Changes in Matter

1. Physical Change: A change in size, shape , form or state of

matter that does not change the matters identity.
2. Chemical Change: A change in matter in which the substances
that make up the matter change into other substances with
different chemical and physical properties.
3. Law of Conservation of mass: A law that states that the total
mass before a chemical reaction is the same as the total mass
after a chemical reaction.
Matter changes

Imagine going to a park in spring and then

return in fall to the same spot, what changes
do you think you would see?

● Matter such as the things you see at a

park can change in many ways. These
changes can be physical or chemical
What are physical changes?

A change in size, shape , form or state of

matter that does not change the matters
identity. When a physical change occurs
the chemical properties of the matter
stay the same.

Examples of physical changes are:

1. Changing shape/size
2. Dissolving
3. Changing states
Physical Changes:
Changing shape/size
Changing the shape of objects can happen by crushing, cutting, slicing or
chopping it.
Dissolving
Dissolving is a physical change because the identities of the substances do
not change when they are mixed.
Changing states
When the state of matter changes into another state is a physical change. This
can happen by melting or boiling and condensation, freezing or evaporation
What Is Chemical Changes
A change in matter in which the substances that make up the
matter change into other substances with different chemical and
physical properties. Another name for a chemical change is a
chemical reaction. Signs of a chemical change happening are:

1. Heat and light

2. Formation of gas
3. Formation of precipitate
4. Color change
Signs of Chemical Changes
Heat, Light and sound
When a fire burns there are gases released and after it is burnt, you’re left
with the ashes - A new product. The heat that is released is thermal energy
Formation of gas
Bubbles of gas can form during a physical or chemical change. Sometimes you
cannot see the gas forming but you can smell it, like baking a bread.
Formation of a precipitate
A precipitate is a solid that forms when 2 liquids combine. A precipitate is
NOT a state change from liquid to solid, instead it is the result of 2 liquids
reacting with each other forming a new substance
Color change

Painting your room a different color would be a physical change but when
there is a color change between substances that react with each other it is
chemical change. Like the color changing of a banana.
Law of Conservation of Mass
Physical changes do not affect the mass of substances. Like when melting Ice,
the mass of the ice is the same as the mass of the liquid.

Mass is conserved or unchanged during a physical change.

Mass is also conserved during a chemical change
