LARGE SAMPLE TESTS

1. The mean lifetime of 100 fluorescent light bulbs produced by a company is computed to
be 1570 hours with a standard deviation of 120 hours. If  is the mean lifetime of all the
bulbs produced by the company, test the hypothesis =1600 hours against the alternative
hypothesis   1600 hours using a 5% level.
2. If 60 B.TECH CSE students are found to have a mean height of 63.60 inches and 50 IT
students have a mean height of 69.51inches. Would you conclude that the CSE students
are taller than IT students? Assume the standard deviation of height of graduate students
to be 2.48 inches. At 0.05 level.
3. Let a random sample of size 37 from a normal distribution N ( ,  2 ) yield x =4.7, σ2 =
5.76. Determine a 90% confidence interval for  .
4. The means of two large samples of 1000 and 2000 items are 67.5 cms and 68.0cms
respectively. Can the samples be regarded as drawn from the population with standard
deviation 2.5 cms. Test at 5% level of significance.
5. A test of the breaking strengths of two different types of cables was conducted using
samples of n1 = n2 = 100 pieces of each type of cable.
Cable I Cable II
_ _
x = 1925 y = 1905
1= 40 2 = 30
Do the data provide sufficient evidence to indicate a difference between the mean breaking
strengths of the two cables at 10% level?
_ _
6. Given that, n1 = n2 = 400, x = 250, y = 220, 1 = 40,  2 = 55. Find the standard error of
_ _
an estimate ( x − y )
7. Random sample of 1200 households from one town gives the mean income as Rs.500 per
month with a standard deviation of Rs.70 and a random sample of 1000 households from
another town gives the maximum income as Rs.600 per month, with a standard deviation
of Rs.90. Test whether the mean income of households from two towns differ significantly
or not at 0.05 level?
8. A machine puts out 16 imperfect articles in a sample of 500. After machine is overhauled,
it puts out 3 imperfect articles in a batch of 100. Has the machine improved?
9. In a sample of 1000 people in a state, 540 are rice eaters and the rest are wheat eaters. Can
we assume that both rice and wheat eaters are equally popular in this state at 1% level of
significance? (table value=2.58).
10. In a sample of 600 students of a certain college, 400 are found to use blue ink. In another
college from a sample of 900 students 450 are found to use blue ink. Test whether the two
colleges are significantly different with respect to the habit of using blue ink.
SMALL SAMPLE TESTS
1. A sample of 20 items has mean 42 units and S.D 5 units. Test the hypothesis that it is a
random sample from a normal population with mean 45 units.

2. A sample of 10 boys has the I.Q’s 70, 120, 110,101, 88, 83, 95, 98, 107 and 100. Test the
mean I.Q of the students is 100 at 0.05 level of significance.

3. A group of 10 rats fed on diet A and another group of 8 rats fed on diet B, recorded the
following increase in weight(gms)

Diet A: 5, 6, 8, 1, 12, 4, 3, 9, 6, 10
Diet B: 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 1, 2, 8.
4. Two independent samples of 8 and 7 items respectively had the following values:
Sample1: 9 11 13 11 15 9 12 14
Sample2: 10 12 10 14 9 8 10
Is the difference between the means of samples significant? Test at 1% level of
significance.
5. In one sample of 10 observations, the sum of the squares of the deviations of the sample
values from the sample mean was 120 and in another sample of 12 observations it was 314.
Test whether this difference is significant at 5% level of significance.
6. From two different localities of a town the following information is obtained regarding the
age (in years) of children:
Locality-A 3 6 9 12 15
Locality-B 7 8 9 10 11
Test hypothesis that is there any variation between the age group of children at 0.05
significance level?
