Introduction
As technology continues its rapid development, most of the people have
relied ongadgets a lot. Since mobile phones are the most portable among all the gadgets its
technologyhas spread around the globe. According to Pew Research (2010), a mobile phone is a
gadgetthat can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving
around a widegeographic area. It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a
mobile phoneoperator, allowing access to the public telephone network. In addition,
modern phones alsosupport wide range variety of other services such as text messaging,
MMS, e-mail, internetaccess, short range wireless communications (Infrared, Bluetooth),
business applications, gamingand photography. Mobile technology has connected each country
and people in an easier way as it is thefastest way to send a message. Formerly, it only
functioned as a portable mean of communication. As years passed, mobile phones become
everybody’s addiction as all of itsfeatures got better from its camera to various applications that
makes the people treat the gadgetas a part of their life. The function of a mobile phone has
developed into entertainment. It isloaded with information on any given topic such as the
weather, traffic, trends in different part ofthe world and any news that a certain person can
think of. The phones of this age or thesmartphones are no less than a computer and sometimes
even more. Users can video call peersusing phones, manage official documents and even make
PowerPoint presentations in it. Thefact that this small piece of technology provides numerous
functions, among which the mostvaluable one is communication; puts the smartphone in the
center of the world. As of today, mobile phones are widely used by both young and old and most
ofthem are the students. In the past decades, Mobile phone was not as rampant among users
compared to how itis being used today; especially among pupils. Recently, mobile phone which
comes in differenttypes or models each for specific functions is one of the basic essential gadgets
possessed by anaverage school student which relatively might influence such learners’ academic
performance. Ascell phone technology continues its quick evolution, the device appears capable
of contributing tolearners learning and improved academic achievement. Modern “smartphones”
provide studentswith immediate, portable access to many of the same education-enhancing
capabilities as anInternet-connected computer, such as online information retrieval, file sharing,
and interactingwith professors and fellow students.
Though the mobile phone offers plenitude of benefits, thesedevices adversely has an
effect on the lives of the students. Just like any other technology, mobile phone has brought its
advantages and disadvantages. Some of the pupils had usedmobile technology wisely but most
of the individual make cellular phones their top priority in life. Lots of the learners had use
mobile phones in an excessive way. Thus, the mobile phone has thepower to affect the students’
level of academic performance in a positive or negative way. The researchers came up with the
study, The Effects of Mobile Phone Usage on theAcademic performance of the Grade 12 Senior
High School Students in Saint Claire AcademyLian, Batangas Inc. S.Y. 2020-2021 with the aim
of informing every one aboutThe Effects ofMobile Phone Usage on the Academic performance
of the grade 11 TVL C in liloy National highschool.
Research Objectives
This work is aimed at investigating the effects of mobile phone usage on the academic
performance of selected grade 12 students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina.And the
specific objectives are to:
1. Identify the good and bad effects of mobile phone usage in academic performance ofseleted
grade 12 students
2. Determine the reasons and responsibilities of students on using a mobile phone; and
3. Find out the comparison of student academic performance to those using a mobile phone and
to those not using it.
To understand on how to improve the level of academic performance, it isnecessary to get inputs
from the students. This poses a need for a deeper understandingon the effect of mobile
technology to the level of academic performance particularly withthe students of TVL track at
senior high school. As such, this research aims to answerthe following problems;

To the Grade 11 TVL Students of Liloy National Highschool, the outcome of this study
provides the respondents regarding the usage of mobile technology and its effects onacademic
performance.
Teachers- This study serves as guide for their teachingmethod. It is an interpersonal guide,
serves as window for them to observe and study the students’ behavior.
Campus- The result of this study will help them to have awide understanding of mobile
technology usage and its effect on academic performanceof their student. From here, they can
give the appropriate guide for their student in lifelearning.
To the Future Researchers- The methodology and structure of this research may beused by
succeeding researchers as a viable framework for further investigation in relationto mobile
technology with intellectual achievements or pursuits.
