Stress is not just a problem that adults have to face. Young people also frequently experience unhealthy
levels of stress. Schooling is the top source which causes stress to teenagers.
According to data collected by the American Psychological Association for the Stress in America Survey,
teen stress is the same as, or even worse than that of adults. The results of the survey have shown that
Page 6
Plus Education- NO PAIN NO GAIN – Grade 09 UNIT 3 TEENS AND STRESS
teenagers can identify that their stress levels are not healthy, and they realize that stress has negative impacts
on their mental and physical health.
Some teenagers can struggle against significant stress levels that interfere with learning, relationships, and
other aspects in daily life; while others cannot get over the stress and have to get mental treatment. Therefore,
it is important to know the negative effects that stress has on teenagers:
- Emotional changes: Teenagers tend to be easy to get anxious, worried, angry, and depresseD. Parents
should pay attention to their children’s changes in showing feelings.
- Physical changes: Teenagers who are under stress are likely to get sick more often and they often have
complaints of headaches, stomachaches, other aches and pain.
- Behavioural changes: Teenagers may break their eating or sleeping habits. They seem to either eat
enormously or quit meals. They suffer serious insomnia, which is a severe condition of being unable to
sleep. They also show avoidance of normal daily activities.

Practical stress management can help students deal with their worries and become more productive,
C1
competent and efficient. First of all, students must be able to design and stick to a timetable. Choose a relaxing
break between work and study, even if it’s just taking out time to breathe. In addition, a healthy lifestyle is
essential for students. Let’s drink more water as well as take out time to get some air and exercise. Furthermore,
organization is very important in academic life for dealing with stress. By keeping academic notes organized,
turning in assignments on time, and keeping track of all deadlines, stress can be reduced to a great extent. Stress
can also get worse if a person feels lonely. Therefore, by letting out all your thoughts to someone you trust, you
immediately feel a lot better. However, if you feel extremely stressed out, take a break and do something you
c6 love. Whether it is painting or listening to music, doing something you enjoy can cheer up your mood and
distract you from a stressor. It’s about time that we students accept that we can achieve just as much in life
without all the stress.
