Organization

The Baylor in Brazil Summer Study Abroad Program began in 2006 as a study abroad

program in the state of Espiritu Santo. The program is currently sponsored by the Baylor
Department of Public Health and the Baylor Department of Biology. This program aims to equip
local churches with the necessary tools to develop health promotion programs in their
community and schools. Baylor in Brazil's mission is to engage students and faculty in global
community-based partnerships that can impact the health of communities. Baylor in
Brazil's program includes training and partnership support for the local churches interested in
developing community health and health promotion programs in communities and schools. This
program focuses on underserved communities and the churches that serve them. Vitoria and
Anchieta, located in the state of Espiritu Santo, are the two central communities in which the
BIB program takes place. The practicum supervisor for Baylor in Brazil is Dr.Eva Doyle. She
serves as the Chair of the Baylor Public Health Department and the director of the Baylor in
Brazil study abroad program alongside her husband, Dr. Robert Doyle. Dr.Doyle has a Master of
Science in Education, a Ph.D. in Health Education and is a master-certified health education
specialist. Within the program, Dr.Doyle teaches the global health summer course and leads the
development and implementation of students in community-based health promotion projects.
Rationale
This practicum fits within my career goals as a future public health professional because
it provides me with a hands-on experience in health promotion program evaluation and
implementation. As a professional, I want to work in program development globally. Being
exposed to a new country and culture expands my knowledge of how my career could look like
in the future.

Explanation of Competency Matrix/Planned Products

Throughout the Baylor in Brazil program, I will be a part of the coordinating team for my
practicum. Being a part of this team involves various responsibilities, including completing
products such as the Healthy Decisions presentations, topic presentation in the PUBH 4340
Global Health course, and serving as part of the coordinating team.
The healthy decisions presentations explain the five dimensions of wellness and tips on
how an individual can set goals for their personal life. The competencies chosen for this product
are essential for the program's mission because, as public health professionals, we need to be
aware of what communication strategies are best for the population we are targeting. Knowing
that we will be presenting in school and churches already shows us how we need to adapt and
change our presentations according to our audience. Additionally, I will be developing and
piloting a new topic presentation focused on interpersonal violence in the schools and churches.
The competencies I chose for this product outline how during my preparation for this trip I will
be assessing and integrating the practices of adapting my materials according to the populations
needs. Designing a program that targets a population’s needs and piloting it during our time there
will provide our group with more knowledge on what other factors we could change about this
topic and how to better integrate it into the program. Dr.Doyle will teach the global health
summer course, and for my practicum, I will lead one of the textbook chapters from this course
to the enrolled students. This involves creating a lesson plan, presentation, and developing a
learning activity for the group. This component of my practicum provides me with the
experience of creating and adapting health topics to individuals from a different population than
the one we are targeting. The competencies I linked to this component describe how to be
appropriate when presenting in front of a group and to consider that individuals learn in different
ways. Lastly, as part of the coordinating team, I will assist in the development and
implementation of group events for the Brazilian communities. These events are important for
my practicum because they will help me develop leadership and communication skills when
working with a different community and culture.
The competencies and products identified for my practicum are significant for my future
career because I plan on working in program development within diverse communities. This
practicum experience will prepare me for my career life after Baylor as a Public Health
professional. The practicum will open many work opportunities for me, given the experience of
working abroad and being exposed to the process of developing programs outside of the United
States.
