Adventure Writing
WHAT IS ADVENTURE?
An adventure can be a made-up story, or it can be something that happens in real life.
An adventurer is someone who spends all his life going on adventures or doing things that are
risky.
Adventure is exploring the unknown, going out there unprepared and doing things that are
quite new and fun, " adventure is enjoying a camping trip with others in the wilderness..
Introduce a catalyst.

Focus on three main techniques in order to learn the art of adventure writing!
Story Questions: One way is through story questions. The simplest way to do that is to have the main
character raise a story question like;
What in the world is happening to my bike?
What was that sound in the woods?
Did I really just see what I think I did?
Word Referents: A word referent is a description of a character or an object without naming it. For
instance:
The creature stood on its hind legs and growled. It lumbered closer and closer to me. I felt its hot
breath on my face and was frozen with fear. The fish eater reached out a giant paw and that was
when I turned and ran.
Notice the author did not have to tell you it was a bear, but rather was able to describe it without
naming it thereby creating a sense of anticipation in the story!
The Magic of Three: This technique involves using a series of three sensory hints to build tension.
The third hint leads to a revelation.
For example:
Just then I saw large footprints in the snow and anxiously looked all around me. Nothing else was
unusual so I kept walking. Suddenly from out of nowhere a strange noise sounded very close to
where I was standing. My heart pounded in my chest and I stood frozen to the spot. Without warning
a trembling began to shake the trees around me and when I looked up I was standing in front of a
snow monster.
When building suspense in adventure, use red flag words and phrases. These include words such as;
suddenly, without warning, in the blink of an eye, instantly, a moment later.

SAMPLE
Last summer, Kate and her family went deep sea fishing on a cool, cloudy day. As they drifted far
from shore in the big boat, Kate fished with the blue fishing pole. She fished for hours, but she didn’t
catch anything. Her big brother didn’t catch anything either, but her father caught a small fish.
Suddenly a storm blew in. Crash! Waves crashed over the sides. Kate was soaked.
Kate ran to the raft. She jumped in. Her family climbed in, too. They lowered the lifeboat. Splash!
Rain poured like crazy! The boat tossed about. Then Kate saw a fin. “Shark!” she cried. She pointed
nervously. Her mom gasped.
Just then another boat came near. “Hang on! We will help you!” their captain shouted.
Soon they were all on the new boat and heading back toward shore. It finally stopped raining, and
the storm clouds blew away. By the time they landed at the dock, the sun was shining again. Kate was
glad her adventure was finally over, and everyone was safe.
