Structures

The document discusses different types of structures including natural, man-made, shell, frame, and solid structures. Shell structures provide strength and protection through a hard outer casing, frame structures use rigid parts joined together to support loads or span gaps, and solid structures are made of a uniform material throughout. Examples of each type are given.

Structures

What is a structure?
A structure is:
• Something that has been built or made, or
created.
• An object that has been put together in a
particular way.
Think of different objects around you that can
classified as structures and name them.
Purposes of structures include:
• Containing or protecting things. For example a
house, a cold drink can or bottle.
• Carrying or supporting a load. For example a
chair, a crane or a skeleton.
• To span a gap. For example a bridge or a
spider web.
There are man-made and natural
structures.
• What are natural structures? Give examples of
natural structures.
• What are man-made structures? Give
examples of man-made structures.
You can think of the following
examples:
• Natural: a nest, a skeleton, a shell, a tree, an
ant-hill and a skull,

• Man- made structures: a bridge, a car, a

house, a shoe, a table, a cage and a car port.
Types of structures
The three types of structures are:
Shell structures
Frame structures
Solid structures.
Shell structures
• A shell is a hard casing shaped into one piece.

It provides strength, firmness and structure.

Its function is to enclose, hold, contain or
protect its contents.
Examples of shell structures: tortoise’s shell, egg
shell and a cold drink can/ bottle
Frame structures
• A frame is a combination of different rigid
parts/ members joined together in a specific
way.

• Some frame structures can carry a load for example a skeleton

support the body weight and a chair supports a person.
• Some frame structures can span a gap for example a bridge or
a window frame.
Solid structures.
• A solid structure is made almost entirely of
matter/ material.
• They can also be called mass structures since
they are made of the same material
throughout formed into a solid. A mountain, a
brick and a wooden block are examples of
solid structures.
Exercise.
1. What is a structure?
2. What is a shell structure?
3. Give two examples of natural frame structures.
4. Write one example of a man-made solid structure.
5. What is the purpose of a tortoise’s shell?
6. Why is a bridge structure important?
7. Match the word in column A with the description in column B

COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. House A. Solid structure
2. Clay brick B. Another word for material
3. Matter C. Shell structure
4. Natural D. Made from pieces called
members
5. Frame E. Found in the environment
