2. Internalize the fundamental moral principle as a teacher in a society.
3. Practice appropriate principles of morality as future teachers.

Importance of Personal Philosophy of Education


Ø Your personal philosophy of education is your “window” to the world and
“compass” in life.
Ø It should be concrete and real because it is your blue print in daily life.

Society and You


The community agreed with the following beliefs and attitudes about a Teacher
(Navarro, Rosita et. al., 1994).
1. The most intelligent child should be encouraged to enter the teaching profession.
2. Teacher sets moral standard of the community.
3. Teachers make good parents.
4. Men should be encourages to enter the teaching profession.
5. The teaching profession is one of the lowest paid.
6. Teachers should be paragons of virtue.
7. Children obey and respect their teachers.
8. Teachers play an active role in disciplining children.
9. Praising boosts a child’s confidence.
10. A Teacher is a child’s model.
11. Child’s interest in studies depends upon his/her teachers.
12. Parents entrust children’s welfare to teachers.

Principles of Morality and its Foundations


What is Morality?
Ø “The quality of human acts by which we call them right or wrong” (Parizo, 1964).
Ø Human action is right when it conforms with the norm, rule or laws of morality.

Ø A man’s action, habit or character is morally good when it is in accordance with


man’s nature and immoral when contrary to human nature.
Ø Intellect and free-will separate men and above from animals.

Foundational Moral Principle


Ø Principle – from Latin word “princeps” which means “a beginning” or “a
source”. It is which something is based, founded, initiated or originated.

What is Foundational Moral Principle?


Ø It is a universal norm upon which all other principles on the rightness or
wrongness of an action are based. It is further a “source of morality”.
Ø “Written in the hearts of men” – Natural Law.
Ø Ultimately means “DO GOOD AND AVOID EVIL”.

Other Versions of Foundational Moral Principle


Ø Chinese philosopher Kung-Fu-Tzu – “Do not do to others what you do not like
others do to you”.
Ø Christians Golden Rule – “Do to others what you like others do to you”
Ø Immanuel Kant – “Act in such a way that your rule can be the principle of all”.
Ø Buddhists – Eightfold Path.
Ø Muslims – Koran and Five Pillars
Ø Christianity – The Bible, 10 Commandments and 8 Beatitudes.

Teacher as A Person
Ø Code of Ethics of Professional Teachers (Preamble)
“Teachers are duly licensed professionals who possess dignity and
reputation with high moral values as well as technical and professional
competence. In the practice of their profession, they strictly adhere to,
observe and practice this set of ethical and moral principles, standard and
values”.
Ø A Teacher is expected to be a person of good moral character.
Ø A person of good moral character is (1) human; (2) loving; (3) virtuous; and (4)
mature.

Christians 2 Great Commandments:


1. Love God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your strength; and
2. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

Buddhists’ Eightfold Path: (World Book Encyclopedia)


1. Strive to know the truth;
2. Resolve to resist evil;
3. Say nothing to hurt others;
4. Respect life, morality and property;
5. Engage in the job that that does not injure others;
6. Strive to free their mind of evil;
7. Control their feelings and thoughts; and
8. Practice proper forms of concentration.

1. Prayer;
2. Self-purification by fasting;
3. Fasting;
4. Almsgiving; and
5. Pilgrimage to Mecca for those who can afford.

REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS:
1. What are the problems and issues related to teacher’s character and behavior
that you are aware of?
2. What are the factors that influence the value system and character of teachers
today?
3. Who among your former teachers have greatly influenced you to become a
teacher? How did their characters create an impact to you?
