1. SCOPE

The purpose of these product specifications is to define the required characteristics for double-sided
self-adhesive tapes intended to attach inserts to the inside or outside of vehicle bodies or to parts that
are then attached to the bodywork. It applies to tapes delivered directly to Renault Trucks, as well as
to adhesive tapes applied to parts delivered to Renault Trucks (trims, badges, mouldings, etc.).

Double-sided self-adhesive tapes are classified by function and category according to the type of
attachment to be made:

- function No 1 - category 1: attachment of highly stressed external parts only with the adhesive
(e.g.: protective mouldings, small badges, rubbing strips) (1),
- function No 1 - category 2: attachment of light and not particularly stressed external parts to
locked attachments (e.g.: small badges, roof decorative fitting mouldings, partly clipped seals),
- function No 2: attachment of internal parts (e.g.: dashboard badges, miscellaneous soft trims) (2),
- function No 3: temporary attachment of adhesive-coated parts (e.g.: louver seals, registration
plate support)

2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The thickness of the tape (excluding the protective tape) is determined according to French Standard
NF X41-026.

The thickness shall comply with that noted on the approved sample.

5.1.2. Linear density

This characteristic may be required for a determined width depending on specific requirements.

In this case, it shall be determined according to Test Method D45 1228, and shall comply with that
noted on the approved sample.

5.1.3. Mountability

The test is performed according to the conditions of Test Procedure 39-09-539.

There are no special requirements; the value obtained may be an explanatory element in cases of
non-compliance in terms of adhesion.

5.1.4. Protective paper adhesion

Unless indications to the contrary are mentioned in the validation plan, the adhesion of the protective
paper is evaluated according to Test Method 1157.

In the tape’s initial state and after ageing according to Test Methods D47 1165-A-7 and D47 1165-R-
3, adhesion shall be equal to or less than 1 N/cm of width.

In addition, the protective paper shall not come off under its own weight.

5.2. FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Functional characteristics are determined using mounted tapes according to the conditions of Test
Procedure 39-09-539, bonded on both sides.

The table below indicates the number of shocks the adhesive tape must be able to withstand:
N° 39.05.4005 / A
Page 9/15
Functions Requirements
n°1 – category 1 = 100
n°1 – category 2 = 25
N°2 = 100

5.2.6. Resistance to creep in warm conditions

This characteristic is only demanded for function No 1 - category 1 and function No 2.

At least three test pieces are applied according to the conditions of Test Procedure 39-09-539, and
these test pieces are installed in accordance with the diagram in appendix 1.

The test pieces obtained in this way are placed in a conditioned room at 23°C ± 2°C and 50% ± 5%
relative humidity for 22 hours. A weight of 800 grams per centimetre of bonded width is suspended
from each test piece. The assemblies are exposed to heat for 30 minutes at:

- 85°C for function 1 - category 1,

- 70°C for function 2.

After exposure to heat, no slippage, separation, or peel shall be observed.

NOTE: If the adhesive can be characterised on parts, 50mm long samples shall be applied to the
actual substrate. If this is not possible, the reverse side substrate should consist of sheet
metal coated with cataphoresis after burning in.

5.2.7. Resistance to bending in warm conditions

This characteristic is only required for function No 1 (see appendix 2 for the test assembly) and
function No 3 (see appendix 3 for the test assembly).

Perform at least three tests.

If the adhesive is being characterised on parts make 250mm long test pieces and apply them to the
actual substrate. If the adhesive comes in roll form, the back is fitted with a test piece consisting of an
anodised aluminium strip (see 4.) of 250mm in length.

Remove 5mm of the adhesive on each side of the test piece.

Cut the substrates (actual substrates or sheet metal coated with final painting after burning in)
to 270mm x 30mm.

Apply the test pieces according to the conditions of Test Procedure 39-09-539.

After 5 minutes at 23°C ± 2°C and 50% ± 5% relative humidity, place the test pieces side by side on
the test assembly described in appendix 2 or appendix 3.

After 1 hour, expose a first set of test pieces to heat for 30 minutes at 85°C, and a second set of test
pieces to heat for 16 hours at 70°C.

After the tests, no separation of the ends shall be noticed.

5.2.8. Resistance to high-pressure cleaning

This characteristic is only required for function No 1.

Resistance to high pressure cleaning is determined by means of a high pressure cleaning apparatus
with the tapes applied to a substrate representative of the vehicle configuration; the conditions being
the following:

- water temperature : 60°C,

- pressure : 80bar,
N° 39.05.4005 / A
Page 10/15
- nozzle-to-tape distance : 15cm,

- water jet spraying angle : 15° and flat,

- angle between the water jet direction and the tape: 45° ± 5°.

Apply the tape to its substrate and place the assembly in a conditioned room at 23°C ± 2°C and 50% ±
5% relative humidity for 72 hours.

Carry out a spraying cycle (see definition below) with mains water.

Stop spraying the part for 1 minute.

Carry out a spraying cycle (see definition below) with mains water to which 1% of RM 81 ASF (type
MABEC R100263527) or any other product of demonstrated equivalence has been added.

Stop spraying the part again for 1 minute.

Carry out a final spraying cycle (see definition below) with mains water.

DEFINITION OF A SPRAYING CYCLE:

- spray the leading edge of the part for 3 seconds without moving the nozzle of the high-pressure
cleaning apparatus, positioning the water jet at an angle of 45° ± 5° with respect to the part plane
(see appendix 4),

- without changing the inclination angle (45° ± 5°) between the water jet and the part plane,
perform one sweep of the entire part; the displacement speed of the nozzle should be 5 cm/s.

- after one test per day for 7 days, adhesion shall still comply with that established in these product
specifications.

6. OTHER REQUIREMENTS
