Benefits of chemistry in making medicine

Chemistry is important in aspects of everyday life in the field of

medicine as it deals with the principles of hygiene, sterilization,
medicine, diagnosis and also disease. Thanks to the contribution of
chemistry in the field of medicine, medical professionals can provide
proper medical assistance to their patients without any error or
confusion.

Chemistry has contributed greatly to the world of medicine,

contributing to the development of many advances that regularly save
lives, allowing us to live happier, healthier and, above all, live longer.
Going back to human history, health care and medicine were in their
infancy so when someone was sick, the only way the doctors could do
was comfort them and keep them clean.

Chemistry is important to medicine because it allows researchers to
create drugs that effectively interact with the body to fight disease,
according to a report by the National Institute of General Medical
Sciences. Once a promising molecule has been identified, chemistry is
needed to ensure that the correct version of the molecule is used. (Why Is
Chemistry Important to Medicine? (reference.com)

The drug is involved in the expression of a gene and inhibits

a specific enzyme. These enzyme inhibitors are designed to
specifically disable any enzyme function in the body.
Thanks to the development of chemistry, chemists have
studied and understood the effectiveness of drugs ranging
from ARVs (antiviral drugs) to aspirin, as the discovery and
development of any drug is a one of the most expensive
and complex drugs in the pharmaceutical industry.

The drugs we use have different chemical properties such as acidic,

alkaline, oil soluble, water soluble, etc. Knowledge of chemistry helps a
doctor learn about the chemical nature of medicine and how it will
work. Knowledge of chemistry plays a crucial role in predicting drug
interactions. Usually, multiple medications are given to a person as
part of treatment, but the chemistry helps predict if this could lead to
drug interactions. With the help of chemistry, many diseases or
conditions can be easily diagnosed. For example, blood glucose levels,
blood cholesterol levels can be diagnosed quickly using these
chemical tests.

The role of chemistry in research is not limited to the early stages of discovery. The
drug's clinical development was effective across the board. Each stage of clinical
development involves a large number of formulated drugs for studying potential
benefits in human trials. All drugs are manufactured under strict, government-
approved standards to ensure they meet the compliance requirements set by
regulatory bodies. Drug developers take advantage of the analytical testing and
process development that are necessary to meet regulatory requirements. It is
estimated that approximately half of the analytical chemistry services are
outsourced. A large number of support services for scientists are now being
provided by contract research organizations (CROs). These organizations, such as
Charles River Laboratory, Covance, Quintiles, PPD, Eurofins, SGS Life Sciences, and
Wuxi AppTech, are highly experienced in providing these services. The use of
analytical methods and equipment is common in preclinical testing, toxicity testing,
and in analyzing the effects of drugs in the body. The framework serves as the
backbone for drug discovery and growth in the pharmaceutical industry.

Detrimental Effects of Making Faulty Medicine

Drugs itself has alot of up and downsides but faulty drugs brings up numerous of problems including worsening
of sickness, infectious diseases or even death. Faulty drugs can go in different kinds of types and brands of
drugs like antibiotics, corticosteroids, drugs for erectile dysfunction, cancer drugs and antiretrovirals for
HIV/AIDS. Fake pharmaceuticals are created and marketed to resemble real brand-name prescriptions, but
they frequently include few or no of the active chemicals mentioned on the label. Patients who are unaware of
the unlawful supply chain run a major risk from fake medications. These counterfeit medications occasionally
lack the necessary therapeutic value since they lack the necessary active components. The worst-case
scenario is that some contain harmful ingredients. Some phony medications have been discovered to include
cement, rat poison, mercury, or arsenic, according to Interpol. Even if the dosage is substantially smaller than
what is shown on the product label, some fake medications nonetheless include legitimate antibiotics or
antivirals. It is insufficient to completely treat the illness, and it can allow germs to evolve and spread, adding to
the rising danger of antibiotic-resistant illnesses to the public's health.
Detrimental Effects of Making Faulty Medicine

In addition, fake pills may contain medications that are not meant to be there, which can cause overdoses and
fatalities. People should know the differences and effects of faulty drugs because alot of lives are being taken away
by using defective/faulty medicines and drugs. 84 Nigerian infants died from acute renal failure between November
2008 and February 2009, which was caused by the industrial solvent diethylene glycol in teething syrup (Akuse et
al., 2012; Polgreen, 2009). The contaminated product, My Pikin, was produced in Lagos, the country's manufacturing
center, and registered with the Nigerian regulatory agency (Akuse et al., 2012). Twelve charges resulted after
inspectors tracked the issue down to purposeful fraud committed by a chemical trader in Lagos (Poisoned teething
drug arrests, 2009; Polgreen, 2009). An inferior version of the diabetes medication glibenclamide (also known as
glyburide), which included six times the recommended dose of the pharmacopeial standard, was discovered in
2009, according to a southwest Chinese newspaper (Xiang, 2009). The medication was only evaluated after two
people died and nine people were injured (Cheng, 2009; Xiang, 2009).
Detrimental Effects of Making Faulty Medicine

Glibenclamide, along with oxytocin and ergometrine, is a WHO essential drug, and the only other oral diabetes
medication is metformin (WHO, 2011c). Concerns about metformin's quality have also been raised. Four of eight
well-known brands of metformin tablets were found to have failed one or more pharmacopeial tests for
bioequivalence in a convenience sample of pharmacies in Lagos, Nigeria, according to researchers (Olusola et al.,
2012) These findings are alarming given that an estimated 80 percent of the 347 million diabetics worldwide reside
in low- and middle-income nations, where the quality of medications is most inconsistent and the risk of death from
diabetes is too high (Unachukwu et al., 2008; WHO, 2011a). After her diabetic sister's death from fake insulin, Dora
Akunyili, the former director of the Nigerian drug regulatory body, dedicated herself to fighting pharmaceutical fraud
(Cheng, 2009; Lemonick, 2005).

THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF CHEMISTRY (RSC) HOPES TO RAISE PUBLIC AND POLITICAL
AWARENESS OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE, WHICH THEY CONSIDER
TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST THREATS TO MODERN MEDICINE. CHEMISTRY HAS LONG
BEEN CENTRAL TO THE STUDY OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES.CHEMISTS ARE ESPECIALLY
IMPORTANT IN THE CREATION OF ANTIBIOTICS FOR BACTERIAL INFECTIONS, WHICH
POSE CHALLENGES FOR HEALTHCARE NOT ONLY IN THE UK BUT AROUND THE
WORLD.ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS IN MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY HAS
BEEN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTIBIOTICS OVER THE PAST EIGHT DECADES.HOWEVER,
PATHOGENS ARE RETALIATING IN THE ONGOING BATTLE AGAINST BACTERIAL
INFECTIONS.REDNESS, SWELLING, PAIN, AND LOSS OF FUNCTION WERE THE FIVE MOST
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF INFLAMMATION.DURING INFLAMMATION, YOUR BODY'S WHITE
BLOOD CELLS RELEASE SUBSTANCES TO PROTECT IT FROM TOXINS.THERE IS AN
INCREASE IN BLOOD FLOW TO THE AREA OF THE INJURY OR ILLNESS.IT COULD CAUSE
REDNESS AND WARMTH.BY ALLOWING FLUID TO ENTER YOUR TISSUES, SOME OF THE
CHEMICALS CAUSE SWELLING.SOME INFECTIONS ARE BROUGHT ON BY BACTERIA LIKE
MYCOBACTERIA AND MYCOPLASMAS. INFECTIONS CAN ALSO BE BROUGHT ON BY
VIRUSES, FUNGI, OR PARASITES.

Benefit of determining the causes of
infections and inflammation
IT IS CRUCIAL TO MAKE AN EARLY AND CORRECT DIAGNOSIS OF
INFECTIOUS DISEASES BECAUSE IDENTIFICATION CAN INCREASE THE
EFFICACY OF THERAPIES AND PREVENT LONG-TERM PROBLEMS FOR
THE INFECTED PATIENT. IF YOU HAVE A TYPE OF INFECTION THAT IS IN
YOUR BLOODSTREAM AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO IMPACT YOUR
ENTIRE BODY, A BLOOD CULTURE TEST CAN HELP DETERMINE IT. THIS
INFECTION IS REFERRED TO THE DOCTORS AS SYSTEMIC. THE TEST
LOOKS FOR BACTERIA OR YEAST THAT COULD BE THE SOURCE OF THE
INFECTION IN A SAMPLE OF YOUR BLOOD. HOW CAN WE DIFFERENTIATE
BETWEEN INFLAMMATION AND INFECTION? AN INFECTION IS THE ENTRY
OF A FOREIGN SUBSTANCE INTO THE BODY THAT DAMAGES TISSUES.
ALTHOUGH INFLAMMATION IS A BODILY REACTION, IT SERVES AS A
QUICK RESPONSE TO AN INJURY BY REPAIRING AND REGENERATING
THE LIVING TISSUE.

Scientists are responsible for developing, testing, and testing new drugs. Once
this is done by scientists, dentists will be able to prescribe drugs based on their
effectiveness. Advances and improvements in oral health mean that dental care is
better delivered to all patients. That is why it is important to study chemistry and
know its contents in order to create new drugs.
