Topic : Surface Area and Volume

1. Find the volume of a cuboid whose length = 12 cm, breadth = 8 cm, height = 6 cm
Solution:
Length of a cuboid = 12 cm
Breadth of a cuboid = 8 cm
Height of a cuboid = 6 cm
By using the formula
Volume of a cuboid = length × breadth × height
= 12 × 8 ×6
= 576 cm3

2. Find the volume of a cube whose side is 1.2 m

Solution:
Side of cube = 1.2 m
Volume of cube = (side) 3
= 1.23 = 1.728 m3
3. Find the height of a cuboid of volume 100 cm3, whose length and breadth are 5 cm and 4
cm respectively.
Solution:
Volume of a cuboid = 100 cm3
Length of a cuboid = 5 cm
Breadth of a cuboid = 4 cm
Let height of cuboid be ‘h’ cm
We know that, l × b × h = 100cm
h = 100/( l × b)
= 100/(5×4)
= 5cm
4. A cuboidal vessel is 10 cm long and 5 cm wide. How high it must be made to hold 300
cm3 of a liquid?
Solution:
Volume of a liquid in the vessel = 300 cm3
Length of a cuboidal vessel = 10 cm
Page 1
Breadth of a cuboidal vessel = 5 cm
Let height of cuboidal vessel be ‘h’ cm
We know that, l × b × h = 300 cm3
h = 300/(l × b)
= 300/(10×5)
= 6cm
5. A milk container is 8 cm long and 50 cm wide. What should be its height so that it can
hold 4 litres of milk?
Solution:
Volume = 4 litres = 4000 cm3
Length of a milk container = 8 cm
Breadth of a milk container = 50 cm
Let height of milk container be ‘h’ cm
We know that, l × b × h = 4000 cm3
h = 4000/ (l × b)
= 4000/ (50×8)
= 10cm

6.The volume of a box is 13400 cm3. The area of its base is 670 cm2. Find the height of the
box.
Solution:
Volume of the box = 13400 cm3
Area of the box = 670 cm2

Hence, the required height = 20 cm.

7. How many bricks each 25 cm by 15 cm by 8 cm, are required for a wall 32 m long, 3 m
high and 40 cm thick?
Solution:
Converting into same units, we have,
Length of the wall = 32 m = 32 × 100 = 3200 cm
Breadth of the wall = 3 m = 3 × 100 = 300 cm
and the height = 40 cm
v, length of the brick = 25 cm
breadth = 15 cm
and height = 8 cm
Page 2
Number of bricks required

Hence, the required number of bricks = 12800.

8. Find the capacity of water tank in litres whose dimensions are 4.2m , 3m and 1.8 m ?
Solution:
Volume of water tank = 4.2 x 3 x 1.8 m3 = 22.68m3
1m3 = 1000l
22.68 m3 = 22.68 x 1000 = 22680 litres
9, 160 m3 of water to be used to irrigate a rectangular field whose area is 800m 2 . what
will be the height of the water level in the field ?
Solution :
volume of water = volume of cuboid formed on the field by water
160 = area of base x height
160 = 800 x h
h= 0.2 m
10, Find the side of cube whose surface area is 600 cm2
Solution:
Surface area of cube = 6 a2
600 = 6 a2
a = 10 cm

1. Water flows from a tank with a rectangular base measuring 80 cm by 70 cm into

another tank with a square base of side 60 cm. If the water in the first tank is 45
cm deep ,how deep will it be in the second tank?

Page 3
Solution : Rectangular base tank = 80cm x 70 cm
Height of the tank = 45 cm
Each side of a square base = 60 cm
Height of the square base tank = h
Volume of rectangular tank = volume of square tank
80x70x45 = 60x60xh
h = 70 cm
Therefore, water in second tank is 70 cm deep

2. A rectangular sheet of paper is rolled in two different ways to form two different
cylinder find the volume of cylinders in each case if the sheet measures 44 cm x
33 cm .
Solution : first case: if sheet rolled along 44 cm
2π r = 44 cm
r= 44/2π = 7 cm
second case : if sheet rolled along 33 cm
2π r = 33 cm
r= 21/4 cm
volume in first case : π r2 h
22/7 x 7x7x33 = 5082 cm3
volume in first case : π r2 h
22/7 x 21/4x21/4 x44 = 3811.5 cm3

3. A rectangular examination hall having seat for 500 candidates has to be built so
as to allow 4 cubic metres of air and 0.5 square metres of floor area per
candidate . If the length of the hall be 25 m find the height and breadth of the
hall.
Solution :
Total number of seats = 500
Length of hall = 25m
Cubic metres of floor area per candidates = 0.5 m2
Height = volume of air / square metres of floor area = 0/0.5 = 8 m
Total capacity of hall = 500 x4 = 2000 m3
Breadth of hall = 2000/25x8 = 10m

4. A cylindrical tank has a radius of 154 cm . It is filled with water to a height of 3

m . If water to a height of 4.5 m is poured into it , what will be the increase in
volume of water in kl?
Solution : volume = π r2 h = 22/7 x 154 x154 x300
Page 4
In height of water 4.5 m poured into it that
Volume = 22/7 x 154 x 154 x 450 = 33541200 cm 3
Increase in volume = 33541200 – 22360800 = 11180.4 l = 11.1804 l

5. Four times the curved surface area of a cylinder is equal to 6 times the sum of
the area of its bases . if its height is 12 m find its C.S.A?
SOLUTION:
4x 2π r h = 6X 2π r2
2h = 3r
r = 2/3 x 12
r = 8cm
C.S.A = 2π r h = 44X96/7 = 603.428 cm2
6. External dimension of a closed wooden box are in the ratio 5:4:3 . If the cost of
painting its outer surface at the rate of Rs 5 per dm 2 is Rs 11750 find the
dimension of the box ?
Solution :
Let the dimensions be 5x,4x and 3x
Cost of painting = Rs 5 per dm2
Surface area = 11750 /5 = 2350 dm2
T.S.A of cuboid = 2 (lb+bh+hl) = 2(5x .4x + 4x.3x +5x.3x)
= 2(20x2+12x2+15x2) = 94x2
94x2 = 2350
x= 5
hence dimensions are 25cm, 20 cm , 15 cm
