It will help you assemble, prepare and maintain the tnit for best performance. Please read and understand what it says. Before you start assembling your new equipment, please locate the model plate on the equipment and copy the information from it in the space provided below. The information on the model plate is very important it you need help from the MTD Customer Support Department. * You can locate the model number by looking on the surface of the base plate in the rear of the edger. WHEN YOU SEE THIS SYMBOL HEED ITS WARNING. Read the operator's manual carefully. Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and proper use of the equipment. Know how to disengage the blade control and stop the unit quickly Never allow children to operate equipment. Never allow adults to operate equipment without proper instruction. Keep the area of operation clear (at least 50 feet) of all persons, especially smal children and pets. Use the edger only as manufacture intended and as desoribed in the operator's manual Do not operate edger after it has been dropped or damaged. Return product to nearest authorized service facility {for examination and repair. Do not operate product, with damaged or excessively worn cutting blade, Dress properly-always wear safety glasses or goggles. Always wear safety footwear, and pants or slacks that cover your legs to reduce the risk of injury that may be caused by flying debris. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry that can be caught in moving parts. Use of gloves and substantial footwear is recommended when working outdoors, Do not operate edger when barefoot or wearing sandals or open-toed shoes. Wear boots, preferably with steel-toe caps. Objects struck by the blade can cause severe injuries to persons, The work area should always be caretully examined and cleared of all stones, sticks, wires, bones and other foreign objects, prior to edging. Never attempt to make any adjustments, other than depth of cut, while engine is running. ‘The use of accessory attachments not recommended by the manufacturer may cause hazard and will void warranty, Never operate the edger without proper guards, plates or other safety protective devices in place. DANGER: Your edger was built to be operated according to the rules for safe operation in this manual. As with any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result in serious. injury. Ifyou violate any of these rules, you may cause serious injury to yourself or others. TRAINING AND PREPARATION Handle fuel with care; itis highly flammable Extinguish all smoking materials and other possible sources of ignition. Use a uel container acceptable forthe purpose. Never add fuel io a running or hot engine. Fill fuel tank outdoors with extreme care. Never fil fuel tank indoors. Replace gasoline cap securely. iffuelis spilled, move product and fuel container from area and do not create a source of ignition Wipe up spilled fuel OPERATION Mako sure all nuts, bots, and screws are kept tightly in place, especialy the blade and all uards. Start the engine caretuly. Make certain the blade is the star position before attempting to start. Keep hhands, feet, clothing, and the lke well away from cutting blade and moving parts. Keep both hands on handles when blade is rotating. Keep feet away rom cutting area. Make sure engine is off and spark plug wire is disconnected when clearing jammed material from blade. Do not attempt to remove cut material nor hold material to be cut when engine is running or when cutting blade is moving Stay alert. Watch what you are doing. Use common sense, Do not operate edger when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or heavy medication. Never operate the product without good visibility or light Keep good footing and balance at alltimes. Do not overreach or stand on unstable support Do not force or abuse product. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. Do not operate engine above speed necessary to do the job. Do not run the engine indoors; exhaust fumes are dangerous, Never direct discharge of material towards bystanders nor allow anyone near the area of ‘operation. Use care in directing discharge to avoid glass enclosures, automobiles, and the like. Stay alert for uneven sidewalks, holes in terrain or ther similar conditions when using product. Always push slowly over rough ground. Do not use the product on graveled surfaces. Donnot operate edger in rain or wet locations. Always operate edger from behind the upper handle land position yourself where line of sight to cutting blade is blocked by guards. ‘After striking a foreign object, shut off the engine, ‘make absolutely sure the blade and all moving parts have completely stopped, disconnect the spark plug Wire to prevent accidental starting, then thoroughly inspeot the unit for any damage. Such damage ‘must be repaired before restarting and operating the edger. Remember, heavy vibration is generally a sign of trouble, ‘Always stop engine when edging or trimming is delayed or when walking from one location to another. Stop the engine, wait for blade and all moving parts to stop before cleaning, adjusting, repairing or inspecting the product. Always disconnect spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting, Muffler and engine become hot during operation and can cause a burn. Allow to cool down before touching, ‘Take all possible precautions when leaving the product unattended. Stop the engine and disconnect spark plug wire, MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE ‘When not in use, store product indoors in a dry place, locked or otherwise inaccessible to children, ‘Maintain product with care. Follow maintenance instructions given in this ‘manual for your product. To reduce the risk of injury and engine failure, do Not allow excessive grass, leaves or other debris to ‘accumulate on or in the edger. Wipe engine housing clean after each use. Keep air filter clean. Follow instructions for changing accessories. Replace any missing or damaged labels immediately. Do not operate unit if blade is excessively wom or damaged. Replace with biade which meets original equipment specifications, Do not attempt to repair edger. Have mechanical repairs made by qualified dealer or repairman. See that only identical replacement parts are used. Restrict the use of this power machine to persons who read, understand and follow the warnings and instructions in this manual and on the machine. 0 WARNING: YOUR RESPONSIBILITY Cased ADANGER eMNer wes Rotating cutting blade may throw objects causing personal injury. Figure 1 _ SECTION 2: ASSEMBLING YOUR EDGER IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped WITHOUT GASOLINE or OIL. After setting up the unit, service engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual packed with your unit NOTE: Reference to right or left hand side of the edger fs observed from the operating position. Contents of Carton (One Edger Assembly (One Plastic Bag Containing: Edger Operator's Manual Registration Card Engine Owner's Guide One Clutch Rood (747-1164) with One Ferrule (711-0392) ‘Two Flat Washers (736-0264) and ‘Two Haitpin Clips (714-0104) in place Grounding the Engine’s Spark Plug + Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and ground iton the top of the engine by placing its, rubber boot snugly over a bolt head. See Figure 2. Figure 2 Positioning the Edger Handles * Remove and discard any packaging cardboard that may be present between the upper handle and the lower handle. + Pivot the upper handle upward until it snaps into place. + Tighten the wing knobs which are located on both the left and right sides of the handle. See Figure 3. Save this hardware as it will be reinserted. Insert the ferrule located on the upper portion of the Clutch rod into the hole on the blade clutch/depth conirol lever. Secure with the flat washer and hairpin clip removed earlier. Figure 11 Beveling Placing the blade angle adjustment lever in the third, fourth, fith, sixth or seventh notch (from the right) will ut the spindle assembly at various angles for beveling With the edger as illustrated in Figure 12, IMPORTANT: When the spindle assembly is rotated counter-clockwise (puting the blade closer to a horizontal position), it IS necessary to change the Position ofthe front, left whee! to prevent the edger blade from striking the wheel. See Front Whee! Adjustment earlier inthis section. NOTE: Wheel styles vary by model. i A Figure 12 WARNING: Always place the blade clutch depth control lever in the DISENGAGED position before adjusting the blade angi Trimming Placing the blade angle adjustment lever in the notch furthest tothe left wil put the spindle assembly at a proper angle for trimming with the edger as illustrated in re 13. IMPORTANT: When the spindle assembly is rotated counter-clockwise (putting the blade closer to a horizontal position), it IS necessary to change the position of the front, le whee! to prevent the edger blade from striking the wheel. See Front Wheel Adjustment earlier in this section, Figure 13 Curb Wheel Adjustment The right, rear whee! of the edger can be lowered into one of five positions to ease the task of edging along a curb. To adjust the height of the curb wheel, proceed as follows: * Perform the Front Wheel Adjustment for curb wheel operation as instructed earlier in this section. * Lower the right, rear wheel by moving the curb height adjustment lever slightly to the left. * Place the right, rear wheel into an applicable position in relation to the height of the curb to be ‘edged along, Release the curb height adjustment lever to lock the wheel in position. See Figure 14. Figure 14 SECTION 6: MAINTAINING & SERVICING THE EDGER WARNING: Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine before performing any adjustment, repairs or maintenance. Refer to Figure 2. Lubrication Engine Refer to the separate engine manual packed with your edger for a detailed description of all engine-related service specifications. Wheels & Front Axle Lubricate the wheels and front axle at least once a season with a light oil, Also if the wheels are removed for any reason, lubricate the surtace of the axle bolt and. the inner surface of the whee! with light ol. 10 Pivot Points Lubricate the pivot points on the blade angle adjustment lever, blade clutch/depth control lever and curb height adjustment lever with light oll atleast once a season, Cutting Head Bearings ‘The two ball bearings in the blade spindle housing are lubricated and sealed at the factory and require no lubrication, Spindle Shatt Lubricate the two shoulder spacers and the entire area surrounding the compression spring on the edger's spindle shaft with ight oll (NOT WO-40) frequently during the season. Do NOT allow rust to form in t area. See Figure 15. \ \ Compression Spring (Lubricate well) Shoulder Spacer Figure 15 placing the Edger Blade Use two wrenches (one wrench to prevent the hex bott head from spinning and the other to remove the hex lock nut) to remove the edger blade. See Figure 16, Re NOTE: Wheet and blade styles vary by madel Figure 16 Remove and discard the edger blade but retain the bell washer and hex lock nut. Install the replacement edger blade, the bell washer (cupped side facing inward) and the hex lock nut removed earlier. IMPORTANT: Use a torque wrench to tighten the hex lock nut to between 37 foot-Ibs. and 50 foot- Ibs. Replacing the Drive Belt The edger drive belt is subject to wear and should be . replaced if any signs of cracking, shredding or rotting are present. To replace the belt, proceed as follows: Place the blade angle adjustment lever in the edging position. Refer to Figure 11 1" * Remove the blade spindle belt guard by removing the hex screws, two lock washers and two hex nuts which secure itto the blade spindle plate. See Figure 17. Place the blade clutch/depth control lever in the lowest notch (all the way forward), Remove the engine pulley belt guard by removing the two hex screws and two lock washers which secure itto the engine block. See Figure 18 ai —— —H Engine Pulley Belt Guard Figure 18 Remove the belt from around the engine pulley. Install the replacement drive belt around both the blade spindle pulley and the engine pulley. Reattach the blade spindle belt guard to the blade spindle plate with the hardware removed earlier. Reattach the engine pulley belt guard to the engine block with the hardware removed earer. f WARNING: Never operate the edger without both the blade spindle belt guard and the engine pulley belt guard in place. SECTION 7: OFF-SEASON STORAGE Observe the following when preparing the edger for * Store the edger in a dry, clean area. This limited warranty shall only apply if this product has been operated and maintained in accordance with the Operator's Manual furnished with the product, and has not been subject to misuse, abuse, com- ‘mercial use, neglect, accident, improper maintenance, alteration, vandalism, theft, fire, water or damage because of other peri! or natural disaster. Damage resulting from the instalation or use of any accessory or attachment not approved by MTD Products Inc. for use with the product(s) covered by this manual will void your warranty as to any resulting damages Normal wear parts or components thereof are subject to separate terms as follows: All normal wear part or compo ‘nent failures wil be covered on the product for a period of 90 days regardless of cause. After 90 days, but within the ‘two year period, normal wear part failures will be covered ‘ONLY IF caused by defects in material or workmanship of OTHER component parts. Normal wear parts and compo- nents include, but are not limited to, belts, blades, blade adapters, grass bags, rider deck wheels, seats, snow thrower skid shoes, shave plates and tires. Batteries are covered by a 90-day limited replacement warranty. HOW TO OBTAIN SERVICE: Warranty service is available, WITH PROOF OF PURCHASE THROUGH YOUR LOCAL AUTHORIZED SERVICE DEALER. These items carry a separate manufacturer's warranty. Please refer to the applicable manufacturer's warranty on these items, ». Routine maintenance items such as lubricants, fiers, blade sharpening and tune-ups, or adjustments such as brake adjustments, clutch adjustments or deck adjustments; and normal deterioration of the exterior finish due to use or exposure. 4d. MTD does not extend any warranty for products sold ‘r exported outside of the United States of America its possessions and territories, except those sold through MTD’s authorized channels of export distribu tion, No implied warranty, including any implied warranty of merchantability’ or fitness for a particular purpose, applies after the applicable period of express written ‘warranty above as to the parts as identified. No other ‘express warranty or guaranty, whether written or oral, ‘except as mentioned above, given by any person or contity, including a dealer or retailer, with respect to any product shall bind MTD. During the period of the War- ranty, the exclusive remedy is repair or replacement of the product as set forth above.
