F r o m the P u b l i s h e r ' s P r e f a c e : ' P r o f e s s o r Landau gave a
s i x - s e m e s t e r c o u r s e on Number Theory at the University of
GSttingen which was published in t h r e e volumes as , T Vorlesungen
uber Zahlentheorie" (Leipzig, 1927) each volume being in two
sections. The titles of these six sections a r e "Aus der e l e m e n -
t a r e n Zahlentheorie" and "Aus der additiven Z a h l e n t h e o r i e "
(Vol.1), "Aus der analytischen Zahlentheorie 1 ! and "Aus der geo-
m e t r i s c h e n Zahlentheorie" (Vol.II), "Aus d e r a l g e b r a i s c h e n
Zahlentheorie" and "Ùber die F e r m a t s c h e Vermutung" (Vol.III).
The p r e s e n t work i s a t r a n s l a t i o n of " E l e m e n t a r e Z a h l e n t h e o r i e " .
The book i s well known to m a t h e m a t i c i a n s in i t s e a r l i e r G e r m a n
editions (one of them in A m e r i c a , 1947); a new review and r e -
commendation i s therefore deemed to be u n n e c e s s a r y .

p e a r e d in mimeographed form in 1943 under the title "Ordinary
Differential Equations in the Real Domain with E m p h a s i s on Geo-
m e t r i c Methods" (Brown University), and were r e i s s u e d by M . I .
T. in 1956. T h e i r appearance in book form i s m o s t welcome.

The first chapter p r e s e n t s the basic existence and unique-


n e s s t h e o r e m s for f i r s t - o r d e r equations in a single unknown,
employing first the Cauchy-Euler approximation method, and
secondly the method of successive approximations.
The analysis for s y s t e m s i s c a r r i e d out in Chapter 2. The
third chapter deals with linear s y s t e m s , and includes a section
on Green 1 s function.

Chapter 4, "Singularities of an Autonomous S y s t e m " , and


Chapter 5, "Solutions of an Autonomous System in the L a r g e " ,
a r e especially valuable. The fourth chapter includes a detailed
analysis of non-linear s y s t e m s besides the standard m a t e r i a l on
l i n e a r s y s t e m s . The chief r e s u l t of the fifth chapter i s the P o i n -
c a r é - B e n d i x s o n t h e o r e m on limit c y c l e s . The chapter ends with
a discussion of P o i n c a r e ' s index of a c u r v e , orbital stability of
