India before the colonisation
rule.
The Pre-Colonial State
• Before the advent of colonial rule ,
India was a self-sufficient and
flourishing economy.
• Evidently our country was
popularly known as the golden
eagle. India had already
established itself on the world map
with a decent amount of exports

• Although it was primarily it was an

agrarian economy, many
manufacturing activities were
budding in the pre-colonial India .
• Indian craftsmanship was
widely popular around the
world and garnered huge
demands .

• The economy was well known

for its handicrafts industries in
the fields of cotton and silk
textiles , metal and precious
stone works extra .

• Such developments lured the

British to paralyse our state
and use it for their home
country’s benefits

British Colonial Rule
The Colonial Rule
• The British came to India with the motive of colonisation. Their plans
involved using India as a feeder colony for their own flourishing economy
back at Britain .
• This exploitation continued for about two centuries, till we finally got
independence on 15 August 1947 . Consequently this rendered our
country’s economy hollow.

• The colonial rule is marked as with periods of heavy exploitation.

• The British took steps that ensured development and promotions of the
interests of their home country .

• They were in no way concerned about the course of Indian economy.

Such steps transformed our economy for the worse. It effectively became
a supplier of raw materials and a consumer of finished goods .
The Kohinoor
diamond
The famous Kohinoor diamond
has being doing rounds in the
news. It was prized possession
of ore-colonial India which the
British took with them on their
way back home .
Atma Nirbhar
Bharat
What is ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’
• The word Atma Nirbhar means ‘Self-Reliant’.
• Atma Nirbhar Bharat is the vision of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi
of making India a self-reliant nation .

• The first mention of this came in the form of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharata Abhiyan’ or
Self Reliant Indian Mission’ during the announcement of the coronavirus
pandemic related economic package on 12 May 2020 .

• The self-reliant policy does not aim to be protectionist in nature and as

Finance Minister clarified "self reliant India does not mean cutting off from rest
of the world”.

• Foreign direct investment is welcome, technology is welcome self reliant India

translates to being a bigger and more important part of the global economy.
Atma Nirbhar
Bharat Initiatives
• As part of the Atma Nirbhar
Bharat package , numerous
government decisions have
taken place such as changing
the definition of MSME ,
boosting scope for private
participation in numerous
sectors , increasing FDI in the
defence sector , and the
vision has found support in
many sectors such as the
solar manufacturers sectors .
Examples Of Initiatives Helping
Atmanirbhar Bharat
1) The largest fund
in the country worth
₹21000 crore was
setup by the IIT
Alumni Council with
the aim of
supporting the
mission towards self
reliance
2) India’s own ‘Made In
India’ 5G network was
announced in July 2020
by Reliance Jio . Mukesh
Ambani announced in
mid July “Jio has
created a complete 5G
solution from scratch
that will enable us to
launch a world class 5G
in India using 100%
homegrown technologies
and solutions’’
3) In August 2020 the
Defence Minister
Rajnath Singh
announced that the
Defence Ministry is
now ready for a big
push to Atma
Nirbhar Bharat
initiative by
imposing an import
embargo on 101
items in a staged
manner over a
period of 5 years .
4) Speaking of FDI
Apple is moving
from China to
Chennai and it will
now be
manufactured at the
Foxconn plant near
Chennai. Apple is
indeed coming to
India and is also
planning to start an
official store in 2021 .
MSMEs Benefits
Due To ATM
• Under this scheme the
minister announced several
measures for MSMEs that are
expected to help 45 lakh
businesses units resume their
operations.

• The credit guarantee of 3 lakh

crore is intended to help
MSMEs that have 25 crore
outstanding loan or less than
100 crore turnover

:PSU Defence stock , L&T,
Tata Advance enable an

worth of contracts would be
placed to the domestic

seven years .
Assessment
1) Atmanirbhar
Bharat has been
called by some
as a repackaged
version of the
Make In India
movement using
new tag lines
such ‘Vocal for
Local’
2) Calls for India to
boycott Chinese
products ,are
practically difficult in
the short term for
India as India
exports $75 billion
worth of goods every
year from China ,to
the extent that parts
of Indian industry are
dependent on China
Results of boycott
China movement
started showing in
early August with
Government of
customs data
showing that Chinese
exports To India had
fallen by 25%
compared to the
same period in 2019
Conclusion

The Atmanirbhar Bharat Package is a

monumental effort to help Indians and
the Indian economy tackle the COVID-
19 scourge and lays the groundwork
for India to become a $5 trillion by
2025 .
