Assignment Brief and Guidance

Guidance:

1- Include your name and student ID on the final report. For example, JohnDoe_17120024.docx,
the final report should be typed using computer and not hand written.

2- If plagiarism is detected between two or more reports the students’ mark will be capped
“Failed”.

3- The final report should be concise, where the quality of your comments on each of the tasks will
have a strong influence on the marks awarded.

4- Remember, the objective of the assignment is to assess understanding rather than the ability to
simply reproduce analytical procedures and this requires you to explain the steps in your analysis.
No waffle!

5- Whenever, the task asks you for writing a Software such as (MATLAB or EXCEL), make sure
that you include your code and all steps in the report, comment your code to show your steps and
explain them.

6- Whenever, the task requires plots, make sure to include them in your report, assure that all your
figures/plots are well labelled and numbered in the report.

7- The final report’s style, ordering, and coversheet are allocated “Pass” mark.

Scenario: You are currently training at a large engineering firm in Jordan Amman, and the management wants to
examine all of its trainees to see who qualifies to join the company after the training period passes. For that
examination, the management have selected multiple problems, in which all the trainees are familiar with since
they were part of the team that solved them during their internship. This examination was set by the company to
gauge each trainee’s understanding of different real-life problems. The examination includes three parts, Electrical
& Electronics, Energy, and Mechanical fields, to make sure that all of their employees have the general engineering
skills and capabilities, which allows them to understand and be able to communicate with engineers and technicians
from different backgrounds.

Task (I) Exploring Electricity and Electronics:

Part A) Perform the following connections using the provided kits. (Practical)

4

Part B)

1- Talk about the main uses of relays, and the difference between their NO and, NC contactors.

2- Design a circuit that employed the relay to activate a pump only when a normally closed relay was pushed
while also turning off a red led.

3- Give me real-world examples of how we may employ transistors in our daily lives, and feel free to use
any sketch.

4- In your own words, describe the working principle of LDR? Feel free to use any sketch.

4

Task (II) Wind Turbine:

Consider the following table:

Fan Wind Angle Angle Angle Angle Angle Angle Angle

Speed speed (0) (15) (30) (45) (60) (75) (90)
Low 8.20 -0.35 0.21 0.69 1.2 4.70 5.0 0.11

Medium 9.70 -0.60 0.40 1.17 2.0 6.78 7 0.03

High 11.7 -1.09 0.5 1.22 2.3 8.80 9.1 0.42

A- Using MATLAB or Excel, plot the voltage values vs the angle for the different wind speeds.

B- In your own words describe the performance of the wind turbine from the graph.

C- What are the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy sources such as wind or solar?

D- Write down the main components of a wind turbine and describe its function you can attach a sketch for an
illustration

5

Task (III) ) Alternative Energy:

Execute preliminary research on the limitations of employing alternative energy in Jordan, such as energy
storage issues or others (minimum two paragraphs and list your references)

Task (IV) CNC Mill and CNC Lathe:

1- Using the CNC milling machine, carve a 5cm x 5cm wax block with your name initials, using
ERAS BOLD ITC font, inside a grooved polygon; list the steps in detail.

2- Fabricate the symmetrical curved shown below using the Lathe CNC machine with a 38mm length.
List the steps in detail.

Task (V) Plastic:

1- Categorize the following items to the corresponding molding method: Extrusion molding,
compression molding, blow molding, injection molding, or rotational molding.

a) plastic plates b) Side visor (Car part) c) Water bottles

d) Dowel rods e) Canoe

f) Rubber Boot g) joint h) Cable trunk

5

2- In your own words, Discuss another type of molding that was not covered in class, using
examples and comprehensive explanations. Discuss its benefits and drawbacks, as well as
the cost and practicality of production.

Task (VI) Wind Tunnel:

Given the following data

Airfoil A
Angle (degrees) Lift (grams)
0 3
3 28
5.5 52
8 76
12 96

The surface area of airfoil A is (length * width*2) = 0.0273 sq. Meters

Wind speed = 28km/h
The dynamic pressure =1/2 ∗ 𝑝*𝑣2
𝑝 ∶ 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑖𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑢𝑏𝑖𝑐 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑒, 𝑣 ∶ 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑖𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑

1- Fill out the following table (Show your calculations)

Airfoil A
Angle of Lift reading in Dynamic Surface Area Lift
attack (Kg) pressure coefficient

2- Plot the lift Coefficient vs Angle

3- Suggest two changes in the experiment that will make the values of lift force different

Task (VII) Exploring mechanics:

Part A) Friction
1- Discuss in detail what is the difference between static friction and kinetic friction, what we measured in
our lab, and how we measured it.

2- Explain why our method to measure and calculate the coefficient of friction consider better than
exerting a force on the object.

5

3- Talk about the factor that affects the value of friction force.

4- Calculate the coefficient of three different objects that start moving at the following angles: 15
degrees, 36 degrees, and 70 degrees at the same surface.

5- A 4.0 kg block is pulled from rest along a rough horizontal surface by two forces, the first one is
20N in the left direction, and the second one is 6 N in the right direction. The coefficient of static
friction is 0.253. (g=9.81m/s). Answer the following: - Will the block move, or will it remain at
rest? – under the current external load, what is the magnitude of the friction force and the
maximum friction force? – under the same external load but along an inclined surface with an
incline angle equal to 35.5 degrees what is the magnitude of the friction force and the maximum
friction force?

Part B) Gears

1- Find the gearing ratio for the given gear train assembly
2- Given that the speed (ω) of the driver gear is 150 RPM find the speed of the blue gear

3- discuss the benefits of using gears and give an example from our life talk about it in detail
