maintenance or repairs should be performed by
either the operator or the user.
Some products have more than one power supply cord. Disconnect 2 power supply cords before
servicing to avoid electric shock.
Before operating modules in the electricity conditions, please be noticed that optical modules shall
be connected with optical fiber wires or shield with optical module cover for fear that laser light
harms to operator’s eyes.

This chapter mainly introduces the typical networking application situation of ISCOM5508 device.
In FTTB networking situation, ONU is generally placed in the corridor, which distributes service to
different users through different cables.
2.1.1.2 Networking
The typical FTTB networking structure deployment of ISCOM5508 device is shown below.

ONU downlink Mini DSLAM device can provide multiple types of access services to users.
ONU downlink LAN Switch device can provide Ethernet access service to more users.
In FTTH networking situation, ONU is generally placed in user's home. Different types of ONU can
provide different interfaces to meet different types of access demands:
Connect phone through POTS interface.
Connect IAD or HGW through FE interface to provide video, voice and data services.
Connector CATV TV through RF interface to provide tradtional CATV service.
FTTH networking is suitable for the occasion of new ommunity, villa area and old community with
network transformation.
2.1.2.2 Networking
The typical FTTH networking structure deployment of ISCOM5508 device is shown below.

Data service
PC connects ISCOM5508 by ONU, uplink access to IP network.
Video service
Use IPTV or CATV mode to provide video access service to users.
IPTV
Provide video service over IP multicast flow, and the user-selectable program source.
ISCOM5508 can achieve multicast user privilege management and program management over IGMP
Proxy and dynamic controllable multicast. After passing ISCOM5508 authentication, IGMP
messages from multicast user will be sent to the IPTV server by ISCOM5508.
Video service flow is issued from multicast server, reachs ISCOM5508 through IP network, and is
sent to users by ISCOM5508 according to authentication results.
In client side, users take video signal ending and media conversion by STB device as well as
control the program switching.
CATV
CATV mode: transmit traditional analog signal television programs through coaxial-cable.
The video program flows switch to downstream 1550nm long light wave by electro-optical, combine
with device downstream light wave through the combiner and use WDM technology descending in
an optical fiber. After reaching ONU, the video signal will be separated and connected to TV directly
so as to achieve CATV vedio access service.
