There is also a risk of needle prick and sharps injuries among housekeeping staff from exposure to infectious medical waste spills. Additionally, there is a risk of environmental pollution and public health issues if toxic waste is not properly handled and stored. The committee assessed the risks and determined that adhering to proper waste handling policies and training staff could prevent diseases and injuries, while also protecting the environment. Opportunities exist to reduce infections through proper waste minimization, segregation, collection, transport, and storage practices.
