A 3-phase, 4-pole, 60 Hz induction motor has a starting torque of 100% of the full load torque and a

maximum torque of 200% of the full load torque. Find, (a)The slip at maximum torque, (b) the slip at full
load, (c) the speed at full load.

Solution:

The relationship between starting torque and maximum torque is

T 2
= s s
T +
s s
Where:
TSt = Startig Torque
Tmax = Torque at maximum load
Sst = starting slip
Smax = slip at maximum load

Given:
TSt = 100%
Tmax = 200 %

Since at start-up, s = 1

a. =

Using shft+solve:
s = 0.26794919243

Note: there can be answers at shift+solve since it is a quadratic

equation. Choose the answer less than 1 since the slip of an induction
motor will never be greater than 1
b. For the slip at full load, use the relationship:
T s
=
T s

Use T2 as the torque at maximum load and s2 as the slip at maximum load. T1 for the
torque at full load and s1 for the slip at full load
T s
=
T s
1 s
=
2 0.26794919243

S1 = 0.13397459621

c. Speed at full load:

120f 120(60)
(1-s) = (1-0.13397459621) = 1558.8457 rpm
