The Three Mountains
The Three Mountains
The Three Mountains
The
United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands,
Great Britain and Ireland, and a great number of small islands. Their total area is over 314
000 sq. km. The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea
and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean
and the Irish Sea. Northern Ireland occupies one third of the island of Ireland. It borders on
the Irish Republic in the south. The island of Great Britain consists of three main parts:
England (the southern and middle part of the island), Wales (a mountainous peninsula in the
West) and Scotland (the northern part of the island).
There are no high mountains in Great Britain. In the north the Cheviots separate
England from Scotland, the Pennines stretch down North England along its middle, the
Cambrian mountains occupy the greater part of Wales and the Highlands of Scotland are
the tallest of the British mountains. There is very little flat country except in the region
known as East Anglia. Most of the rivers flow into the North Sea. The Thames is. the
deepest and the longest of the British rivers. Some of the British greatest ports are situated
in the estuaries of the Thames, Mersey, Trent, T Clyde and Bristol Avon. Great Britain is not
very rich in mineral resources, it has some deposits of coal and iron ore and vast deposits
of oil and gas that were discovered in the North Sea.
The warm currents of the Atlantic Ocean influence the climate of Great Britain. Winters
are not severely cold and. summers are rarely hot. The population of the United Kingdom is
over 58 million people. The main nationalities are: English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish. In
Great Britain there are a lot of immigrants from former British Asian and African colonies.
Great Britain is a highly industrialized country. New industries have been developed in the
last three decades. The main industrial centres are London, Birmingham, Manchester,
Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Bristol. The capital of the country is London. The United
Kingdom is a parliamentary monarchy.
The three mountains are:
Snowdon, in Wales (1085m)
Scafell Pike, in England (978m)
Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1344m)
Snowdon
Wales's largest mountain, Snowdon is the third highest in Britain, with a
prominence of 1,038 metres. Snowdon has long been labelled the "busiest
mountain in Britain", thanks to its range of ascents, summit café and even railway
for those wanting to reach the top without all that pesky physical exertion getting
in their way.
Ben Nevis
Britain's highest peak, Ben Nevis, stretches up some 1,344 metres into the Scottish
sky, putting it well clear of all others in Britain. Despite occupying a rather remote
area of the Scottish Highlands, Ben Nevis welcomes more than 100,000 visitors
every
Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England and the 13th tallest in Britain.
The Land
Scotland and Wales are the most mountainous parts of the UK. A ridge of hills, the
Pennine, runs down the centre of northern England. Many coastal areas are low-
lying, especially in the east and south of England. These include the wetlands of
the Somerset levels, that regularly flood during heavy rain.
Most of the UK is made up of gently rolling hills with isolated areas of high
ground such as Dartmoor in the south-west of England or the Mourne Mountains
in Northern Ireland.
The River Thames
The River Thames is a large river in England. It goes
through London the capital city of the United Kingdom.
Like the Celts who lived in the area, the Romans called the river Thamesis.
The Thames was an important way to go between London and
Westminster in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Severn River flows out into the Bristol Channel and then into the
Celtic Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
The River Trent is one of the major rivers of England. It is the third longest
river in the United Kingdom. It starts inStaffordshire. It flows through the
centre of England until it joins the River Ouse to form the River
Humber (estuary) which empties into the North Sea.
It is the eighth longest river in the United Kingdom, and the second longest
in Scotland. it was an important river for shipbuilding and trade in
the British Empire
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It has been one of the
country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the
arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in

Natural resources:
England has large deposits of coal, mined for more than 300 years. For
most of the 19th and 20th centuries, coal was England's richest natural
resource, meeting most of the nation's requirement for energy. Today, coal
can be produced more cheaply in other countries and so many British
factories and mines have closed.
Oil and gas were discovered under the North Sea during the 1960s and new
supplies are still being found today. Gas has been particularly important in
replacing coal as a fuel for generating electricity.

London is by far the largest city in England and the United Kingdom. 8.63
million people live in London,[2] which is on the River Thames. It is
the capital of the United Kingdom.
London is the biggest city in middle Europe, and the world's largest
financial centre.[3][4][5]
For a long time, London was a small city. All its people lived inside the
walls that were built by the Romans. This area is still called the City of
London. There were many villages around the city. Gradually, more and
more people came to live there. Then, step by step, the villages joined
together into one huge city.

accounts for 10% of GDP, one of the highest shares of any industrial nation.
