Unit –IV

1. Write down the general procedure for testing of hypothesis

2. 20 people were attacked by a disease and only 18 survived. Will you reject the
hypothesis that the survival rate, if attacked by this disease is 85% in favour of the
hypothesis that it is more,at 5% level.

3. In a sample of 1000 people in Maharashtra, 540 are rice eaters and the rest are wheat
eaters. Can we assume that both rice and wheat are equally popular in this state at 1%
level of significance?

4. In two large populations, there are 30 and 25 percent respectively of blue-eyed

people. Is this difference likely to be hidden in samples of 1200 and 900 respectively
from the two populations.

5. A cigarette manufacturing firm claims that its brand A of the cigarettes outsells its
brand by 8%. If is found that 42 out of a sample of 200 smokers prefer brand A and
18 out of another random sample of 100 smokers prefer brand B, test whether the 8%
difference is valid claim.

6. On the basis of their total scores, 200 candidates of a civil service examination are
divided into two groups, the upper 30% and remaining 70%. Consider the first
question of the examination..Among the first group, 40 had the correct answer, where
as among the second group, 80 had the correct answer. On the basis of these results,
can one conclude that the first question is not good at discriminating ability of the
type being examined here?

7. A sample of 900 members has a mean 3.4 cms and s.d 2.61 cms. Is the sample from a
large population of mean 3.25 cms and s.d 2.61 cms?

8. The means of two large samples of sizes 1000 and 2000 members are 67.5 and 68.0
inches respectively. Can the samples e regarded as drawn from the same population of
standard deviation 2.5 inches.
9. A sample of 500 items is taken from a population whose standard deviation is 20. The
mean of the sample is 50.Test whether the sample has come from a population with
mean 48.

Unit –V

Student t – Distribution:

1. Define t – distribution. Write down its properties & applications.

2. A certain stimulus administered to each of the 12 patients resulted the following
increments of blood pressure: 6, 2, 8, -1, 8, 0, -2, 1, 5, 0, 5, 7. Can it be concluded that
the stimulus has significant effect in increasing the blood pressure.
3. The heights of 10 males of a given locality are found to be 70, 67, 62, 68, 61, 68, 70,
64, 64, 66 inches. Is it reasonable to believe that the average height is greater than 64
inches? Test at 5% significance level assuming that for 9 degrees of freedom P(t>1.83)
= 0.05.

4. Two independent samples of 8 and 7 items respectively had the following values:
Sample I: 19 11 13 11 15 9 12 14

Sample II: 10 12 10 14 9 18 10 -

Is the difference between the means of samples significant?

5. A group of boys and girls were given an intelligence test. The mean score, S.Ps and
numbers in each group are as follows:

Boys Girls

Mean 124 121

S.D 12 10

Sample size 18 14

Is the mean score of boys significant different form that of girls?

6. A random sample of size 25 from a normal population has the mean 𝑥̅ = 47.5 and the
standard deviation s = 8.4. Does this information tend to support or refuse the obtain
that the mean of the population is µ = 42.5? (t table value is 2.797).

7. Describe the F – test for equality of variances of the two populations.

8. Two random samples gave the following results:

Sum of squares
Test whether the population
Sample Size Sample Mean of deviations
variances .
from the mean
1. In one sample of 8 observations
1 10 15 90
from the normal population the sum
2 12 14 108
of squares of deviations of the
sample values from the sample mean is 84.4 and in other sample of 10 observations it was
102.6. Test at 5% level whether the populations have the same variance.

10. Describe the χ2 – test of independence of two attributes.

11. Define χ2 – distribution. Write the applications of χ2 – distribution.
12. In an experiment of immunization of cattle from Tuberculosis, the following results were
Obtained:
Affected Un Affected
Inoculated : 12 28
Not Inoculated: 13 7
Examine the effect of vaccine in controlling the incidence of the disease.
