1. A circular rod of steel 10 mm diameter is tested for tension and it was observed that
when tension was 11 kN, the total extension on a 300 mm length was 0.20 mm. Find the
value of E?
2. A bar of 30 mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 60 KN. The measured extension
of gauge length of 200 mm is 0.09 mm and the change in diameter is 0.039 mm.
Calculate the Poisson’s ratio and the value of the three moduli?
3. A member ABCD is subjected to point loads, P1 P2 P3 and P4 as shown in figure.
Calculate the force P2 necessary for equilibrium if P1 = 40 KN P3 = 450KN and
P4 = 130 KN. determine the total elongation of the member and P4, assume the
modulus of elasticity = 2.1 × 10^-5 N/mm2?

4. A mild steel column is of hollow circular section with 120 mm external and 90 mm
internal. The column section is 3m long and hinged at both the ends. Calculate the
maximum permissible load with an eccentricity of 20 mm if the maximum compressive
stress is limited to 80 N/mm2. Take E=2.05*105 N/mm2 ?
5. A rod shown in following fig. is subjected to a pull of 500 kN on the ends. Taking
E = 205 kN/mm2 . Find the extension of the rod?

6. A copper tube of 50 mm internal diameter, 1 m long and 1.25 mm thick has closed ends
and is filled with the water under pressure Neglecting any distortion of the end plates,
determine the alteration of pressure when an additional volume of 3 cubic centimeters
of water is pumped into the tube?

angle of twist at the junction. Take the modulus of rigidity of the materials CAl = 0.3 X
105 N/mm2 and CSt = 0.9 X 105 N/mm2 ?
13. A beam ABC of length 9 m has one support of the left end and the other support at
a distance of 6 m from the left end. The beam carries a point load of 1 KN at the
right end and carries a uniformly distributed load of 4 KN/m over a length of 3m
as shown in figure. Determine the slope and deflection at point C?
14. Find the Young’s modulus of the rod which tapers uniformly from 30 mm to 15 mm
diameter in length of 350mm is subjected to an axial load of 5.5 KN. The change in length

The shearing stress in the shaft must not exceed 60 N/mm2 and twist in a length of
2.5 m is not to exceed 1degree. Calculate the minimum external diameter of the
shaft C = 80 KN/mm2 ?

16. Two shafts of same material & lengths are subjected to same torque. If the first shaft is a
solid circular section & second shaft is of hollow section whose internal dia. is 2/3 of
outer dia. & the maximum shear stress developed in each shaft is same. Compare the
weight of shaft?
17. Find the thickness of metal necessary for a thick cylindrical shell of internal
diameter 160 mm to withstand an internal pressure of 8 N/mm2. The maximum
hoop stress in the section is not to exceed 35 N/mm2?
18. A thin cylinder shell 120 cm dia 1.5 cm thick 6 m long is subjected to internal fluid
pressure 2.5 N/mm2 of the value E = 2 x 1041 N/mm2, µ = 0.3. Find -

(iii) Change in volume

19. Find the max shear stress induced in solid circular shaft of dia 20 cm. When the shaft
transmit 18.kW at 200 RPM ?
