Title: Anointed David

Date: 28 November 2021 / Da Nang VEC

Introduction

Who is the most important person in the Bible? Of course it is

Jesus Christ. The Bible is a book about Jesus. Then, if you
recommend two most important people next to Jesus, who would you
say? Matthew 1:1 “A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son
of David, the son of Abraham.” Abraham and David. Abraham is the
one who start salvation work and David is the important person
inbetween Abraham and Jesus. Then, Jesus completed salvation work.
So David is an important figure in the history of salvation. I will be
preaching about David three times. (I preached this sermon one year
ago and did not continue next sermons) David's life is very unique
in few particular. 1) David is a model of a very ordinary person
became the great king. A shepherd became great king. Not just
ordinary king but very strong king who conquered all surrounding
nations like Philistine, Moab, Ammon, Edom, etc. 2) David is the one
who wrote many lovely poems (Psalm) in the Bible. He is the man
whom God delighted the most. 3) David’s sellection was planed from
the beginning. His belonging to Judah tribal and his hometown of
Bethlehem were all in God's plan. I will explain it more in the
conclusion part.

Today, we are going to focus on David's youth. The first sermon of

David’s life who was anointed by Samuel.

Main subject

1. David's Choice
The situation of Israel in David's birth time was the beginning of
the Monarchy period. When Israel settled in Canaan judges ruled the
country. After that God allowed a king to rule the Israel. The first
king was Saul, who was tall, handsome and humble. However, he
becomes arrogant and does not obey God's commands so that he
was rejected by God. Then God sent Samuel to David to anoint him
as king.
Question Point) It is ironic that David, the father of the Messiah,
was born in a time of monarchy that God hated. If Saul had done
well, David would not have become king, but Saul's failure made
David a great king. Keep in mind that God's providence continues in
the midst of human failure. We bow our heads before God's
mysterious knowledge and sovereignty.

Let us observe the selection of God for David. Notice how is

different from God's way of choosing His people in nowadays.
1) God looked at David’s heart, not his outward appearance. In the
town of Bethlehem, there were seven boys born to Jesse (2 Chronicle
2:15). Among them, the eldest son, Eliab, had the outstanding
appearance that Samuel fell in love with at first sight. But he was
not chosen. God chose David, the youngest, who was tending the
sheep without being invited to Worship service(sacrifice). This speaks
of God's unconditional election. If God chose by rank or appearance,
David was far from choosing. But God looked at the heart and chose
David. In this way, the hearts can be the selection criteria. This can
also be a condition. But what we need to remember is this. His
hearts is not originally pretty, but it looks pretty because God loved
him. The heart of all human being is corrupt and evil. In fact, there
is nothing that human can show good to God by working hard.

Application) Your appearance, family background, nationality. Are

these things a stumbling block to your heart? These may be man's
selection criteria, but not God's selection criteria. The gospel has
only one condition. Whether you truly believe in Jesus Christ or not
is only condition. He sees only the heart that wants to believe in
Jesus and saves for them.
2. David's Anointing
Now let's look at David's difference before and after anointing.
Before David was anointed, he was an ordinary boy. He was not
even invited to Samuel's sacrifice and was caring for father’s sheep.
He could actually join sacrifice after handing over sheep to servants.
That was David’s position in his house. But after he is anointed as
king, he was totally changed. He is really being like a king.
1 Samuel 16:13, “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him
in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of
the LORD came upon David in power.”
David was not chosen by God because he was wise and brave, but
after God anointed him, he became wise and brave. This is the
important part.
Application) We are not chosen because we are righteous, but we
become righteous after being chosen. Before we believed in Jesus, we
did not feel bad about our sin. But after believing in Jesus, when we
sin and our hearts ache. Our souls have changed and we become
righteous. We did not believe in Jesus because we were brave, but
because we believed in Jesus, we became brave. As the Holy Spirit
came upon us, we became brave and wise like David.
Testimony) It is impossible for me to go out as a missionary at the
age of 26 with my old self. After receiving the baptism of the Holy
Spirit, such courage and faith came to me. It was not my strength
that I have took my family to India and plant churches where there
was nothing. It was absolutely impossible without the power of the
Holy Spirit. We see miracles come true in our lives because we have
been changed by the Holy Spirit.

3. The first gateway to becoming a king

1) Fight with Goliath
God has anointed David as king, but he has not yet been
recognized by the people of Israel. Some proof was needed for the
people to accept. He has to pass some kind of test.
For this, God prepared a battle. The fight against Goliath in the
Philistine War. When the Philistines attacked Israel and pitched
camp, they put a worrier named Goliath at the forefront. Goliath was
3 meters tall and his armor weighed 58 kilos. And he has been a
warrior since childhood. This Goliath came out and said to Israel.
Whoever fights with me, let the one who wins become the master
and the one who loses becomes the slave. In response to Goliath's
challenge, the Israeli generals and soldiers were afraid and no one
was able to step forward.
David was a 17-year-old boy at this time. He was a boy who wasn't
even old enough to go to the army. His three older brothers were
called up to the army, but David was still young. At the request of
his father, he went to his brothers who went to war with bread and
cheese. There he saw Goliath. All the Israeli soldiers were afraid of
Goliath, but when David saw Goliath blaspheming God's army, his
holy wrath arose. “I can not bear this uncircumcised man
blaspheming the armies of Israel. I will go and kill him right now.”
Goliath was terrifying man, but in the eyes of the anointed one
looked differently. 1) He is an uncircumcised man who has not
received God's favor. 2) He was an easy target to hit by throwing
stones because he is tall and large. 3) He can't move fast because
he wears 58 kilos of heavy armor. 4) He has blasphemed the army
of God, so God will judge him.
When you look through the glasses of the Holy Spirit, you can see
the current situation completely different.
David went to battle with a sling, not a sword and a spear. He
faced the giant warrior with a few stones. But instead of the sword,
he went out in the name of Jehovah. What was the result of fight?
David's slingshot slammed into Goliath's forehead and Goliath fell
down. David ran and drew a sword of Goliath and cut his head. The
Philistine soldiers who saw this fight started to flee, and Israel army
pursued the Philistines and achieved a great victory.

Conclusion
Just as David has changed after his anoint, our lives also changed
after received the Holy Spirit. Our dream has changed. We used to
have full of worldly dreams, but now God's dreams become our
dreams.
Our mind has changed too. Holy wrath arises when we see the
proud, evil people, false religious leaders. But when we meet the
poor, humble, and the man of faith, boundless love arises. Shepherd
compassion arises when we see lost souls. Wherever they are, we
want to run to them even to ends of the earth. We have changed
like that, and the Holy Spirit made us different people.

Another important thing is this. It is a fact that our faith in Jesus

was predestined from the beginning. David's life was foretold by
Jacob about 900 years before he was born. The prophecy was
recorded when Jacob blessed his son Judah.
Genesis 49:10 “The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the
ruler's staff from between his feet his, until he comes to whom it
belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.” Among the twelve
sons of Jacob, the Messiah will be born in a house of Judah. So,
Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, where the people of Judah
lived. Luke 2:11 “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born
to you; he is Christ the Lord.” According to this prophecy, David
was chosen as the forefather of the Messiah. Gospel focus more on
God's choice than man’s righteousness. It is more persuasive that he
was chosen not because he was righteous, but because he was
favored unconditionally.

Application) So, how did you come to believe in Jesus? How did you
get saved in Vietnam? Did God call you because you were faithful
and less sinful than others? No. “God, who has saved us and called
us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because
of his own purpose and grace his. This grace was given us in Christ
Jesus before the beginning of time,” (2 Timothy 1:9)
It is not a choice on the basis of our good works, but a grace
destined in Jesus. It was also decided a long time ago. God loved us
and came to us, poor and pitiful like us. It was not that we loved
him beforehand, but he came to us because he loved us first.
The reason why David became the father of Messiah and we
became children of God is because God loved us and chose us. It is
a 100% free gift of God. Can such a salvation be nullified by our
mistake(fall)? No. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.
(Romans 8:39) He who has chosen us will justify us and bring
complete salvation. “And those he predestined, he also called; those
he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”
(Romans 8:30)
This is the message for us today. You are a blessed person who has
been loved by God as much as David. Amen!
