NOTE: Use the Active Voice to focus on the action the Subject performs.

Passive Voice
NOTE: Use the Passive Voice to focus on the Object (the receiver of the action)
instead of the Subject (doer of the action). The Subject becomes the new Object.

Subject + be + Participle + By + Object

Apple and Next were founded by Steve Jobs.

Machu Picchu was built by the Incas.

Operating Systems are developed by lots of companies.

“Staying Alive” is sung by The Bee Gees.


Passive Voice
BE CAREFUL! There must be an Object in order to construct a Passive sentence.

Vargas Llosa wrote “Fierce Times” in 2019.

“Fierce Times” was written by Vargas Llosa in 2019.

Our classmates work at the gym on the weekends.

Passive Voice: Simple Present & Past

unknown or unimportant, or when the action is done by people in general.
