Stanza 1:

• Poet is saying when the humid shadows hover( refers to dark clouds taking over and about to
turn into rainfall) over the starry spheres ( literal denotation of the sky night that is covered
with millions of stars), and these clouds filled with moisture, move around the sky are about
to bring rain. Sadness (darkness of the sky) is taken over and wiped off by the raindrops which
seems like tears of heaven. And poet is feeling blissful to hear to the rain drops that is bringing
back nostalgic memories.

Stanza 2:

• Expression of feelings when he hears the raindrops, every single sound of the raindrops falling
on the roof has an echo. After hearing the raindrops, he has many fanciful imaginations (busy
being start-poet’s mind is teeming with imagination). These all are recollected and the dreams
weave together like in a loom (apparatus for making fabric by weaving thread, here dreams
are woven by hearing the raindrops).

Stanza 3:

• Poet remembers his mother, who isn’t there anymore and her fond look when she used to
put him to sleep till dawn when he listens to the raindrops falling on the roof.
Whenever he hears this (refrain - repetition- here sound of the raindrops), he is reminded of
his mother and the good times.

• Patter- sound of raindrops is creating a dramatic effect.

TRANSFERRED EPITHET-
-adding of an adjective before noun in order to bestow positive/ negative traits to that
object./ The use of noun when it refers to another noun.
-melancholy darkness : here darkness is not melancholic, but it refers to sad people.
-dreamy fancies: It does not mean that the fancies are dreamy but refers to people who have
dreams.

Imagery is vivid and expressive language to evoke pictures or feelings.
