Background:
Kurnool district is one of the important districts in the state of Andhra Pradesh and the most prominent district of the Rayalaseema Region. The name of Kurnool has been derived from its original name of Kandenavolu. Consequent on the formation of Andhra State on 1st Octoiber 1953, Kurnool became its Capital and continued to be so till 1st November 1956, when Andhra Pradesh was formed. The

district is strategically located on one of the important National Highways, N.H.7 and N.H. 18. The district headquarters, Kurnool town is 200 Km. away from the state capital, Hyderabad. Kurnool district is gifted with rich natural resources. The district

is bounded on the North by major rivers of Krishna and Tungabhadra. One of the largest Hydro-Electric Power Project is constructed across river Krishna at Srisailam. Nallamalas and Erramalas are the two important mountain ranges in the district running parallel from North to South with thick vegetation. About 18% of total geographical area is under thick forest cover which is a rich source of forest wealth. The major portion of the district comprises rich black cotton soil which is

being cultivated aptly for growing rich cash crops like Groundnut and Cotton. Kurnool district is also endowed with rich mineral resources DISTRICT AT A GLANCE: Physical Features: East-Prakasam District West-Karnataka State North Mahaboobnagar, Rivers Tungabhadra and Krishna 17658 Sq.Km.(6.4% of total State area) 3 (Kurnool, Nandyal, Adoni) 54 821 918 Tungabhadra, Kunderu, Handri and Krishna Clay, Loamy and Sandy soils 630 mm

Scope for resource based industries:

Basing on the availability of the above resources and infrastructural facilities available in the Kurnool district the following industrial activities are suggestive of units of resource based, Demand based and Candidate based in the potential area with a view to help the prospective entrepreneurs as well as existing entrepreneurs. I) II) III) Mineral resource units Agro based units Horticulture based units

SPONGE IRON UNITS: The Mineral resources of this district would be turned as principal resource of Limestone and Iron ore as there is good qualities of limestone and iron ore with content of 50% to 60% Fe which are main raw materials for establishment of area and Veldurthy area

SPONGE IRON UNITS one or two units at Ramallakota

where there are good deposits estimated of 4.5 Million tones. CEMENT UNITS: Further it is suggested for two more Cement Manufacturing units at Kanakadripalli, Ankireddipalli, Ramallakota, Bethamcherla area as there are large sources of Cement grade limestone useful for Cement Industries in this district. It is estimated deposit of 3.25 Million tones in the area shown above. FOOD PROCESSING UNITS: The favourable factors like Horticulture products can be grown with little irrigation facilities and also this Kurnool district falls under category of Horticultural crops as there is product of Mango fruits i.e, Benesha variety which is grate demand in India as well as in the middle Eastern Countries. The product of this crop is very high and the product such variety is nearly 23000 MTs per annum at Banaganapalli, Mahanandi, Ramallakota, Veldurthy areas in this district. So there is

13

good scope for establishment of one or two fruit processing and fruit canning units like Mango pulp, Guava pulp etc, The food grains like Maize, Jowar, Rice, Groundnut etc., are food crops grown in this district. As there is good potential for Maize crop,

there is good scope for establishment of Ethanol unit at Nandyal area.
