Dark Age Defense 2

Read Me First!
Hey, Paul here...

First off let me just say this book was an interesting project. I don’t know if it will
ever be profitable but, it was certainly a lot of fun to put together. So I hope you
find it useful.

Even if you don’t intend to use the info in the book as a basis for your own
preparations, reading it will at least put your mind at ease, knowing you are well
prepared... just in case.

Now, the info in this book was gathered from a variety of sources. Some of the
info came from people I’ve known for years... Other info came from more recent
acquaintances.

In some cases, I confirmed info with numerous technical papers and journal
articles.

And in other cases, I confirmed info with government agencies such as the Dept.
of Energy and the FERC...

So, as you can see, I didn’t just “cram” a bunch of fluff into this book... I verified
and confirmed it in an effort to make sure you get the most accurate info
possible.

Because I know, if it were my family, I’d want nothing less.

I hope reading this book inspires something in you. I hope it gives you a new
found sense of confidence and peace of mind. And I hope it spurs you into action
with your own preparations.

That way, when the crunch comes... you’ll be 10 steps ahead of the rest, no
matter what kind of disaster strikes.

3 Dark Age Defense

Chapter 1
Blackouts, Outages, and the
Slow Death of the Electric
Grid
There’s a very real chance your power will go out, and stay out, soon.

And not only for you...

Millions of Americans could plunge into darkness at any moment, with no way to
restore power for months, or even years.

Simply holding this book in your hands makes you part of a tiny, privileged
elite. One of a handful of people on earth who now has a direct line to the most
powerful force on earth.

Therefore, the information within these pages is more precious than gold, and
meant as a “last stand” resource for you and your family.

You see due to the recent surge in terrorism around the world, Homeland
security believes America’s power grid is at serious risk from cyber attack.

And they aren’t alone. The government-run OEIS, who manages our power grid
security reports:

Chapter 1: Blackouts, Outages, and the Slow Death of the Electric Grid 4
When terrorists finally topple our power grid, we could be without power for a
period of YEARS.

Imagine living without electricity for the next year – or more?

If you’re anything like me, when the power is out for even a short period of time,
your world starts to get very difficult...

But when the power stays out (like we’ve seen in many U.S. outages), your fight
or flight kicks in.

Because you know that means the water and sewage treatment plants stop
functioning.

Hospital generators stop running and patients go without treatment.

Elevators and most forms of transportation are stopped.

And many other aspects of daily life come to a halt.

In fact, the OEIS believes the damage would be so catastrophic...

It could “quickly undermine the U.S. Government, its military, and the economy.

As well as endanger the health and safety of millions of Americans.”

But that could never happen here... right?

I wouldn’t be so sure...

Because in my research, I stumbled onto a leaked report from the FERC – the
federal “regulators” of all U.S. electricity.

You may want to sit down for this...

The FERC believes a COLOSSAL terrorist attack, capable of completely wiping

out our power grid, and sending us into a “dark age“ could happen at any
moment. They’ve dubbed this attack “Blackout Day”.

And if that isn’t SHTF enough for you, listen to this...

The FERC claims terrorists have already begun “probing for weaknesses” in our
outdated power grid.

5 Chapter 1: Blackouts, Outages, and the Slow Death of the Electric Grid
Meaning it’s only a matter of time before they sink their teeth into it and bring
the whole thing down.

That’s why the fact that you’re reading this book right now is so important. You
need to know what you can do – right now – to be prepared.

This is not some paranoid rant. This is not fear mongering.

This is plain and simple…

You Are At Real Risk Of Having Your Power Go Out,

And Stay Out, For A Long Time!
And it’s not a question of if... but WHEN.

Experts believe a black-out or prolonged outage is inevitable... 100% inevitable.

If terrorists don’t succeed, then an earthquake, hurricane, or snow storm will.

Even a massive solar flare from the sun could collapse our grid.

Take for instance the flare that shut down Quebec’s Hydroelectric grid in 1989. It
took 93 seconds for 6 million people to lose power.

What would you do if your power went out? How long would you be able to
survive without electricity? And what about your family? Your neighbors? Your
community? Our country as we know it?

It’s time to stop waiting for “The Big One“. That day is right on top of us.

The real question is:

What will you do – right now – to be ready?

The most important thing I can teach you in these pages – the thing I believe will
truly set you free from the eventual chaos and tyranny of Blackout Day – is this:

It’s critical you learn how to produce your own electricity. From water, wind, the
sun...

Or even your own feces.

Chapter 1: Blackouts, Outages, and the Slow Death of the Electric Grid 6
This book will NOT tell you everything you need to know. No book can.

But this will at least give you a jump start on providing for your family and
surviving when the Dark Age falls on America.

7 Chapter 1: Blackouts, Outages, and the Slow Death of the Electric Grid
Chapter 2
The Imminent Fall of Big
Energy
A new breed of super-villain is emerging, bent on destruction more diabolical
and effective than even the worst terrorist organization.

Dubbed “cyber villains,” these schemers are hacking into U.S. computer systems
with criminal impunity, using the power of the internet to:

• Shut down our airways

• Immobilize our banking system
• Create economic chaos

...And wreak havoc of all kinds.

While no one can predict exactly where they’ll strike next, only you can protect
yourself and your family when they do.

And the first step is to arm yourself with the most powerful weapon in the entire
arsenal of cyber defense.

A Weapon Only You Can Provide...

...Simply by following the step-by-step guidance revealed in this book.

Because experts say it’s only a matter of time until cyber villains launch a
massive attack that cripples our power grid – causing the greatest blackout in
U.S. history.

Now I want you to imagine something...

Imagine you work at the power distribution control center for one of the largest
regions in the nation.

Even if you’ve never worked that kind of job before.

But imagine you’re sitting at your desk, wrapping up your workday, tossing away trash...

Chapter 2: The Imminent Fall of Big Energy 8

When all of a sudden – out of the corner of your eye, you see your computer
cursor zip across the screen. You look up, confused.

Nothing.

Maybe you brushed against the mouse or it was a trick of the light.

But then it moves again... only this time towards the emergency circuit breaker
controls.

A.K.A. – the emergency “shut-off” switches for substations across your city.

You gaze on in shock as your cursor clicks the button to start taking substations
offline.

That’s when the panic sets in. Blood rushes to your head as the realization hits
you.

You scramble to take back control of the mouse, shaking it back and forth like a
madman, as the dialogue box asks you to “confirm.”

There’s nothing you can do. The cursor clicks ‘OK’, and in an instant, you know
that the lights and heating for your home, your neighbors’ homes, and everyone
in your community is gone.

And all you can do is watch as the “ghost cursor” clicks off breaker after breaker.

The nightmare doesn’t end until nearly 60 substations are offline, leaving
230,000 people with no protection from the freezing temperatures outside.

And as a cherry on top – backup power to your distribution center was disabled
in the attack, leaving your crew in a panic as they stumble around dark control
rooms, trying to bring the region’s power back online.

Now, how would you handle a situation like this?

What if your grid was struck in the middle of winter – putting you and everyone
you care about at risk.

How would you protect your family and keep them warm through the night? Or
for the weeks to come?

Because the story above isn’t fiction... It was one worker’s account of the
sophisticated attack on Ukraine’s power grid in December 2015.

9 Chapter 2: The Imminent Fall of Big Energy

The attack was made possible by an insidious piece of malware known as
BlackEnergy3, which slipped unnoticed onto the network of Ukraine’s power
distribution centers.

And even more disturbing – cyber security researchers found evidence that the
attack was only a “dry run1”.

That’s right... The most advanced, grid-destabilizing piece of malware ever to

find success in the wild... was a test.

So how long until we see a disaster of such epic proportions right here in
America?

Because according to U.S. Ambassador, James Woolsey, facing such a disaster is

now “more serious than a nuclear threat.”

The cyber villains above took out nearly 60 of the substations in Western
Ukraine...

But they would have only needed to sabotage 9 of the 55,000 substations in the
U.S. to kick off a “coast to coast” blackout for 18 months (or more).

That means:

• No Light in Your Home. When the lights go out, the most basic needs
of human survival are triggered. At night, you’ll be completely in the dark
– unable to see, much less detect... anything.

• You Cannot Heat Your Home. If temps drop below 32ºF (like 70% of
the U.S. felt in 20202), there would be no electricity to pump heat into your
home. You or a member of your family could likely freeze to death.

• You Cannot Cool Your Home. The same is true of your air
conditioners. These too rely on electricity... and when it’s gone – they too
become useless. Certainly not good news if you’re trying to avoid a heat
stroke or heat exhaustion.

• Your Water Supply Becomes Poisonous. Forget drinking water. The

equipment used to treat your water... stop working. And any water left in
your pipes could lead to deadly health problems.

1 https://www.wired.com/story/crash-override-malware/
2 https://www.wlfi.com/content/news/573719282.html

Chapter 2: The Imminent Fall of Big Energy 10

• You Cannot Wash Or Use The Toilet. It’s not just a matter of no
drinking water... there’s also no electricity to operate the pumps needed to
deliver water to your home. Which means you can’t use your toilet, or wash
or clean anything at all.

• Your family starts going hungry. That’s because all the equipment
necessary to process, package, store, and distribute food... also stops
working. So unless you have a rifle and wild game in your backyard, you’re
SOL.

• Your Home Is Totally Defenseless. The “fortress” where your

children should feel safe and secure becomes a place of darkness, silence,
and vulnerability. A magnet for all kinds of danger – from house fires to
looting, and survivor crime.

• The Economy Goes Tits Up. When the lights go out, so does 90% of the
economy. People will not be able to buy food, medicine, or even gasoline. If
this happens during a nationwide emergency, things could get really bad,
real fast.

• Modern Navigation Technology Doesn’t Work. That includes

computers, smartphones, tablets, and even GPS devices. When was the
last time you drove somewhere new without pulling up ‘Waze’ – or even
breaking out a map?

• You Cannot Communicate. All forms of modern telecommunications

are rendered nearly 100% ineffective. This includes your smartphone, your
computer, fax machines – even your basic landline.

And to add insult to injury, as radio and TV signals “go dark”, the attack may
happen without you ever knowing a thing about it. No warning. No prior
notification. Nothing.

Just like the terrorist attack on 9/11, the blackout would begin quietly, with only
a few substations “missing”.

Then, as more and more go offline... it would spread like wildfire. You could
wake up one morning without even knowing disaster has struck...

11 Chapter 2: The Imminent Fall of Big Energy

Just the Unsettling Feeling That
Something Isn’t Right.
It’s almost ironic when you think about it...

The media doesn’t talk about the cyber security threat because it’s not sexy, and
for many in the Western World – too complex.

After all, most people have a hard time understanding things like “NATO”, the
Cold War, and why the space race was so important.

But when the grid does finally power down, what do you think mainstream
media will want to report on the most? I can’t think of a more laughable
beginning to the “End of America” as we know it.

As for another source of light in the darkness:

Right now, you’re uniquely positioned to meet the coming threat of the Dark Age
prepped and ready, because...

You Now Hold True POWER In Your Hands

The power to eliminate the threat of imminent cyber attack – by providing
yourself and your family with an unlimited source of clean, reliable, always-
available energy.

See as a fellow patriot, I want you to be ready. Because here’s the cold, honest
truth...

Ukraine was simply the “first strike” of a cyber war.

And the more people out there who are armed with Dark Age Defense, the better
off we all are.

This issue is not about politics. It’s not about left or right – Democrats or
Republicans. No...

This is about your survival as an American... and the possibility of a terrorist

attack on our electric grid.

This is about staying one step ahead of the terrorists... and keeping America a
‘free’ and ‘fair’ and ‘safe’ country to live in.

Can I count on you?

Chapter 2: The Imminent Fall of Big Energy 12

Chapter 3
Surviving With The
Infinity Grid
Our society has become so dependent on electrical power that a prolonged
blackout could spell disaster for us as a people.

If the lights go out we can’t do anything to fix things, or even get a message to the
outside world.

Without power we would be forced to revert to a pre-modern lifestyle, relying

on farming and hunting for our food, and maybe even our survival would be at
stake.

A recent study found that families with children were 5 times more likely to go
without food in a blackout3.

And survey results from New York State found that nearly half of Americans
don’t know how to prepare for an extended outage4.

These are the kind of people that could die in the next Dark Age.

But for Many Americans... A Simple

Generator Might Not Be Enough
In the US, there are over 9 billion dollars’ worth of medical devices that use
electricity for their operation.

13 Chapter 3: Surviving With The Infinity Grid

What if a catastrophic event causes a loss of power to all hospitals? What about
police stations, fire houses, and any other location that uses emergency services?
For the unprepared, this could mean disaster.

But with a little preparation, you can minimize the risks of such an event. And,
because it doesn’t require a lot of equipment, even if you’re living in a city
apartment you can get into survival mode, and be prepared.

Surviving The Coming Dark Ages

In the past, many people have used gas-powered generators to get them through
a lengthy power outage. While these generators are generally quite dependable,
they aren’t always up to the task.

During a prolonged outage, a gas generator will require a large amount of fuel to
run.

If your generator dies in the middle of a blackout, you’ll be without power. And,
if you live in a remote location, you may not have easy access to fuel.

Luckily, there’s another way to generate power during an extended blackout. You
don’t need to rely on gas.

You can also use wind to keep your home powered. It may seem like a silly
solution, but a wind-powered generator is actually very efficient and reliable. The
best part?

These systems are very inexpensive, making them a good short-term emergency
power solution.

But you can’t use them in the long term. The materials will wear out over time,
and you’ll need to replace them regularly.

That’s why, out of all my backup generators...

Solar Is My Go-To Choice For

Long-term Sustainability
With solar, your home will be powered on and off by a solar panel system.

Only not all solar panels are created equal. And many are built using cheaply
manufactured solar cells.

Chapter 3: Surviving With The Infinity Grid 14

These systems often break down before consumers can pay them off.

But with the right solar cells — your can power your home for up to 40 years (or
more).

Plus, you can create a system that is virtually maintenance free..

Now, I’ll cover everything you need to know about solar in the next chapter.

But, what’s important here is that most backup generators have ONE thing in
common...

The “Battery Management” System

Or in other words... a good battery bank.

And these battery banks can come in all shapes and sizes. Some are as small as a
lunchbox, others are larger than an RV.

So let’s talk batteries for a second.

How many do you need?

What type should you use?

And what kind of batteries can you can build from scratch?

First Up — Lead Acid Batteries

These batteries are very inexpensive. They can cost around $30-$60 dollars for
a battery pack. However, they do have some limitations and disadvantages that
make them less ideal for some appliances.

For instance, they don’t have much of a shelf life. Lead acid batteries will lose
their capacity over time (even when stored in a cool environment).

Second Up — Ni-Cd Batteries

Ni-Cd batteries have the advantage of being able to be made larger, longer
lasting, and more energy dense than lead-acid batteries.

Their disadvantage is that they tend to be a little expensive. They also tend to be
quite sensitive to temperature.

15 Chapter 3: Surviving With The Infinity Grid

Finally, they aren’t ideal for electronics that require a lot of current. Ni-Cd
batteries usually need a charging circuit in order to work properly.

Third Up — Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium ion batteries are a more expensive alternative to the other two types of
batteries, but they have the biggest advantage of being rechargeable long-term.

They can be charged and discharged many times before losing any significant
capacity.

And some have been said to last up to 10 years or more... making them a great
choice for long-lasting solar panels.

Lithium Ion Is the Most Commonly Used

Battery On The Market Today
And here’s the kicker...

You can build your own 12V lithium ion batteries, using spare parts you may
have in your garage.

That’s right! It is possible to build an extremely high-quality lithium battery for

under $100.

I did this myself for my own Infinity Grid.

I built a battery similar to the one shown below and it has performed flawlessly
since:

Chapter 3: Surviving With The Infinity Grid 16

But if I’m being honest with you, I’m not concerned with its shelf life one bit.
Because...

I Built More Than One...

In fact, I’ve built dozens of over the past few months. Most of them are spread
throughout my house right now.

But the rest are in storage, waiting to be “switched out” the moment they’re
needed.

You see, I have backups FOR my backups. It’s something my father taught me
long ago.

He told me it was the only way to ensure peace of mind.

And I’m going to pass this knowledge onto you in the next few chapters.

You’re going to learn how to set up your own “Infinity Grid” of backup power...

With true plug-n-play simplicity. And it’ll make all the difference in the world
when disaster strikes.

So let’s get started... Join me in Chapter 4.

17 Chapter 3: Surviving With The Infinity Grid

Chapter 4
Capturing Energy from
the Sun
When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the local electrical grid was so
devastated, many homes were left without power for over a month.

The storm tore down thousands of miles of power lines, destroyed substations,
and closed power plants.

This left many people with no heat, light or freshwater. Thousands of people
died.

Solar power could have easily provided these desperate people with their basic
human needs... if they’d been able to access it.

But since the local grid was so damaged – BY LAW, all grid-connected solar
systems had to be shut down.

Which is why I will never, EVER suggest you install a big “gridlocked” solar
system.

Instead, focus on designing multiple “off-grid” systems that will give you with
the power you need when you need it most.

In this chapter, I’ll cover the basics of how to design a simple solar system that
will keep you “illuminated” for up to 40 years.

And in the process, you’ll discover how to create your own “solar grid” of backup
energy. So you can be ready for the dark days ahead.

Chapter 4: Capturing Energy from the Sun 18

How to Design an Off-Grid System
With Your Family In Mind
First, consider the needs of you and your family.

If you want to design and install your own solar power system, you should do
your homework first. Think about you and your family’s needs, rather than
trying to fit your idea into a pre-existing model.

Only then can you design a solar power system that will satisfy their
requirements. Plus, you’ll know exactly how to service your array without relying
on a solar company in a time of crisis.

How Much Energy You Will Need

Understanding how much energy you use is the most important thing to know
when building an off-grid solar system. You need to know exactly what it takes to
power your home, as well as the changes in energy usage throughout the year.

A renewable energy system will need to be flexible, and this requires a thorough
understanding of how the electricity from the panels is consumed by the family’s
devices.

The more you know about how your electricity is used, the better you’ll be
able to make decisions about how much capacity you need, where you should
locate your system, and how often you should replace batteries or perform
maintenance.

Measuring Your Home’s Energy Consumption

There are several ways you can measure your home’s energy consumption, but
you’ll get the most precise measurement by measuring it yourself.

What you need is an affordable “kill-a-watt” power meter for the appliances you
keep plugged in daily. You can get one of these on Amazon for around $32.

Now, the kill-a-watt will give you a bunch of different measurements, but you
just need to worry about ‘watts’ or ‘kilowatts’.

So start out by setting your meter to measure ‘Kilowatt Hours’. Then use one of
the following methods to get your measurements:

19 Chapter 4: Capturing Energy from the Sun

1. The 24-Hour Power Reading: Keep your kill-a-watt hooked up for 24
hours – that way you know how much energy the appliance uses in a full
day.

2. The 1-Hour Meter Reader: Pop the meter in for 1 hour, then multiply
the kWh by the number of hours you typically use the appliance.

3. The Instant Access Reading: If you need an instant read out, you can
check the watts your appliance is using, then multiply the watts by the
number of hours your appliance uses per day.

How To Calculate Your Daily Usage

Take all the devices you plan to use in a given day, and add up the kWh
measurements for each one. That’ll be your energy use per day.

But your energy usage fluctuates throughout the year, with some devices using
more power than others depending on the season. So if you want to account for
the differences between devices, you should take a power measurement in the
winter and summer.

If you only use a yearly average to plan for your system, it’s easy to buy WAY
MORE panels than you need.

The Perfect Spot for Your Panels

Then it’s time to find the perfect spot for your panels. The top of the house is the
most efficient place for solar installation, right? Not necessarily...

The top of your house can often be the least efficient place for solar panel
installation. You’ll want a spot that gives you proper access and passive cooling
for your panels, which can more than double their efficiency.

In terms of where you should put your panels, here’s what I can recommend:

• It’s All About The Angles

When your solar panels aren’t facing due south and they lack proper alignment,
you lose a lot of potential power. And if you’re like me, you probably don’t have
south-facing roof lines.

If you do, you’re lucky – most people don’t. So it can be difficult (and really

Chapter 4: Capturing Energy from the Sun 20

expensive) to place efficient solar panels on your roof.

• Try Different “Racking” Positions

Many off-grid homes use several solar panels to generate all the electricity they
need. And each panel is usually mounted on a separate racking system.
This keeps the panels at different angles that can be moved on hinges, so they
can get as much sun as possible during the day.

• Stay Outta the Shade

Shade reduces the efficiency of your panels by about 15%. And in some cases,
like next to a house or building, by up to 30%. Solar panels need as much direct
sunlight as possible, so make sure you pick a spot that gets at least 6 hours of
direct sun per day.

• Set Up Your Panels for Easy Access

Make sure you position your panels so you have easy access to them whenever
you need to service, clean, or replace them. This means, your panels should be
close to your home (preferably on the ground), so you won’t have to travel far
whenever you need to access them.

• Your Panels Appreciate a Cool Environment

Solar panels need a constant temperature to operate efficiently. If they get too
hot, they begin to degrade, and they start to lose power and efficiency.

So, it’s important to make sure you provide your solar panels with a consistent,
comfortable environment.

A good way to give them as much air circulation as possible is to make sure
there’s at least 6″ of clearance behind each solar panel where air can flow freely
to keep the panel cool.

What Size Should Your Off-Grid System Be?

The solar power system you buy or build yourself should be able to handle your
energy needs through both winter and summer months...

Meaning you’ll produce more power than you can actually use throughout most
of the year.

You should also consider the fact that solar systems are not 100% efficient. It’s

21 Chapter 4: Capturing Energy from the Sun

a lot of “work” for your system to capture solar power through your panels and
transform it into AC electricity. So even with perfect panels, installation, and
operation, you will still have some energy loss.
Now you’ll find that most off-grid solar systems will operate at 70% efficiency.
So to calculate how many kilowatts of power an average system will need to
generate every month to account for the 30% loss… Divide your total energy
needs by 0.7 (the efficiency of most systems).

Battery Bank Not Included...

That’s right, your solar energy can’t just travel directly from space and straight
into your home...

You need a “middle man” – a battery bank, where you can store virtually
UNLIMITED amounts of power for immediate (or future) use.

Now, your battery bank needs to be located in a place where it will get good
ventilation, and stay cool in extreme temperatures.

In colder climates, you should insulate the outside of the building as best you
can.

In warmer climates, you may want to install it next to a window to allow better
ventilation.

But, if you use more expensive sealed batteries, you mainly need to worry about
temperature control. Sealed batteries don’t leak hydrogen gas when charging
like unsealed batteries, requiring less ventilation.

Regardless of which you choose, it’s wise to include safety shutoffs, fuses, and
breakers for your battery bank in your setup.

A Warning About Battery Capacity

Like I said – with no battery, no power... especially at night.
But that doesn’t mean your battery bank should only hold a 12 kWh charge...

Rather, it should be large enough to hold a full day’s charge – specifically a cold
winter day.

So let’s say your system can produce 2 kWh on a winter day, then you should
make sure your battery bank can hold at least that much.

Chapter 4: Capturing Energy from the Sun 22

Now, many lead acid batteries (including “deep cycle” batteries) should never
be discharged to less than 50% capacity. That’s because most batteries have a
limited “discharge depth” – the amount of charge they can lose before they’re
damaged.

For that reason, I suggest a Lithium Battery Bank. Sure, it’s much more
expensive up front. But it’s a lower cost option for the long-term.

For one – lithium batteries have an average lifespan of three years. And
secondly, they’ve got a wide open 80% discharge depth, so your home can draw
more power in emergencies before hitting the “Danger Zone”.

My Top 10 List of Solar Components

By now you should have an idea of how much power your site will need to By
now you should have an idea of how much power your site will need to generate
after choosing the placement of your panels.

From here, you can start ordering the components that are right for your system,
and there are a TON of options out there...

So to help you “cut through the noise” – I put together a short list of items my
system couldn’t do without:

1. Pure Sine Wave Inverter

In order to turn DC power into AC electricity, your solar panels need to be wired
up to an inverter. It’s the best option to have a pure sine wave inverter.

It produces very little heat, and it eliminates the possibility of overloading your
home’s electrical system, which can cause blackouts and fire.

2. MPPT Charge Controller

When choosing an MPPT charge controller, make sure the output voltage is the
same size (or bigger) than your battery bank voltage. Then for the input, choose
whatever voltage you’re going to run your panels at.

3. Mono-Crystalline Solar Panels

Whether you’re building a large system or a portable generator, mono-crystalline

panels are going to be your best bet. Not only do mono-crystalline panels

23 Chapter 4: Capturing Energy from the Sun

produce 50-69% more power… they also last twice as long as commercial poly-
crystalline cells.

4. Lithium Ion Battery Bank

The wrong battery bank could mean the difference between life and death. And
when it comes to the lives of your wife and kids, wouldn’t you want the battery
that ensures you can power through the coming dark winter? If you ask me, the
up-front investment just makes sense.

5. Solar-Rated Copper Wire

The thinner the wire, the cheaper it is, because copper cables are expensive and
sold by weight. So first, determine how many amps your system produces.

Second, measure the distance between your panels and your charge controller.
Then finally, use the chart above to determine the gauge of wire you’ll need.

6. MC4 Connectors

MC4 connectors are waterproof and are an easy means of wiring up your panels.
They also come pre-installed on many standard solar panels, so you have the
option to buy pre-made cables. That being said – it’s cheaper to buy the wire
yourself and create your own MC4 connections than to use pre-made cables.

7. Battery Management System

A lithium ion battery bank with multiple batteries wired in series (positive to
negative) should be connected to a Battery Management System. This will ensure
they never go above or below their rated voltage, which can be very dangerous.

8. Under Voltage Disconnect

If you’re going with lithium ion batteries, then you should have a discharge
depth of 80%. But if your batteries drain any lower than that, it could mean

Chapter 4: Capturing Energy from the Sun 24

instant death to your power storage. So make sure your charge controller comes
with a battery disconnect feature included.

9. Fuses for Safety

Fuses in your solar system are like circuit breakers for grid-connected electricity,
and are essential to your safety. When too much power is drawn, potentially
overheating your system, fuses will disconnect the power (and possibly keep you
alive).

10. Misc Connectors

A lot of solar equipment comes with wire and clamp connection points. So it’s
wise to pick up some battery terminal clamps or copper bus bars, depending on
your batteries.

By now, I’m sure you realize:

Adding Solar Power to Your Arsenal

Should Be a No-Brainer
Because the truth is...

A national blackout is coming. It could happen tomorrow, or it could happen 10

months from now, but it is going to happen.

What would you do? How can you prepare for the coming crisis? These are
important questions.

Unfortunately, the answers aren’t as simple.

But if you have a home that uses a lot of electricity, and your family’s livelihood
would be severely impacted by a prolonged blackout… then I suggest you give
solar power some serious thought.

I honestly believe that for many Americans, one of the best ways to survive a
prolonged blackout is to have a few backup generators on hand.

Chapter 5
When the Gas Runs Out
“What if the gas runs out?” is one of the BIG questions you see new preppers ask
all the time.

Let me tell you something:

If you are serious about surviving a disaster situation, you will learn to do with
less. You’ll make due with what you have.

Cause here’s the reality:

• Fuel becomes scarce in a nationwide panic. A lot of people are

going to rush to get gasoline and other types of portable fuel-based energy
sources to keep themselves warm and operate their appliances.

• Lawless actions will take place to acquire fuel. And others will
take advantage of the situation by looting and stealing (ex. the mobs of
“peaceful protesters” in 2020). These lawless acts will exacerbate the
problem and lead to even more chaos.

• Your community will become a ghost town. Your neighbors will

hunker down at home, afraid to go anywhere... even to get the food they
need to survive.

• Businesses will close. That is... if they’re still open. And without
transportation, goods will stop arriving at the docks and stores.

• At some point – they’ll call in the National Guard. But at that point, how
much good will it do? How much “order” will it actually restore?

We’ll See the Entire Country

Death-Spiral Into Dark Future
And the preppers who put their hopes and dreams into a gas-powered generator
will be S.O.L... Unless they have stockpiles of natural gas.

The problem is – you can’t really save gas without it going bad, and eventually

Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out 26

it’ll just lose it’s power.

But what if that gas-guzzlin’ generator didn’t need gasoline at all? What if you
could use an efficient fuel source with a longer shelf-life instead?

Thank The Lord for Propane Gas!

That’s right – you can use propane to power those stubborn gas generators... but
it takes a little work on your part.

And if you’re anything like me, it’s nothing you can’t handle.

But fair warning – if you’re not a licensed or trained electrician, you may want to
consider hiring one for this job. But if you’re okay accepting the risk involved (we
are playing with gasoline after all)...

Then I want to give you a handy, step-by-step guide I put together through my
research on how to convert your old gas generator to accept propane fuel.

The 5 Benefits of ‘Propane’ Generators

See, regardless of whether you stay in civilization or go off-grid, converting your
generator to accept propane just makes sense. Here’s why:

1. It Practically Lasts FOREVER

Unlike gasoline, which has a shelf-life of about 3 months5... propane lasts
indefinitely – no gas treatments, additives, or refrigeration needed. Plus,
propane is WAY less volatile when stored in doors.

2. It Can Sit Undisturbed for Months

Propane doesn’t degrade like gasoline does. This means your generator can sit
for long periods of time without having to be refueled and “exercised”. It also
allows you to use a smaller, lighter fuel tank which reduces the time it takes to
refuel.

27 Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out

3. Propane Is a “Cleaner” Fuel
Propane is a much cleaner-burning fuel than gasoline. It burns hotter, which
means it delivers more power for your generator. Plus, propane emits less
carbon dioxide than gasoline or diesel fuel, so it burns cleaner.

4. It’s Dirt Cheap

Well maybe that depends on your definition of “cheap” – but it sure as hell beats
the price of gas! If you think the price at the pumps is high now... talk to me
when there’s a country-wide shortage.

5. No Fumes – Easy to Store

Unlike storing gas, you have no toxic fumes endangering your health if you need
to store propane indoors. It also makes the physical generator itself much easier
to store inside for safe-keeping. Though it goes without saying, you should never
run your generator inside.

Converting Your Generator for

Propane Use
Now that you understand the benefits of using propane instead of gasoline, let’s
get down to business: How do you actually do it?

For this step-by-step breakdown, I’ll be referencing the Honda EU2200i

generator.

Now you could buy all the parts separately if you really wanted, but why bother
when there are plenty of DIY propane conversion kits to choose from. So I’ll be
referencing the Hutch Mountain Generator Conversion Kit.

Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out 28

This kit comes with everything you need (except the tools), so the entire project
is relatively simple...

You’ll need:

• A Power Drill
• A Step Drill Bit
• A Basic Pilot Bit
• A Socket Wrench with an 8mm Bit
• Your Handy-Dandy Phillips Screwdriver
• Two Crescent Wrenches
• A 16mm Wrench
• One Marker
• One Roll of Tape

Propane Generator Conversion in 9 Steps

Step 1: Remove the front engine cover.

Step 2: Use a strip of tape to create a “line” from the plastic generator case to
the air filter.

29 Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out

Step 3: Mark your hole, and start drilling with the pilot bit before increasing it
9/16” using your step bit.

Step 4: Remove the air filter cover, followed by the three nuts holding the air
filter assembly together.

Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out 30

Step 5: Use the instructions in your kit to install the new propane line via the
hole you drilled. Don’t forget your washers! Then place on the ‘elbow’ and ‘quick
connect’ fittings. Tighten with the two crescent wrenches.

31 Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out

Step 6: Using the included gaskets and propane fitting, take the other end of the
new propane line and connect it to the carburetor (running it behind the ‘pink’
hoses if converting a Honda EU2200i).

Step 7: Replace the air filter assembly with a spacer included in your kit.

Step 8: Pop the air filter and engine cover back on.

Step 9: Replace the ‘Factory Operating’ sticker with the sticker from your Hutch
Mountain kit.

Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out 32

Important Next Steps
Now once you’re done converting your generator, you’ll want to make sure you
“bleed” all the gas from the lines (unless you bought your generator new).

When you’re ready, attach your regulator and prime, then check for any leaks,
and you’re golden.

Well done!

Easy Off-Grid Livin’

You see, with just nine easy steps, you converted your generator from gasoline to
run on propane. So you now have a compact, efficient, and light-weight source of
backup power, that also has no toxic fumes.

Pretty cool, right?

You can even use this portable generator to charge your solar battery bank on
days with little-to-no sun.

And while it may not pump out as much power as solar panels, it’s enough to top
you off in emergencies.

There’s only one catch:

You Can’t Safely Use Propane

Generators Indoors
Trust me when I tell you this generator can be deadly if run indoors.

Sure, the propane is sealed in a steel tank...

But one small leak could send toxic carbon monoxide into the air. And you don’t
want these fumes anywhere near you or your family.

This goes double for all gas-powered generators, too.

33 Chapter 5: When the Gas Runs Out

Did You Know Gas-Powered Generators Can Emit
As Much Carbon Monoxide As 450 Cars?
In fact, generator fumes kill an average of 70 people in the U.S. each year. And
injure thousands more.

So be sure to only run your gas or propane-powered generator outside with

plenty of ventilation.

If You Want To Keep Your Family

Safe From Toxic Gas Fumes
Then there’s really only one choice for safe power generation:

The Infinity Grid.

But building your own Infinity Grid doesn’t come without risk. So in the next
chapter, we’ll go over some of the risks involved in building the Infinity Grid.

I want you to have a full grasp of what goes into making the Infinity Grid safe
and effective so that you can take control of your home power supply.

Chapter 6
Consider The Risks
Before Building Your Own
Infinity Grid
“The biggest threat to freedom is apathy.”

-Abraham Lincoln

Regarding the Infinity Grid, this statement could not be more accurate.

Not only do you have to worry about building one to fit your needs, but you also
need to consider the hazards of building your own.

In this chapter, we will outline the risks of building the Infinity Grid and the
precautions that can be taken to ensure you don’t get burned when building
yours.

Can You Build Your Own Infinity Grid?

It’s no secret that many people fear building their own with battery cells.

Most of us probably know someone who tried building their own battery and got
burned or damaged their electronics.

These stories used to scare people, and they still do.

Why?

Because of the risks involved.

But before we discuss any risks, let’s discuss the reward:

35 Chapter 6: Consider The Risks Before Building Your Own Infinity Grid
What’s So Great About Lithium Ion?
A lithium ion battery, also known as a Li-on battery, is one of the most potent
types of batteries you can use to power any device that uses electricity.

It has a long shelf life and a high capacity, making it great for powering devices
such as mobile phones, cameras, CPAP machines, and even drones.

Lithium batteries have revolutionized our world, because their high energy
density allows us to pack a great deal of power into small spaces.

In addition, they can produce more power overall because they are less
susceptible to the Peukert Effect than lead-acid batteries.

NOTE: Peukert Effect: When a battery discharge rate is too high, and creates
a “voltage sag” that ultimately shortens the battery lifespan.

When Building The Infinity Grid, There Are

A Few Things You Need To Consider:
• Do you have any experience with Li-on batteries?
• How will you charge the Infinity Grid?
• Will you connect it directly to the device, or do you have any safety
precautions in place?
• Do you plan to use Li-on cells?
• Are you going to make multiple power packs?
• What is the capacity of the cells?
• Will you add protection circuits to prevent overcharging and shorting?
• Can you find a reliable manufacturer of high-quality Li-on battery cells?

In other words, you must comprehend how the battery operates and the function
of each cell.

Otherwise, you’ll end up with the following risks:

1. If The Infinity Grid Isn’t Built Correctly, It Could Cause

Serious Injury to the Person Using It

If you are building an Infinity Grid, you should do the following:

• Be careful and wear gloves since you may be exposed to many harmful
materials and chemicals.

Chapter 6: Consider The Risks Before Building Your Own Infinity Grid 36
• Don’t let the Infinity Grid get too hot or too cold. Or stay outside in the sun
too long.
• If it’s outside or in storage, you should cover it to protect it from the rain.
• Ensure that it is placed in a safe location so that children or pets cannot
access it.
• Do not use the DIY lithium-ion battery near any sources of heat or
moisture. If it gets damaged, it could cause you to get hurt.

2. Li-ion Batteries Can Be Flammable and Dangerous

They can cause fire and burn the skin. Even if they don’t cause a fire, they could
cause chemical burns.

If a person handles a Li-on battery cell, they should wear protective gloves and
avoid touching the battery directly. If you become a “conduction point” between
the battery’s positive and negative electrodes, you could get injured.

Before using the Li-on cell, look at the manufacturer’s instruction manual, and
follow the safety instructions on the packaging.

3. Li-on Batteries and Water Don’t Mix

Li-on batteries are not waterproof.

So if you put them in water, you could end up electrocuting yourself.

Be careful when using these batteries near any kinds of fluids, or they can
explode and cause serious injury. Even though making them easy, you should
use them responsibly.

4. Chemical Burns Are Nasty

Li-ion batteries are not as dangerous as lead-acid batteries. But they are still
made up of several different types of chemicals.

When you use a lithium-ion battery, you need to be careful not to get any of
the chemicals on you. They can cause nasty chemical burns that may leave you
permanantly scarred.

So consider the risks of chemical burns.

37 Chapter 6: Consider The Risks Before Building Your Own Infinity Grid
5. If Your Battery Is Leaking — STOP!

Battery cells are so cheap these days, that trying to salvage a “leaky” battery just
isn’t worth it.

The good news is, your battery is usually only leaking one of the cells. So wearing
gloves, all you have to do is go ahead and change out the bad cell for a new one.

6. Make Sure to Store Your Infinity Grid Correctly

Make sure you store the Infinity Grid where it doesn’t get hit by any moving
object or an object falling from above.

Also, ensure you don’t use it in a scorching environment, like in direct sunlight.

This will shorten the battery’s lifespan. It may even cause it to overheat.

Finally, it’s important you don’t let your battery sit for too long without charging.

Every battery system can drain over time when not in use — and lithium ion
batteries are no different.

Just like you use good FIFO (first in first out) when storing food, make sure you
FIFO your battery packs to make sure they’re always charged.

You Need To Know What You’re Doing

To construct your Infinity Grid, you must be competent. You do not need to be
an expert, but you must understand the fundamentals.

Do you require knowledge of chemistry? There are many YouTube videos in

which the speaker states, “I’ve studied chemistry,” and you feel slightly confused.

In brief: No, not really. You must know a few fundamentals, but that’s about it.

To have the best experience possible with a particular device, you must know
how to use it.

Chapter 6: Consider The Risks Before Building Your Own Infinity Grid 38
So, if you’re new to something, you should learn all you can about that device.

That means spending time reading about it. This way, you can get a good idea of
what the device does, how it works, and how to use it properly.

Don’t worry, this book will lay out everything–step by step.

39 Chapter 6: Consider The Risks Before Building Your Own Infinity Grid
Chapter 7
The Infinity Grid Build
The grid is old, brittle and vulnerable to failure.

Quite frankly — it’s a mess. A tangled mass of power lines with little redundancy
built into the system.

In a matter of days, or even hours, it could be that every major city on the planet
would go dark, plunging civilization into darkness, chaos, and anarchy.

The answer is simple:

Your Infinity Grid could give you a self-sustaining, self-replenishing backup

power grid.

With enough backup power, you can survive even the most catastrophic of
blackouts.

It’s not about HOW you charge your Infinity Grid — whether it’s with solar
panels, wind turbines, or any other energy sources.

It’s about having the capacity to create your own power, and having the
technology in place utilize it no matter what.

Why Li-on Batteries Are So Energy Dense

Li-on batteries store up to about three times more power per volume than nickel
cadmium or nickel metal hydride batteries, making them great for backup power
sources.

Most lithium ion batteries are made of four components:

They contain a Lithium Cobalt Oxide Cathode (positive side), which is the part
that stores the electrons and is also responsible for releasing them when needed.

The second component is a Lithium Anode (negative side), which contains

lithium metal.

Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build 40

The third component is Electrolytes, which allows ions to move from the positive
to the negative side.

Finally, the fourth component is the separator – this is just the space between
the lithium cobalt oxide cathode and the lithium metal anode.

NOTE: While these are the 4 most important components of a lithium ion
battery, the chemistry is far more complicated, and there are many more
chemical reactions that are taking place.

What You Will Need To Build The Infinity Grid

In order to make your first Infinity Grid, you’re going to need few items. Below
is a list to help you build a 12V battery with 17 amp hours (Ah), 200 watt hours
(Wh).

Each battery cell in the build has a rating of 3.7 volts (4.2V when fully charged).

And by lining up 3 rows of 5 cells each — in a special wiring pattern — you can
get up to 17Ah (200Wh) of continuous current...

That’s enough to power your cell phone, laptop, lights... or even a CPAP machine
in a blackout.

And here’s what you’ll need:

• 15X 18650 Li-on Battery Cells OEM 3.7V (You can find these for as cheap
as $1.65 a piece)
• BMS (Battery Management System for charging the Infinity Grid — $9.99)
• 2M 0.15x5mm Nickel Plated ($8.99)
• 3.7V/7.4V /11.1V/14.8V Li-po Battery Indicator Display ($6.99)
• 250V 6A Steel Boat Rocker Switch ($3.70)
• 3A 12v for DC Power Supply Jack Socket ($0.17)
• M3 x 10mm Flat Head Screws ($4.50)
• 18650 Battery Pack Spacers (Enough to hold a total of 15 batteries — $1.05
each)
• 100-240V 12.6V 2A 16.8V 2A 2000mA Li-on Charger ($2.69)

TOTAL: $62.83!

NOTE: Even though you can find cheap battery cells on sites like Aliexpress.
com — investing a little more in US brands will lower your risk of buying
dead, damaged, or even DANGEROUS battery cells.

41 Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build

Here are the tools you’ll need for the build:

• 709A 3.2kw Spot Welder ($250)

• 3D Printer (Optional for printing a battery case)
• Wire Cutters ($17.00)
• Electrical Gloves ($16.00)
• Safety Goggles ($6.99)
• Multimeter ($19.00)
• Li-on 4x Battery Cell Charger (For making sure each battery cell is fully
charged before assembly)

Steps To Build The Infinity Grid

Before we begin, however, it is important to note that the terms “batteries” and
“cells” are not synonymous.

Although they are sometimes used interchangeably, they have distinct

meanings. A battery can consist of numerous cells, which are the energy-storing
components of the battery.

You may also wonder why the 18650 battery is named as such. Well, it refers to
the battery’s dimensions: 18 mm by 65 mm! (The “0” has no significance.)

So, now that we’ve covered all that information, here are the steps you need to
take to create your own Infinity Grid.

STEP 1: Discover How to Connect the Battery Cells

Nickel strips are used to connect battery cells.

Pure nickel strips are superior than their nickel-plated counterparts due to their
reduced resistance.

This is essential for ensuring that your battery pack generates less heat during
charging cycles, making it safer to use and extending its lifespan.

Check the voltages of each cell prior to combining them.

Because you will be connecting them in parallel, the cells’ voltages must be the
same so that a large current from one cell does not reach a cell with a lower

Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build 42

voltage and cause it to be damaged.

This is particularly crucial if you’re utilizing old batteries that you’ve removed
from a device. Ensure that each battery cell has the same voltage by fully
charging the batteries.

STEP 2: Beware of “Voltage Shock”

The manner in which the battery cells are connected guarantees that they reach
the correct capacity (measured in mAh) and voltage.

With the setup outlined in this book, each battery cell is rated at 3400mAh. Now,
the nominal voltage for this Infinity Grid is 3.7...

But when fully charged, they can reach 4.2V — totaling over 12V for the Infinity
Grid.

STEP 3: Assembling The Infinity Grid

Now, your Infinity Grid must contain three groups of five cells each, with a total
of fifteen cells.

Therefore, organize your 15 cells so that you can create an electrical connection
between them and the nickel strips. This is where Battery Pack Spacers come in
handy.

You’ll want to place a space on both the tops and bottoms of your cells.

The 1st row of five cells should be placed with the positive side facing up,
followed by the 2nd (middle) row with negative side up. And finally, the 3rd row
with positive side up.

STEP 4: Slice Your Nickel Strip

For this step, we’re going to be creating series AND parallel connections.

Place your nickel-plated strips on top of the first row of five cells.

It must cover all cell terminals and leave a 10mm overhang for connecting the
cells to the BMS later on. Cut 10 of these strips.

Then lay your nickel strip along two cells from the middle (2nd) row to the third
row. Cut 10 of these smaller strips.

43 Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build

STEP 5: Spot-weld the Stripe Ends

Here’s where it gets a little tricky:

First, lay the long strips along the positive and negative terminals of the 1st and
3rd rows.

Now, when spot welding your strips — before pressing the foot switch, the
welder must be pressed on the battery terminal and nickel strip.

So weld your nickel strip to the 1st and 3rd terminal rows, on both the top and
bottom (4 total strips). Be sure to leave the 10mm overhang off to one side of the
battery bank.

NOTE: For an image of how this should look - refer to the image at the end
of these steps.

Then, flip the batteries over until the 1st terminal row is ‘negative’ side up. Spot
weld each negative terminal of the 1st row to the positive terminal of the 2nd.

Finally, flip the batteries over with the 2nd terminal row ‘negative’ side up. Then
repeat the process of connecting each negative terminal on the 2nd row to the
positive terminal of the 3rd.

Not certain whether it was welded correctly?

Pull on the nickel strips. If it detaches readily, it must be fused again, but this
time with a stronger current.

Always wear safety goggles and protective gloves during spot welding since spot
welders generate a great deal of heat and you don’t want to get burned.

STEP 6: Connect Your BMS

Your battery management system (BMS) is essential because it checks the cells
to ensure that they have the correct voltage and also monitors the charging and
discharging of the battery pack.

To verify that your BMS meets the requirements of this battery pack, you
must ensure that it meets the following criteria: The voltage range should be
4.25~4.35V ±0.05 volts. It should operate at a maximum current of 0~25A.

To connect your BMS to your battery pack, you must note the BMS’s B-, B1, B2,
and B+ soldering pads.

Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build 44

Connect the negative terminal of the 1st row of cells to the B- and the positive
terminal to the B1.

Then, the next group’s negative terminal must be connected to the B2 and its
positive terminal must be attached to the B+.

Simply spot weld the BMS to the nickel strips to join them.

NOTE: Refer to the image at the end of these steps.

STEP 7: Attach the Wiring

You must wire your battery pack such that there are two terminals: one for
connecting the load and one for charging the battery.

However, you can also attach the battery level indicator if you so choose. This is
a fantastic addition to the final result.

In this phase, you will need a 5mm DC jack for the input and output, as well as a
3S battery level indicator. Also required is the rocker switch.

To connect all the wires, proceed as follows:

1. Initially, solder the red wire from your rocker switch and DC connector to
the P+ terminal on the BMS.

2. Then, attach the negative wires of the DC jack and the battery level
indicator to the BMS P-.

3. Utilize some hot glue at the base of the battery shell to bind the associated
wires.

4. Use your M3 x 10mm screws to secure the lid in place and protect the
battery pack.

45 Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build

In the end, it should look something like this:

STEP 8: Protect Your Connections From Short Circuits

Utilizing a 3D printer, this is an optional step you might take to produce a

container or enclosure for your battery pack.

Due to the fact that your nickel strips are exposed, you must find a solution to
cover them so that they do not short.

If you do not wish to construct your own enclosure, you can purchase one,
however, you must ensure that it will fit.

AliExpress carries several battery casings for 18650 battery packs.

STEP 9: Charge Your Battery Pack

You have successfully completed these instructions on how to manufacture your

own lithium battery pack!

The only remaining step is to charge the battery pack using a 12.6 DC adapter.

After charging, it is ready for use!

Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build 46

Building A BIGGER Infinity Grid
The great thing about this method of series and parallel wiring is you can use it
to build a BIGGER Infinity Grid to fit your family’s needs.

Most battery management systems are wired the same, but the charging and
load outlets will change.

Also, with bigger, more powerful batteries, you’ll want to add a few more safety
components like fuses, circuit protectors, and thermal cut-offs.

You also may want to experiment with a larger BMS. And a larger BMS may have
an additional JST port.

This port is for what’s called a Battery Wiring Harness. These can range from
2-pronged to 30-pronged, depending on the size of your battery, and how much
current you want running through it.

The guide in this book uses a classic 2-pronged approach:

47 Chapter 7: The Infinity Grid Build

But a larger Infinity Grid needs a larger BMS, therefore its BMS may look more

For Small builds, you’ll probably want to stick with the classic 18650 cell-type.

But if you want to “go big” — look for 21700 cell-types.

The 21700s are a bit bigger, but aren’t much more expensive than 18650s.

They have higher voltage, and a higher current capacity (which means they
charge faster). So if you can get them, it’s worth it.

The best part is — you can buy these batteries in bulk for super cheap. This’ll let
you buy a bunch of cells for pennies on the dollar — perfect if you’re looking to
make multiple Infinity Grids at once.

The nickel strips are wired similarly here — with parallel strips connecting each
cell row in series:

These connections in your Infinity Grid help the current “snake” around through
the individual cells like this:

Troubleshooting The
Infinity Grid
With the advancement of technology, the gadgets that we use on a daily basis are
becoming more portable, requiring the use of rechargeable batteries.

Lithium batteries are becoming increasingly popular in electronic devices such

as smartphones, laptops, and tablets because of their longevity. They can last up
to two to five years.

However, lithium battery packs can malfunction due to faults. The nature of the
issue will depend on the battery pack’s construction, how it is charged, how it is
used and handled, and environmental circumstances.

Short Circuits in the Battery Cell

A lithium battery pack catching fire in a smartphone, laptop, or other electronic
device is one of the most frequently reported problems in the news.

Minor short circuits often result in the lithium battery self-discharging without
a big explosion or combustion, however major short circuits can lead to more
severe negative outcomes. They arise when metal particles collect in a particular
location.

As it generates heat, a large amount of current flows between the negative and
positive plates. As the temperature rises, the insulation may begin to erode; this
phenomenon is known as Thermal Runaway.

When producing complicated assemblies that generate a substantial amount

of metallic dust, the presence of metallic particles is often an issue. Having
quality control procedures and using clean rooms to reduce the amount of dust
produced can prevent this type of failure.

Damage And Leakage
During the shipping and transit process as well as when end users handle the
battery packs, puncture and leakage can occur. If a battery comes into contact
with sharp objects, is dropped, or is subjected to other mechanical pressures, it
can be punctured.

It is possible that the puncture will allow electrolyte to flow from the battery.

The quantity of leaking depends on the size of the battery pack and the number
of batteries that have been punctured, as smaller cell pouch may only leak a
small amount. There are leaks and punctures that can be hazardous.

Users who experience electrolyte leakage must take the required precautions to
avoid coming into touch with the liquid or electrolyte residue. Electronics that
come into touch with electrolyte leaks are likewise susceptible to short circuiting.

Battery Pack Enlargement

When you see your battery pack start to expand, watch out. This issue is caused
by the expansion of the lithium battery. There are a variety of causes causing
swelling.

For example, the battery pack may have been exposed to moisture. Overcharging
is another typical cause of battery pack expansion.

Additionally, aging might cause the battery pack to swell. The battery pack might
cause an increase in temperature as it ages.

The most effective technique to prevent battery pack swelling is to prevent the
battery from getting wet and to refrain from repeatedly charging the battery.

Constant battery charging can hasten the battery’s degeneration.

Charger Problems
Using the wrong charger for the lithium battery pack might potentially result in a
variety of issues. The majority of lithium-ion battery pack chargers are intended
to avoid overcharging.

However, using the incorrect charger might result in overcharging or overvoltage

as well as swelling of the lithium battery pack.

53 Chapter 8: Troubleshooting The Infinity Grid

Additionally, lithium battery packs should never be charged at temperatures
below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Charging at this temperature can cause lithium plating (this is when the lithium-
ion collects along the anode’s surface as metallic lithium becomes deposited
there).

This plating is permanent and cannot be removed. When this happens, the
battery becomes more susceptible to damage, such as rapid charging that can
cause short circuits. It is also more susceptible to crushing and impact damage.

Over-Discharge
Those that utilize lithium battery packs must be mindful of both overcharging
and overdischarge.

Lithium-ion battery chemistries should never have the voltage fall below 2 volts.

This issue can occur if the battery is stored for an extended period of time or if it
is depleted excessively.

When the voltage falls below 2 volts, the cathode and anode begin to degrade.

The anode current collector will start to dissolve, as the copper dissolves into the
electrolyte. When the battery is charged beyond 2 volts, the copper ions begin to
precipitate into copper metal, which might produce a short circuit.

In the meantime, the cathode begins to emit oxygen; after a few cycles, the
battery will begin to face permanent capacity loss.

Infinity Grid Not Working Properly?

Check the cell’s capacity and voltage.

When the battery is fully charged, the capacity and voltage should be the same,
otherwise the battery is failing.

NOTE: Capacity refers to how many milliamp hours (mAh) the battery can
hold. Voltage refers to how much energy a battery is capable of delivering.

“Recycling” Old Lithium Ion Batteries
For people who want to save money and may already have a few old Li-on
batteries in their garage, you can “recycle” these batteries into a new Infinity
Grid.

But first you need to check if the battery can even be salvaged.

To do that — grab a multimeter and test the current voltage of your battery.
If it’s below it’s ‘over-discharge voltage’ (typically around 2.7V)... your battery
may be toast. Anything battery below 2V might as well be a paper weight.

Chapter 9
How To EMP-Proof Your
Appliances
You probably already know about the EMP threat.

An Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is a brief but powerful pulse of electromagnetic

energy. And they can be caused by high-altitude nuclear bursts.

If such a pulse strikes America, it would be capable of destroying modern

electrical systems across the US - affecting large-scale communication, and
disabling many electronics...

Including transportation, medical care, and food and water supplies.

You’ve probably also heard about “Faraday cages”.

They’re a basic concept used to protect against EMPs and other threats — like
the one used in the movie “The Core” to shield astronauts from radiation.

But, it turns out you can make your own faraday cage to help protect your home
and family.

I found this out when I made my own home-built EMP protection system.

I had to build a couple different kinds of Faraday cages for my family, and I
learned so much while doing it.

In fact, I was able to use those lessons to design and build the “Escape Pod” that
will protect my family’s electronics during an EMP emergency.

So here’s what I did…

How to Build a Faraday Cage That Will Protect

Your Family’s Electronics From EMP Attacks
A “faraday cage” is a simple building concept that was first introduced in 1836.
It’s been around for over 150 years. But despite its simplicity, it has many uses.

Chapter 9: How To EMP-Proof Your Appliances 56

The most common use is as a tool for protecting against EMPs and nuclear
explosions.

And they work on a simple principle…

The inside of the cage conducts electricity while the outside redistributes the
electric field.

This creates a “polar opposite” magnetic effect that repels the electrons outside
the cage, leaving them unable to penetrate.

Faraday cages range in size from as small as an aluminum canister to a building-

sized structure. And they can stop an EMP blast within meters of the electronics
within.

The faraday cage outlined below is super easy to build and big enough to drop
your bugout bag in to shield your emergency devices.

1. Find Your Container

Next time you make a run to Home Depot, pick up an old school “galvanized”
metal trash can and lid.

These trash cans are the perfect size for stockpiled electronics and on their own
will give you around 50 dB “attenuation” (or reduction) in EMP current.

For context, the US Government recommends 80 dB attenuation for large-scale

protection. So I’ll show you how to bump up your attenuation in a moment.

But next up...

2. Insulate Your Faraday Container

You can insulate your Faraday cage with nearly anything, but it’s important you
do so your devices don’t touch the aluminum.

What I find best is to use cardboard here, but in all honesty you could use a
heavy-duty plastic bag.

Whatever you choose, just make sure there is no exposed aluminum inside the can.

Tip - A common misconception is that faraday cages have to be grounded. You

can ground them, but it’s not required. Grounding your cage will “pour” the
collected charge into the ground, while an ungrounded cage will simply hold the

57 Chapter 9: How To EMP-Proof Your Appliances

charge in place for a second until it dissipates.

3. Boost Your dB Attenuation

Boosting attenuation is all about getting a good seal between your lid and can.

Newer cans might already have a great fit. But older cans might have a few dents.

So using a good conductive material to bring the two as close as possible is key.

Most often, you’ll want to use a good copper foil tape with conductive adhesive.

Just “work” the tape around the inside-perimeter of the lid so that the lip of the
can rests firmly on the tape.

Once your electronics and supplies are inside the can, you can then make a
complete “seal” with the tape around the can/lid gap for even more attenuation.

This Simple Faraday Cage Could Save Your Life

A majority of Americans probably aren’t as concerned about an EMP attack as
they should be.

Let’s face it, the MSM hardly mentions the risk of EMPs and there aren’t any
Hollywood blockbusters about the power going out.

That’s what makes an EMP even more dangerous.

Because no one would know what to do, or what to expect, in the weeks (or
months) to come.

The country could go dark for years.

But with your own faraday cage, devices like emergency radios, batteries,
charging ports, hot plates, hand-held GPS systems and many more will all be
protected.

You’d be able to provide for your family in a situation that most people wouldn’t
be able to survive.

So if you’re worried about EMP, start building a Faraday cage today.

The first step to a safer future is simply to be prepared.
