WEEK 3- (September 7-12)

I. LEARNING TARGET:
Understand the Different Management Theories and identify the functions, roles and skills of a
manager

II. CONTENT:
Theories of Management
Three main groups of management theories
 Classical Management – 1900-1930. Rational perspective that assumes there is one best
way to do things. Its goal is maximizing productivity and efficiency. This approach
emphasizes the completion of tasks through detailed and step by step procedures. Its
proponents were:
o Frederick Taylor- Scientific Management
o Henri Fayol- Administrative Principle
o Max weber- Bureaucratic Organization
 Behavioral Management Theories- 1930-1050. Ushered in the human relations view to
management. These theories aim to satisfy human relations and personal fulfillment to
motivate employees to their best performance. Its proponents were:
o Elton Mayo- Behavioral Management
o Chester Barnard- Cooperative Systems
o Douglas McGregor- Theory X and Theory Y
o Abraham Maslow- Hierarchy of Needs
 Modern Management- 1950-1980 involves several views and techniques. Its proponents
were:
o Edward Demings & Joseph Duran- Quality Management
o Peter Drucker- Modern Management
o Peter Senge- Learning Organization
o Jeffrey Pfeffer-Evidence-based Management
o Michael Porter-Competitive Strategy
Functions, Roles, and skills of a Manager
Manager is the one who is mainly responsible and accountable for accomplishing the specific
goal or objectives of a particular group or several groups.

Functions of a Manager- Managerial functions pertain to the specific tasks, responsibilities assigned to
managers. It varies depending on the level of managerial position which are:
 First-level supervisors- managers that manage the work of members who are directly
involved in the production of products and delivery of services of the organization
 Middle managers- manage the work of supervisors or other members of the
organization. They are the department heads or division heads, depending on the size
and nature of the organization.
 Top managers- manage the middle managers. They have larger responsibilities and
accountabilities. Top managers are positioned as the organization’s president, vice
president or board of directors

Roles of a Manager
Interpersonal Roles- Figurehead, Leader, liaison
Informational Role- Monitor, disseminator, spokesperson
Decisional Roles- Entrepreneur, Disturbance Handler, resource allocator, negotiator

Skills of Manager
Skill is the ability to perform a specific task to achieve the desired results. 3 sets of skills of
manager are:
 Technical Skills- pertains to abilities or expertise to do job required.
 Human Skills interpersonal skills or ability to work well with other people.
 Conceptual Skills- pertains to the ability to think critically and analytically.

III. LEARNING ACIVITIES: Answer the following questions in a separate sheet of short bond paper.

1. What are the main ideas contributed by each of the principles and proponents of Classical
Management theories?
2. What are the main ideas of the different Behavioral Management Theories?
3. What are the main ideas of the different Modern Management Theories?
4. Explain the different roles of a manager by citing a real life situation of each role.

IV. ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS: answer the following questions in another sheet of short bond paper.

1. What is a manager?
2. Why managers need to have skills in doing their different roles?
3. In your own view, who is more effective, a manager which is intelligent with no skills or a manager
with skills but don’t have knowledge? Defend your choice.
