readers will know from personal
experience, this doesn’t mean
boarding the aircraft, rather it usually
entails waiting on an airbridge, steps
leading down to the apron, or even
the apron itself. This again will shave
off a few precious minutes off the
overall boarding process, although it
often isn’t very pleasant for passengers
– especially those with young families.
This procedure is known as ‘pre-
boarding’, and the travellers are now
the responsibility of the ramp agent.
It is at this stage that decisions will
be made by gate staff about offloading
passengers who have checked in
but not arrived at the gate. Different
airlines will have their own criteria
as to how long they wait and will be
informed by a multitude of variables,
most notably if the passenger(s) in
question have any bags in the hold as
these will need finding and removing.
This isn’t a simple decision as despite
knowing roughly where it is located
in the hold, the luggage will still take
time to find. The gate staff will also call
the ramp agent at this point to confirm
the passenger total and how many, if
any, bags have been taken at the gate
to be placed in the hold.
On the topic of luggage, the ramp
agent may also have to deal with
queries from the baggage handlers
that arise during the loading process.

Few airports in the UK

during the pandemic as
Gatwick. Martyn Cartledge
assesses recent events
at the London gateway
before considering what
the future may hold
D
escribing a situation
as unprecedented has
become a cliché, but few
would argue that it’s a
fitting description for the
events of early 2020. Within a few days,
airport terminals around the world
emptied while the ramps outside filled
up with aircraft with nowhere to go.
London/Gatwick was certainly no
exception to this. The airport slashed
its opening hours – except for
emergency landings – with the few
remaining passengers being funnelled
through a single terminal. Airport staff
were laid off or furloughed, with a
similar situation at many airlines and
other partner organisations. Speaking
at the time, Stewart Wingate, the
chief executive of the airport, said:
“Significantly reduced passenger
numbers are likely to be sustained, at
least in the short to medium term, and
I need to prepare people for the news
that other serious measures are likely.”
The outbreak took the wind out the
sails of Gatwick. Pre-crisis passenger
numbers were at a record high of
46 million per year – a figure that is
all the more impressive when one
www.key.aero 43
considers that all departures and
arrivals used a single runway, albeit
one that had been extended a number
of times since the reopening of the
airport in 1958 by Queen Elizabeth II.
A two-and-a-half year construction
project transformed the site from a
wartime RAF night-fighter base into
a world-class commercial airport
befitting the upcoming jet age.
Pandemic perseverance
Passenger numbers during the height
of the COVID-19 crisis were 80%
down, with the airport reporting an
eyewatering loss of £465.5m in the
year ending December 31, 2020.
That said, Gatwick management
were always confident that the
gateway would make it through.
To this end, the strategy to
navigate the pandemic was started
quickly, but not without some pain.
A major restructuring saw the loss
of nearly 25% of positions across
the business. Moreover, the airport
owners took on further debt in
the form of a £300m bank loan, in
addition to a further £250m from
the Bank of England’s COVID-19
corporate financing facility. Gatwick
received no government grants.
Unsurprisingly given the wholesale
collapse in air traffic, there was
only justification for the use of one
terminal. Initially, scheduled flights
were limited to between 1400hrs
and 2200hrs and operated solely
“This was quite an achievement as the airport
from the South Terminal from April went from approximately 300 flights a day to
1, 2020. There wasn’t much traffic
to talk about, as the vast majority of operating around 570 services – the equivalent
airlines stopped operating during a
particularly dark period at the start of
of opening a medium-sized airport overnight...”
the outbreak. Ryanair was one of the
few carriers to continue to operate
flights, with lifeline connections to
Dublin maintained throughout.
A switch was made to operate solely
from the North Terminal from June
15, 2020, when easyJet resumed a
skeleton operation. As the airport’s
biggest operator by some margin, it
made sense to have activities based
around their core infrastructure.
Despite a lowly trickle of passengers,
Gatwick management attempted to
keep vital networks and infrastructure
active by charging a minimum

passenger numbers picked up again.
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. NOT FOR OPERATIONAL USE
The downtime was not wasted. Many
of the airport’s concession partners,
including shops, cafes and bars, spent
months refurbishing, cleaning and
updating facilities and equipment
ahead of a revival in air traffic. While
many investment projects were put
on hold, some major schemes – such
as the redevelopment of the airport’s
mainline railway station – actually
benefited from the pandemic because
the reduced passenger footfall
kept disruption to a minimum.
Technological legacy

Adrian Witherow, chief operating
officer at Gatwick, reported at
the time that the new system has
“proven itself to be extremely reliable
and provides a really high degree
of reassurance, as every single
passenger and staff member using
the system will have a tray that
has only just been disinfected.”
Meanwhile, out on the ramp,
sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
was introduced for the first time
at Gatwick in October 2021. This
was made possible through a
collaboration between the airport
and its partners, Q8 Aviation, easyJet
and Neste. A percentage of SAF
blend will be used by easyJet on
its flights out of the West Sussex
site following the installation of an
electric hydrant dispenser provided
by World Fuel Services – a UK first.
Other hi-tech innovations include a
new handheld digital platform aimed
at transforming aircraft turnarounds.
It allows ground handlers to update
air traffic controllers direct from the
apron in real-time about the status of
baggage loading, refuelling or other
critical aircraft preparations. The
goal is to provide ground controllers
and apron control with a more
accurate departure or ‘target off-
block time’ (TOBT) to feed into the
airport’s overall flying programme

Runway revolution?
One of the biggest projects planned
– and one certainly with a view to
growth – is the Northern Runway
project. Technically speaking, Gatwick
has always had two runways, although
the northerly strip 26R/08L is not
in routine use and is too close to its

is expected to happen in spring 2023.
Even with the expiration of the 1979
agreement, this is far from a done deal
and there are likely more challenges to
be overcome and unexpected twists
before the project comes to fruition.
