Cell Theory

The Cell Theory

Cell: a multicellular unit that continuously divide and replicate to make up an

organism.

the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms
and the tissues of the body; the basic building blocks of all living things.

Cells were first discovered by an english scientist named Robert Hooke in 1665
using his compound microscope.

The cell theory states that all organisms are composed of cells. It also has
postulates that describes other properties of the cell.

The Cell Theory: Classic

The Cell Theory: the scientific theory that all living things are made of cells as the
smallest functional unit.

It was formally established in 1893 following the discoveries of Theodor Schwann

and Matthias Schleiden.

The theory originally consists of three tenets, the third of which was contributed by
Rudolf Virchow.

The original postulates of the cell the cell theory states that:

All living things are made of cells.

Schleiden and Schwann’s discovery of cells being present in both plant and
animal tissue led them to conclude that all living things are made of cell.
Cells make up the structure and organization of organisms.

Organisms may have different cell type: prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell.

Cell Theory 1
Cells are the basic unit of life.

Cells are where all metabolic processes occur that keeps the organism
alive, which is why it is called the fundamental unit of life. Its structure
houses different molecules and compounds with different but cooperative
functions.

There are a total of 37.2 trillion cells in the human body.

Cells arise from pre-existing cells.

Virchow revised the original postulate of Schleiden and Schwann which

stated that cells arise from spontaneous generation. He discovered that one
cell essentially just splits numerous times to form new cells.

The Modern Cell Theory

The cell theory holds true for all living things. With the original postulates as foundation
and the advancement of technology, scientists discovered new information about the
cells and developed the “Modern Cell Theory”.

The general accepted postulates of the modern cell theory are:

All living things are made of cells.

Cells are the basic unit of life.

Cells come from pre-existing cells.

Cells contain hereditary information (DNA).

All cells are basically the same in chemical composition in organisms of similar
species.

Energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry) happens in cells.
