NARRATOR
This story is from Sweden.
Once upon a time there was a prince. The prince was sad because he didn’t
have a princess.

SCENE I: THE PALACE


BACKDROP: A palace

PRINCE
I’m so sad.

QUEEN
Why are you sad, my son?

PRINCE
I am sad because I can’t find a princess.

QUEEN
Let’s go for a walk.

SCENE II: THE PALACE GARDENS


BACKDROP: the palace gardens

(The prince and the queen are walking in the garden and they see a beautiful
girl.)

GIRL
Hello. What’s your name?

THE PRINCE
Is she a real princess?

THE QUEEN
No, she isn’t.

THE PRINCE
I’m so sad.

THE QUEEN
I have a fantastic idea. Let’s have a party and invite lots of princesses.

THE PRINCE
Awesome!

SCENE III: THE PALACE BALLROOM


BACKDROP: The palace ballroom

MUSIC: Greensleeves.

(The Prince and the Queen watch everybody dancing.


The music stops and everyone freezes.)

THE PRINCE
Is she a real princess?

THE QUEEN
No, she isn’t.

THE PRINCE
I’m so sad.

(The music plays and everyone dances.


The music stops and everyone freezes.)

THE PRINCE
Is she a real princess?

THE QUEEN
No, she isn’t.

THE PRINCE
I’m so sad.

(The music plays and everyone dances.


The music stops and everyone freezes.)

SCENE IV: A rainy night


BACKDROP: The dining hall of the palace

Sounds: the rain (not too loud)

(A girl comes to the palace door and knocks. She is invited into the palace.
The girl, the queen and the prince sit down to dinner.)

PRINCE
Is she a real princess?

QUEEN
I don’t know.

SCENE V: A bedroom
BACKDROP: A bedroom in the palace.

(The queen and the servant are in the bedroom.)

SERVANT
A pea, Your Majesty.

QUEEN
Thank you.

(The Queen puts the pea under the mattress.)

Enter the princess.

(The princess lies down on the mattress.)

QUEEN
Goodnight, girl.

PRINCESS
Goodnight, Your Majesty.

Exit the Queen.

(The next morning.)

QUEEN
Did you sleep well, my dear?

PRINCESS
No, I didn’t. There was a pea in my bed.

PRINCE
Is she a real princess?

QUEEN
Yes, she is!
