Lumads (particularly the Tboli and the
Blaans), Moro indigenous peoples (such as
the Maguindanaon, Iranun, Meranaw,
Sama (Badjao), Sangir/Sangil), and
Christianized ethnolinguistic groups (such
as the Tagalog, Kapampangan, Ilokano,
Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Boholano, etc.).

HISTORY
• Centuries ago, the area that would be the South Cotabato
was sparsely inhabited by Maguindanaon pioneers and
Lumads which are under Sultanate of Maguindanao's
influence.

• After World War II, the final exodus of settlers from Luzon
and Visayas poured into the area's virgin land. In the early
1960s as population, trade and industries grew in southern
part of Cotabato, a clamor of local self-governance arose.
Thus, on July 18, 1966, South Cotabato was separated from
Cotabato as an independent province.

HISTORY
• With the creation of regions under Pres. Ferdinand
Marcos, South Cotabato was grouped with Region
XI, also known as Southern Mindanao, in 1975.

• In 1992, the province of Sarangani was formed out


of South Cotabato. Seven towns in southern and
coastal section of the province became part of the
new province, leaving South Cotabato with 11
remaining municipalities.

HISTORY
• Regional offices were relocated to South Cotabato in
accordance with EO 429 dated October 12, 1990, issued by
President Corazon C. Aquino during the expansion of the
newly created Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao,[7]
and EO No. 36 dated September 19, 2001, issued by
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo which says South
Cotabato is to be transferred from Southern Mindanao
region to Region XII and having the city of Koronadal as the
regional center of Region XII.

Topography
• South Cotabato covers a total land area of 3,935.95
square kilometres (1,519.68 sq mi).

• The province is situated on the southern section of


central Mindanao, bounded by the provinces of Sultan
Kudarat to the north and west, Sarangani to the south
and northeast, Davao del Sur to the far northeast, and
the Sarangani Bay to the southeast.

• The province is generally flat dotted with some hills


and mountains.

Culture
• The province, which is dubbed as the “Land of the
Dreamweavers” is located in the southern part of
Mindanao. The famous T'nalak is weaved in this
province. T'nalak weaving hailed as the province's
ultimate cultural emblem is a traditional master piece
of geometric patterns dreamt to life by T'boli women.

Seslong Festival
The Seslong Festival is a week-long
celebration that takes place in the town of
T'boli. It is a colorful and lively event that
showcases the T'boli people's traditional
dances, music, and costumes. The festival
also features a variety of activities such as
cultural presentations, food fairs, and sports
competitions.

Kasadyahan Festival (Tupi)
Kasadyahan Festival, "Sagana Sayaw sa
Kadalanan-Kasadyahan": Celebration
featuring street dancing competition coined
from Visayan word "Kasadya". It is a
convergence of various ethnic and cultural
dances featuring Tupi as the province's
flower, fruit and vegetable basket and a town
where various cultures abode.

Nilagpang na Tilapia

A broiled Tilapia in a big bowl full of


soup and three medium sized tilapia. It
is an ideal dish for people just coming
from a lengthy travel on the road.

Nilasing na Tilapia

Nilasing na Tilapia refers to a fried tilapia


dish wherein the fish is seasoned and
marinated in wine and then fried until
crispy and golden brown. It is served with
spicy vinegar such as sinamak or pinakurat.

Sinanglay

One of the delicious ways to prepare tilapia


or any other fish is Sinaglay. It is a way of
cooking in South Cotabato where the fish is
covered or wrapped in cabbage and cooked
in coconut milk.

Native Chicken Adobo

The chicken used in this dish has a


different flavor from that of commercially

A tinola-like chicken dish that cooks native
chicken with local herbs inside a bamboo.
What’s unique about this dish is the herbs
the tribe uses, which are the sangig, a mint-
like herb and Blaan sibuyas, a type of chive.
Both herbs grow in the mountains and the
community just cultivate it in their own
backyard.

Onuk Nelut
Another native chicken dish cooked with
spices in a bamboo stalk and uses Doun
Mengi, a kind of leaves for covering. The

HISTORY
• Cotabato or North Cotabato, officially the Province of
Cotabato, is a landlocked province in the Philippines located
in the SOCCSKSARGEN region in Mindanao.

• Cotabato derives its name from the Maguindanaon word


kuta watu (from Malay - "Kota Batu"), meaning "stone fort",
referring to the stone fort which served as the seat of Sultan
Muhammad Kudarat in what is now Cotabato City (which the
province derives its name from).

• The pace of settlement in the
region accelerated in the 1950s
and 1960s. The former
province of Cotabato was once
the largest in the Philippines.
In 1966, South Cotabato was
created as a separate province

• In December 1941, Japanese planes bombed and
invaded Cotabato. In 1942, Cotabato was occupied by
the Japanese Imperial forces. A military headquarters of
the Philippine Commonwealth Army existed in Cotabato
from January 3, 1942, to June 30, 1946, and the
Philippine Constabulary 10th Constabulary Regiment was
stationed in Cotobato from October 28, 1944, to June 30,
1946.

TOPOGRAPHY
• Cotabato covers a total area of 9,008.90 square
kilometres (3,478.36 sq mi)[18] occupying the
northeastern tip of Region XII and is centrally located in
Mindanao. It is bounded on the north by the provinces
of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon, on the east by Davao City
and Davao del Norte, on the west by Maguindanao and
on the southeast by Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur.

• Cotabato is strategically linked to the major "Arterial
Road System" that traverses and connects the province
to Davao City - SOCCSKSARGEN - Cotabato Corridor.

• Cotabato stretches from the east at Mount Apo, which


separates it from Davao, to the Piapayungan Range on its
boundary with Lanao in the west.

• Typhoons do not pass through Cotabato and rainfall is


evenly distributed throughout the year.

Culture
• Cotabato's population is majority Christian.
• The religious beliefs of the Manobo revolve around many unseen
spirits interfering in the lives of humans. They believe these spirits
can intrude on human activities to accomplish their desires. The
spirits are also believed to have human characteristics. They are
both good and evil in nature and can be evoked to both anger and
pleasure.
• While the religious practices of the Manobo vary slightly, there
seems to be at least one common thread linking them together.
Each culture believes in one "great spirit." This "great spirit" is
usually viewed as the creator figure. This might be a bridge to the
teachings of the Bible.

• Timpupo Fruit Festival


The Timpupo Fruit Festival features its Fruit Galore
wherein attendees are given the chance to eat all the fruits
they can consume. Fruits such as durian, mangosteen,
banana, rambutan, and lansones are some of the fruits
served in the said event. These fruit stands are held at the
City Plaza that is three kilometers long.

Pastil
a Filipino packed rice dish made
with steamed rice wrapped in banana
leaves with dry shredded beef,
chicken, or fish. It originates from the
Maguindanao people and is a
popular, cheap breakfast meal in
Mindanao, especially among Muslim
Filipinos.

It is made of ground rice and
sugar, mixed with a little bit of water.
This glutinous mixture cooked then
folded like a taco, it is then cooked in
oil. It is best eaten with either milk or

HISTORY
• The name Sultan Kudarat given to the province was
derived from the Maguindanaon Muslim ruler,
Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat who begun
to assert his leadership in the year 1619 and reigned
in the Sultanate of Maguindanao from 1625 to
1671. Through his leadership, Spanish forces were
successfully repelled from encroaching the Cotabato
region of south-central Mindanao.He is considered
a national hero, and in his honor the province was
named after him.

HISTORY
• Sultan Kudarat was once part of the Sultanate of
Maguindanao. It became one of the stronghold of
the Maguindanao society as some royal families
have established their own Sultanate in the region.

• Sultan Kudarat was part of the former province of


Cotabato, until its creation as an independent
province (along with Maguindanao and North
Cotabato) on November 22, 1973, through
Presidential Decree No. 341.

HISTORY
• One notable event that took place in Sultan Kudarat was the
Palimbang Massacre (also called the Malisbong Masjid
Massacre), which saw the mass murder of Moro residents of
Barrio Malisbong in Palimbang by units of the Philippine
Military on September 24, 1974,–1,500 two years after
Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law.

• Accounts compiled by the Moro Women's Center in General


Santos state that 1,500 male Moros aged 11–70 were killed
inside a mosque, 3,000 women and children aged 9–60 were
detained – with the women being raped – and that 300
houses were razed by the government forces.

Topography
• Sultan Kudarat is situated on the
southwestern section of central Mindanao. It
is bounded on the north by the provinces of
Maguindanao and Cotabato; on the south by
South Cotabato and Sarangani; on the east by
Davao del Sur; and on the west by the Moro
Gulf and the Celebes Sea.
• The province's total land area is 5,298.34
square kilometres (2,045.70 sq mi).

• Two major mountain ranges encompass the
province; the Alip Mountain Range in Columbio and
the Daguma Mountain Range within the towns of
Bagumbayan, Isulan and Esperanza

• Sultan Kudarat was once a part of the former


empire province of Cotabato and is located in the
southwestern part of the island of Mindanao.
Hundreds of first class caves are actually found in
this province. The province is also the top producer
of coffee in the Philippines.

Celebrated to pay tribute to the town's

Kalilang Festival
Kalilang actually a Maranaw term for
"Feast". They prepare their own native
foods and delicacies, put colorful bunting
and flag lets on the street they have a
showdown playing of kolintang, rituals and
entertainment dances!

Bibingkang kanin
Filipino kakanin made by baking a mixture
made with sticky rice, sugar, coconut milk and etc.

Coco Piaya
A sweet and nutritious kind of
process food filled with Coco sugar. With
Coco sugar as the main ingredients of the
product,it offers more nutrients and
vitamins than the ordinary table sugar.

Native Chicken Bulalo
The native chicken is cooked slow in brothe for 4
hours enough to soften the usually “hard” native chicken
meat, but not to the point of disintegrating its fibers
(which is kind of messy to eat). The chili hot, pepper
spiced chicken bulalo is perfect for the cold weather.
Chicken Ala Chocolata
Which is deep fried chicken laced with
chocolate and corn cream mix . Kind of unusual to
see chocolate sauced unto a fried chicken but at
El Favorito, they’ve the balance of taste you
wouldn’t get that “nakakaumay” taste of a sweet
chocolate

HISTORY
• The earliest civilization in the province can be found
in Maitum, Sarangani, where the Maitum
Anthropomorphic Pottery or Maitum Jars were
found.

• The Sarangani was once part of Sultanate of


Maguindanao. The establishment of the Sultanate in
the area cause of more Maguindanaon settlers
arrival.

• The province is divided into two sections, separated
by the Sarangani Bay and city of General Santos, and
it used to be part of South Cotabato until it was
made an independent province in 1992.

• Before its inception in 1992, Sarangani was part of


South Cotabato as the Third District of South
Cotabato. The province was created by Republic Act
No. 7228 on March 16, 1992, penned by
Congressman James L. Chiongbian. His wife, Priscilla
L. Chiongbian, was the first Governor of Sarangani.

• Sarangani covers a total area of 3,601.25 square
kilometres (1,390.45 sq mi) occupying the southern
tip of the SOCCSKSARGEN in central Mindanao. The
province is bordered on the central-north by South
Cotabato, northeast by Davao del Sur, east by Davao
Occidental, south by the Sarangani Bay and Celebes
Sea, and northwest by Sultan Kudarat.

A type of sticky rice cake that
originated in Cebu. It’s made of

Hot chocolate or the tsokolate de
batirol. It is prepared by adding

HISTORY
• Abbreviated as GenSan, is a 1st class highly
urbanized city in the region of SOCCSKSARGEN,
Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a
population of 697,315 people.

• Formerly known as Dadiangas, the city was named


after Gen. Paulino Santos, a former Commanding
General of the Philippine Army and the settlement's
leading pioneer.

• The nomadic Blaan people are the original inhabitants of
General Santos, and traces of their early settlement of the
area are found in the city's place names, which are derived
from their vocabulary. Their name for the city, Dadiangas, is
from the thorny Ziziphus spina-christi tree that was once
abundant in the area and is now a protected species under
Republic Act 8371 or the Indigenous Peoples Right Act of
2007. The B'laan tribe now lives alongside the city's new
generation of settlers and other immigrants.

Topography
• It is located on the island of Mindanao, it is the southernmost and
15th-most populous city in the Philippines. It is the regional center for
commerce and industry of the SOCCSKSARGEN region, and is
geographically located within the province of South Cotabato but
administered independently of it.

• The city is bounded by municipalities of Sarangani Province, namely


Alabel in the east, and Maasim in the south. General Santos is likewise
bounded by the South Cotabato municipality of Polomolok and
Sarangani Province municipality of Malungon in the north, and the
municipality of T'boli in the west.

Culture
• People from GenSan are mostly Roman
Catholics. There are also a large number of
Protestants and Muslims in the city. Every
February, the city celebrates the Kalilangan
Festival. And every September as also the
celebration of the city chartered anniversary
the Gensan Tuna Festival.

Tuna Festival
Thanksgiving and festivities are being celebrated annually through
its Tuna Festival during the Last week of August and the first week of
September highlighting on its main industry which is the Tuna fishing. This
is also in line with the celebration of the city's charter anniversary which
falls every 5 September and is also being set as the culmination day for
the Tuna Festival. Aside from parades and showcases, numerous culinary
competitions are being held to promote sumptuous tuna-based cuisines
and other delectable meals made from fresh sea food.

Yaman Gensan is an annual event in Gensan
that celebrates and promotes local
entrepreneurs. It is celebrated in July. Tuna
